The pressure was on as 11 grad-uate students took to the stage inthe Dupuis Hall Auditorium tocompete in the final round of theQueen’s Three-Minute Thesis(3MT) competition on Thursday,March 30.

Using only one static slide andno props, the students had topresent their research to a panel ofnon-specialist judges.

“Queen’s 3MT is a much-antici-pated annual event on campus,”says Brenda Brouwer, Vice-Provost and Dean of GraduateStudies. “Our students put inhours of preparation for theirthree minutes in front of thejudges. The competition helps stu-dents hone communication skills –such as making their research ac-cessible and it’s a great way to cel-ebrate the innovative andthought-provoking research ourgraduate students are conductingacross campus.”

Victoria Donovan, a master’scandidate in neuroscience wasnamed winner and people’s choicefor her presentation, Lie low, stayalive. Her research is looking atthe evolutionary response to trau-matic brain injury. Early resultsprovide evidence that high brainshutdown is an evolved reply totrauma – providing clues as to fu-ture treatments.

“I've been at Queen’s for sixand a half years now and have en-joyed every minute of it,” shesays. “I’m thrilled to have the

chance to represent the universityat the provincial championship.”

A panel of judges, consisting ofPrincipal Daniel Woolf, Chancel-lor Jim Leech, communicationsconsultant Robert A Wood, CBCreporter JC Kenny, and DeniseCumming, CEO of the UniversityHospitals Kingston Foundation,graded the competitors on clarity,audience engagement and presen-tation skills. A long-time sup-porter of the 3MT competition,CKWS Television host Bill Wely-chka served as the emcee for theevent.

“I have promoted the event on

CKWS-TV the past two years andit seems like the coolest thingever,” says Mr. Welychka. “I lovethat 3MT combines distilling acomplicated subject down to athree minute verbal presentationwith dramatic elements, publicspeaking and engaging the audi-ence. Not an easy undertaking tosay the least.”

Ms. Donovan will move on torepresent Queen’s at the Ontario3MT finals on April 12 in Waterloo.The national 3MT winner will bedecided through an online vote onvideos of the regional champions,conducted on the Canadian Associ-

ation of Graduate Studies website. “Competing in the 3MT was

one of the highlights of my Mas-ters studies,” says AnastasiaSavrova (MSc’17), winner of the2016 Queen’s 3MT competition. “Itwas encouraging to hear peoplewere so excited about my re-search, and this experience has re-ally pushed me to pursue moreopportunities where I can get thepublic more involved in academicresearch.”

Reinvesting in Queen’s futureBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

The preliminary 2017-18 operat-ing budget includes increasedspending in several priority areas,while maintaining the university’scommitment to prudent fiscalmanagement.

“Over the past several years, fi-nancial challenges have forcedfaculties and shared services tomake tough decisions,” saysQueen’s Principal Daniel Woolf.“We are now in a position to makereinvestments that will enhanceour student learning environmentand bolster our research activities.The budget will support facultyrenewal, which is a high priorityfor the university.”

Queen’s plans to hire 41tenured stream positions in 2017-18, as a first step towards a five-year plan that could see 200 newhires over that period, including

up to 20 Queen’s National Schol-ars positions. This is almost dou-ble the hiring pace of the past sixyears.

“The preliminary 2017-18 oper-ating budget consolidates our fi-nancial sustainability and allowsfor critical reinvestments in ouracademic mission,” says ProvostBenoit-Antoine Bacon, who pro-vided Senate with an overview ofthe preliminary budget at itsmeeting on March 20. He willpresent the budget for approval atthe May 12 meeting of the Boardof Trustees.

The university is in a positionto reinvest in shared services. Thepreliminary operating budget in-cludes strategic allocations for thehiring of faculty-based researchfacilitators, the staffing of the sex-ual violence prevention and stu-dent conduct office, and bolster-ing the international initiatives to

support international enrolmentgrowth and encourage greater student mobility.

New allocations are also beingmade to support technology trans-fers and industry partnerships, ITupgrades, classroom renewal, aswell as diversity and equity initia-tives.

“Our work around racism, di-versity, and inclusion – as well asour response to the Truth and Rec-onciliation Commission – will re-sult in lasting change on our cam-pus,” Principal Woolf says. “Thepreliminary budget sets asidefunds for recommendations thatmay require immediate invest-ments.”

Despite the positive outlook ofthe preliminary budget, Queen’scontinues to face risks to its finan-cial sustainability, most notablydeferred maintenance and thepension deficit.

-A recent audit showed the uni-

versity faces $268 million in totaldeferred maintenance, roughly a 6per cent increase compared to the$253 million reported in 2015-16.The university is increasing in-vestments to address this issue.

Work continues on a multi-em-ployer Jointly Sponsored PensionPlan for Ontario universities. Theoutcome of that process will im-pact the payments Queen’s has tomake toward its pension solvencydeficit.

“The preliminary 2017-18budget sets Queen’s on a path tobe a leading university over thelong term. These important rein-vestments will ensure we can con-tinue to attract the best andbrightest students and facultymembers who will tackle globalsocial problems and advanceknowledge in emerging fields ofresearch,” says Principal Woolf.

‘Diverse, interdisciplinary, highly successful’From March 1, 2017, John Fisher

is serving as interim vice-principal(research) at Queen’s University. Aprofessor and researcher in the De-partment of Biomedical and Molecu-lar Sciences, with a cross-appoint-ment to the Department of Medicine(Respirology), Dr. Fisher most re-cently held the position of associatevice-principal (research), as well asdirector of research in the Faculty ofHealth Sciences.

Dr. Fisher sat down with theGazette to discuss the priorities andgoals for the Office of the Vice-Princi-pal (Research) over the short term andfurther into the future.

GAZETTE: You have extensiveexperience both as a researcher inthe health sciences and in admin-istrative roles, including most re-cently as associate vice-principal(Research). Through this, whathave you learned about researchat Queen’s?

JOHN FISHER: What res-onates with me is that our re-search is diverse, interdisciplinaryand highly successful. These threeaspects characterize the founda-tion of research at Queen’s, andthey are the basis for our mem-bership in the U15 group of Cana-dian research-intensive universi-ties. Queen’s occupies a researchleadership role as a U15 member,and the key objective now is toensure that we continue to en-hance our position in researchboth nationally and internation-ally.

Research is also the founda-tion of a transformative educa-tional experience. Whether it’sfundamental research or applied,whether it’s particle astrophysicsor whether it’s knowledge trans-lation in a rehabilitation thera-pist’s teaching clinic, researchprovides a great educational ex-perience. We pride ourselves atQueen’s on this experience, andit’s something that attracts stu-dents here.

So for me, it all comes back tothis diverse, interdisciplinary, suc-cessful base of research thatdrives our educational experi-ence.

QG: As interim vice-principal(Research), what are your priori-ties and how can you contribute tothe research enterprise during thistime?

JF: The budget process has de-livered relative financial stabilityto most sectors of the institution.Deans are looking at faculty re-newal, and this is a critical oppor-tunity to enhance our researchprominence. This is also an oppor-tunity to enhance transformativeareas of research that bridge thegap between one faculty and an-other. There are also great projectsunderway that embrace knowl-edge translation and knowledgemobilization across the universityand with external partners.

The launch of the CanadianParticle Astrophysics ResearchCentre (CPARC), led by ProfessorTony Noble, is an institutionalpriority that is one of the founda-tions of our research strategy.CPARC is an exciting opportunityfor Queen’s to further demon-

strate research excellence in thisfield. The centre will bring severalnew hires to Queen’s, and thesearches are underway. Physics isan important focus in the comingmonths.

The other area that has reallystruck me over the last three yearsin the research portfolio is the im-portance of industry partnershipsand technology transfer. This is avast area that appears to grow inimportance daily. It all starts withresearchers mobilizing their dis-coveries to the next step, whateverthat may be. It also includes re-searchers working directly withindustry to come up with creativesolutions to problems. This is avery important area to both theuniversity and the government asit influences regional, provincialand national economic develop-ment. So this is an area that is achallenge, but one that is very en-joyable. Kingston appears to be onthe brink of growth with respectto industry partnerships and techtransfer.

QG: What challenges are aheadfor you and the research portfolio?

JF: Funding is clearly one, andwe need to think creatively aboutsolutions that work with govern-ment and industry partners. Thedeans are launching some very in-teresting programs, and you cansee how each of them is thinkingabout how to catalyze research intheir faculties. They are beingvery strategic in how they do that,ensuring their programs have thebest potential to secure Tri-Coun-

cil funding or to develop industrypartnerships and innovation.

Another challenge will be howwe approach research digital in-frastructure. Whether it’s the so-cial sciences, education, engineer-ing, arts and science, or medicine,all are influenced enormously bycomputing and the ability to pur-sue sophisticated analytics. Tradi-tionally, universities have thoughtabout digital infrastructure as avehicle to deliver education.However, the research landscapehas continued to grow and re-quires additional capacity and so-phistication with respect to re-search infrastructure. An exampleincludes the role of our Vice-Provost and University Librarian,Martha Whitehead, who is aleader in Canada with respect todata management and how we de-velop data management plans.There is a renewed Centre for Ad-vanced Computing, led by DonAldridge, which is building digi-tal research infrastructure for fac-ulty research.

QG: In 2016, Queen’s con-ducted an external review of re-search and related innovation pro-grams, platforms and structures atthe university. What do you see asthe key recommendations thatcame out of the process?

JF: The response to the re-search review has many movingparts. There were 13 recommenda-tions that came out of that review,and there has been action on anumber of them. A key recom-mendation is faculty renewal,

which will drive our research per-formance.

An integral part of the renewalwill be to embrace equity, diver-sity and inclusion in the pursuitof new faculty members and theirresearch expertise. The Principal’sImplementation Committee onRacism, Diversity, and Inclusion(PICRDI) has held a series oftown halls that clearly highlightthe benefits. This is also truewithin the broader researchsphere, where equity, diversityand inclusion provide additionalinput and perspectives for suc-cess. The federal government isdirecting institutions to thinkproactively about how we can en-hance diversity and inclusionwithin the Canada Excellence Re-search Chairs (CERC) or CanadaResearch Chairs (CRC) programs.Ultimately this will influence howthe research portfolio looks at ourCRCs and our CERCs and thiswork parallels the great work thatthe PICRDI is doing.

In response to the external re-view, we’re soon going to launchthe renewal of the Strategic Re-search Plan (SRP) and I would en-courage the engagement of fac-ulty, students and staff to help usrevise the SRP because this is go-ing to drive where we go in the fu-ture.

Strategic ResearchPlan Renewal

The Queen’s Strategic Re-search Plan is a foundational gov-erning document that supportsand guides the institutional re-search mission. Over the past fiveyears it has supported the re-search landscape at Queen’s in avariety of ways – allowing us toenhance our research promi-nence through targeted areas offocus, successes in external fund-ing, development of internalfunding programs, engagementof trainees, and innovation andpartnership activities.

The current iteration of theSRP will conclude at the end of2017. Over the next severalmonths, it will be reviewed andrefreshed. Details about the in-tended overarching design of therenewed SRP; our commitment tequity, diversity, and inclusion;and the general schedule forcommunity engagement anddocument revision can be foundon the Office of the Vice-Principal(Research) website(queensu.ca/vpr/), along with up-dates on timelines and process.

A draft SRP will be presentedto Senate for review and feed-back.

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION TASK FORCE

At a special reception Tuesday,March 21 to mark the unveiling ofthe Queen’s Truth and Reconcilia-tion (TRC) Task Force final reportand recommendations, PrincipalDaniel Woolf told the crowd ofstudents, staff, faculty, alumni,and local Indigenous communitymembers that, “Today, our com-munities come together to changecourse.”

“By taking steps to ensure thatIndigenous histories are shared,by recognizing that we can allbenefit from Indigenous knowl-edge, and by creating culturallyvalidating learning environments,we can begin to reduce barriers toeducation and create a more wel-coming, inclusive, and diverseuniversity,” said Principal Woolf.

The special event, held at theAgnes Etherington Art Centre, andthe TRC report represent a signifi-cant milestone for Queen’s and thelocal Indigenous communities, sig-nalling a broad and sustained ef-fort to build and improve rela-tions, and to effect meaningfulinstitutional change. The recom-mendations in the report spaneverything from hiring practicesand programming, to research,

community outreach, and the cre-ation of Indigenous cultural spaceson campus. (More detailed list ofrecommendations on page 5.)

Principal Woolf reiterated hiscommitment to fulfilling the rec-ommendations in the task force’sfinal report, and to illustrate thatcommitment, he announced thatthe university will be creating anOffice of Indigenous Initiatives inthe coming months – an an-nouncement met by a loud roundof applause from the audience.

“This is just one of the taskforce’s many recommendationsthat I am committed to imple-menting across campus, and be-cause I believe that we arestronger together, I welcome therest of the Queen’s community tojoin me in that commitment,” hesaid.

Principal Woolf also stated hiscommitment to the TRC recom-mendations in a special Senatemeeting on March 7, where he ac-knowledged “Queen’s own his-tory as an institution that partici-pated in a colonial tradition thatcaused great harm to IndigenousPeople.”

‘We are making history’

Bringing together Indigenousand non-Indigenous community

members, Tuesday’s event washosted by TRC Task Force co-chairs Mark Green and Jill Scottand showcased the importance ofceremony – with a traditional Mo-hawk opening presented by lec-turer Nathan Brinklow, presenta-tions by Elder Marlene BrantCastellano and student LaurenWinkler, an Anishinaabe HonourSong performed by the Four Di-rections Women Singers, and toend the evening, a Hau-denosaunee Round Dance, led byperformers from Tyendinaga Mo-hawk Territory, that broughtguests together in a huge circle,hands linked.

“Ceremony reminds us thatwhat we do today is important,impacting the relationships andresponsibilities that we carry for-

ward, and woven into our mem-ory as a community,” said Dr.Brant Castellano, a member of thetask force, Queen’s alumna, andpioneer and champion of Indige-nous rights and education.

“We are making history,” Dr.Brant continued. “In creating thetask force, Queen’s has stepped upto ask of itself: What can we do toadvance reconciliation? … Thetask force has brought togethervoices from the Queen’s commu-nity saying: We can do this. Wehave a responsibility to do this.The report is presented to theprincipal, who speaks on behalf ofthe university. In this ceremony,all who are present become wit-nesses to Queen’s acknowledge-ment of past errors and commit-ment to walk together withIndigenous Peoples and others ofgood mind to restore and main-tain a relationship of peace,friendship, and respect.”

Lauren Winkler, student andpresident of the Queen’s NativeStudent Association, as well asdeputy commissioner of Indige-nous affairs for the Alma MaterSociety and member of the TRCTask Force, spoke about the expe-riences of Indigenous studentsand the challenges and racist en-counters they face on Queen’s

campus.“Our education system has

failed and is failing to educate ourstudents at the cost of Indigenousstudents. The university recognizesthis – it’s one of the truths in ourtruth and reconciliation process,”says Ms. Winkler, who went on tothank Principal Woolf for his ac-knowledgements of the history ofmistreatment of the Indigenouscommunity and Queen’s role inperpetuating the mistreatment.

“I would like to thank you allhere today because by being here,you are showing me that you ac-knowledge the truths of our past,that you stand in support of theserecommendations, and that youwill make a commitment to seeingthe recommendations through,”says Ms. Winkler.

The TRC Task Force’s final re-port, which includes reproduc-tions of artwork included in theIndigenous art collection at theAgnes, outlines recommendationsand timelines for implementation– in particular, the formation of animplementation team that willwork with faculties, schools, andshared service units to expediterecommendations. The task forceasks for five-year plans from thefaculties, schools, and other unitsto be completed by fall 2017.

“I would like to thank you all heretoday because by being here, youare showing me that youacknowledge the truths of ourpast, that you stand in support ofthese recommendations, and thatyou will make a commitment toseeing the recommendationsthrough.”

Queen’s Truth andReconciliation Task Force

The Queen’s task force formedin April 2016 to begin the work ofresponding to the Truth and Rec-onciliation Commission ofCanada’s final report on the his-tory and legacy of Canada’s resi-dential school system for Aborigi-nal children.

Composed of Indigenous andnon-Indigenous faculty, staff, stu-dents, senior administrators, andcommunity members, the taskforce considered how to meaning-fully respond to the TRC’s calls toaction.

In addition, the task force ex-plored how the university canplay an active role in addressingthe broader themes of the TRC re-port, including relationship-building, changing perspectives andpolicy, and promoting an aware-ness of the rights, histories, andcontemporary issues of Indige-nous Peoples.

The final report is titled inthree languages: Yakwanastahen-téha (Mohawk); Aankenjigemi(Ojibway); Extending the Rafters(English).

Queen’s TRC recommendationsIn the final report, and in addition

to the creation of the Office of In-digenous Initiatives, the task forcecalls for, among other things:

• Continued efforts to developand strengthen relationships withIndigenous communities in theKingston region.

• Proactive efforts to ensure thatselection and nomination processesof candidates for senior administra-tion positions and governance bod-ies do not unintentionally limit In-digenous candidates fromconsideration.

• The expansion of advancementstrategies to increase philanthropicfunding for Indigenous initiatives, aswell as the development of partner-ships to proactively advocate andengage with government for sys-tem-wide programs and policies thatsupport Indigenous students.

• The creation of culturally validat-ing spaces by incorporating Indige-nous art and languages into publicspaces and signage, planting tradi-tional Indigenous plants to honourthe traditional territory of the Hau-denosaunee and Anishinaabe Peo-ples, and the creation of Indigenousspaces for ceremonies and events.

• The creation of new bridgingand pathway programs to increaseaccess to post-secondary educationfor Indigenous youth, as well as ex-panded recruitment and outreachinitiatives into Indigenous communi-ties. Faculties are to ensure an Abo-riginal admission policy is developed

to improve access in all undergradu-ate, graduate, and professional pro-grams.

• More work to increase the num-ber of Indigenous staff and faculty,as well as to explore ways in whichto recognize traditional knowledgeas a valid means of scholarlyachievement in hiring practices.

• Raising awareness of Indige-nous-focused research occurring oncampus and ensuring the necessarysupports are in place to allow re-search in these fields to flourish.

• Every program offered atQueen’s to include significant andmeaningful Indigenous content, sothat graduating students gain a ba-sic understanding of Indigenousknowledge systems relevant to theirdiscipline.

• All students to receive appropri-ate cultural awareness training tounderstand the complex historiesand modern realities faced by In-digenous Peoples. Additional train-ing and resources for faculty mem-bers are required to ensureinstructors are comfortable promot-ing dialogue between Indigenousand non-Indigenous students on In-digenous issues.

• The incorporation of Indigenousceremonies and practices into uni-versity events will also serve to fos-ter a sense of inclusion for Indige-nous students and increaseawareness of Indigenous practicesamong non-Indigenous students,staff, and faculty.

Law student encourages deeperunderstanding of treaty historiesBY MARK KERR, SENIORCOMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

On March 21, the Queen’s Truthand Reconciliation Commission TaskForce presented its final report withrecommendations to the universitycommunity. The historical milestonewas marked with an event that day atthe Agnes Etherington Art Centre.The Gazette is featuring profiles of In-digenous members of the TRC TaskForce. Today, the focus is on JasonMercredi (Law’18), a member ofQueen’s Senate and the Aboriginalrepresentative on the Queen’s LawStudents’ Society.

Prospective students will oftenask what a university or collegewill offer them. Jason Mercrediflipped that question when he wasconsidering his post-secondaryoptions a few years ago.

“I understood that Queen’swasn’t well known for its Aborigi-nal content, but that the lawschool wanted to improve its Abo-riginal profile,” says Mr. Mercredi(Law’18). “With my experienceworking with Aboriginal commu-nities to develop programs, I felt Icould offer something to Queen’sin the same way the university isoffering me a degree.”

Mr. Mercredi, a MushkegowukCree, was born in Winnipeg. Be-fore applying to Queen’s, heworked with several organiza-tions dedicated to advancing Abo-riginal rights, including Treaty 1-11. As part of his involvement withthat organization, Mr. Mercredideveloped a deep understandingof the treaty histories, which influ-enced his decision to study law.

“Understanding the history of

the treaties is really missing fromthe education system, and even inlaw school, we don’t really learnabout the treaties,” he says. “Peo-ple don’t have a full understand-ing of the nation-to-nation rela-tionship. My goal is toreinvigorate those treaties, and be-ing at a law school, I know whatchanges I want to make to havethose rights recognized.”

Soon after arriving at the uni-versity, Mr. Mercredi began work-ing to make Queen’s law studentsmore aware of Aboriginal treatyand inherent rights. He estab-lished the Aboriginal Law Stu-dents’ Alliance, a group designedto help all Queen’s law studentsappreciate and participate in Abo-riginal legal matters with greaterunderstanding.

In 2016, he and fellow law stu-dents changed the Law Students’Society’s constitution to include alongstanding Indigenous studentrepresentative position. Due to thesmall body of Indigenous studentsat Queen’s Law, he was subse-quently elected to serve as the In-digenous student representative.That same year, Mr. Mercredi waselected as the law students’ repre-sentative on Queen’s Senate.

Offering wide knowledgeto TRC Task Force

When the Queen’s TRC TaskForce was announced in early2016, Mr. Mercredi felt compelledto serve given his knowledge oftreaties and his work experience.As an Aboriginal student liaisonwith Mothercraft College inToronto, he worked to ensure thesuccess of Indigenous students en-

rolled in the early childhood edu-cation program, and he also gaveguest presentations on Indigenoushistory. While with Native Childand Family Services of Toronto, heassessed the social needs of the ur-ban Indigenous population andhelped create programs to addressthose needs.

“For a period of time, it wasquite depressing, because I had tolook at what was wrong, andthere is so much wrong,” he says.“But that’s what elevated me tocome here. That background, un-derstanding, and knowledge iswhat I wanted to bring to the TRCTask Force.”

Mr. Mercredi says he enjoyedserving on the task force. Hefound the experience rewarding,with respectful dialogue aroundthe table.

“There was a lot of genuine in-terest in creating equity, which is ahealthier approach than creatingequality, because with equalityyou are just absorbed into every-thing else,” he says. “You don’thave your real identity.”

As Queen’s now moves to im-plement the task force’s recommen-dations, Mr. Mercredi is lookingforward to Indigenous identitiesgrowing and flourishing across theuniversity in the coming years.

“I would hope that IndigenousPeoples – First Nations, Métis, andInuit – can just come to Queen’sand be themselves,” he says. “Iwould hope they are able to cometo Queen’s and have their ownidentity without having to pro-mote it or explain it constantly. Iwould like to see it as a wholesomepart of the entire school culture.”

An alternative, industry-linked model for PhD trainingBY DANIEL WOOLF, PRINCIPALAND VICE-CHANCELLOR

We’ve heard a great deal in re-cent years about a “skills gap” be-ing experienced by business andindustry and the need for moreapprentices, pipe-fitters and so on.Much of this concern is economic-cycle dependent and the down-turn in energyprices has qui-eted this dis-cussion. Whatis less at issue isthe need formore “work-in-tegrated learn-ing,” a broadcategory thatcan include everything from for-mal co-op programs to one-yearinternships, to more course-basedexperiential education. Universi-ties such as Queen’s have investedheavily in recent years in creatingprograms and opportunities forour students to learn the lessons(some of them hard) of entrepre-neurship and innovation. This willbe a good thing, as long as there issufficient supply of graduates alsoprepared to go into business, in-dustry and the non-profit or pub-lic sectors – not everyone can orshould be an independent entre-preneur.

But what about the needs of

business and industry at the moreadvanced level? At a recent meet-ing of the U15 group of universi-ties, a number of STEM industryleaders noted that there appearedto be a downturn in the produc-tion of PhDs generally and ofPhDs in STEM disciplines in par-ticular. However, the most recentnumbers coming from StatisticsCanada show that the number ofPhD degrees awarded grewsteadily between 2006 and 2013.That said, Canada falls below theOECD average with respect to thenumber of PhDs held – surely aproblem if we are to be competi-tive in the global knowledge econ-omy – and perhaps the reason be-hind the sense of a “downturn.”

Canada’s low number of PhDholders could be ascribed to acombination of factors including:

1. the reduction in real terms offunding for investigator drivenbasic science research over thepast decade;

2. the sluggish academic jobmarket, which, given constraintson provincial budgets (the pri-mary funder of university operat-ing expenses in Canada) and theabsence of mandatory retirement,is not likely to change in themedium term;

3. Canada’s poor performancein supporting business and organ-izations to embrace innovation as

a strategy for growth. The cumu-lative effects lead quite simply to adrying up of the pipeline thatleads from education to economicgrowth and global competitive-ness.

University and business lead-ers agree that this is a problem,and it’s accentuated by the failureof many of us in academe to con-nect more closely with industry –not, I emphasize, to allow a pri-vate sector agenda to dominate re-search, but rather to make surethat prospective candidates forPhD are aware of opportunitiesoutside the academy both beforeand as they progress to degreecompletion. It should be notedthat academic/industry programssuch as those offered by Mitacshave proven to be quite success-ful, but I wonder what more wecould be doing to foster skills andcareer development through di-rect partnerships with industry.These would not be limited toSTEM – banks and other busi-nesses have needs for the criticalskills that can be provided byPhDs in English or Political Stud-ies – but I’ll confine myself toSTEM here with a modest sugges-tion for a solution.

Universities and businessescould take a page from the play-book of Canada’s Armed Forces,who have been producing their of-

ficers for decades through a com-bination of teaching them them-selves (for instance at Royal Mili-tary College in Kingston) orsubsidizing their education atother institutions. In return, theyget an agreed-upon promise ofyears of service post-degree.

What if we extended thatmodel to the doctoral level? Busi-nesses and industries could eitherindividually, or as a pool, providefour years of doctoral funding forqualified candidates to do a PhDat a research-intensive university,in return for, say, four years of em-ployment at the firm afterward.This would solve a variety ofproblems at once. It would pro-vide a badly needed alternativestream of funding for studentsthus enabling faculty to take ondoctoral-level researchers in theirlabs. It would remove the problemof “what do I do when I’m fin-ished”? It would ensure a steadysupply of STEM PhDs in neededareas. It would seed businesseswith managers who understandthe importance of university-based research and what it can dofor Canada’s economy. And itwould help mitigate the most un-helpful and unrealistic notion thatwe in the academy have, that ourPhDs must go into academe, mustget a postdoc, etc., or else theyhave failed us and we them.

This alternative model for PhDtraining would need to be de-signed carefully. At the outset itwould require that intellectualproperty considerations are ad-dressed and that there is a clearunderstanding that the research tobe undertaken is an academic re-quirement conducted under thementorship of the faculty supervi-sor. Ideally, there should be op-portunities for work-integratedlearning woven into the academicprogram. Many programs are in-troducing such opportunities, andwith businesses investing in sup-porting students they may behighly motivated to provide train-ing that will complement the aca-demic learning and better preparePhDs to join the employer upondegree completion.

The current model of relationsbetween business and the univer-sity, built mainly on patents andlicenses, has served us all well fordecades. But the world haschanged, and we need as a coun-try to raise our game and examineother models of integration. If wedo not, we run the risk of losingthe next generation of researchleaders. Not just business, not justthe university, but Canada as awhole will be the poorer for it.

Never say never; is it too late to… try to change?The following column was ini-

tially written as a blog by Peer Learn-ing Assistant Joyce Leung, a fourth-year ConEd/Psychology student, andpublished on the Learning Strategieswebsite (sass.queensu.ca/learn-ingstrategies/).

Whether it’s changing yourhabits, mindset, attitude, or rela-tionship – it’s not always going tobe an easy step over. One thing isfor sure though, you’re never tooold (or late) to change you or any-thing.

As a fourth-year undergradstudent looking back, I havechanged a lot in my abilities,skills, and mindset.

“Why?” When I entered uni-versity I decided that I wanted toimprove, change, and learn, whichis something I hope to always bedoing.

“How?” Namely through expe-rience, putting myself out there,and being okay with trying andfailing, but also with these ideasguiding my way.

1. You must recognize that itwon’t be a quick or effortlesschange… but that you still wantto try

Tell yourself it’s going to behard because it very likely will beand accept it because you’re put-ting yourself in a place where it’snot in your realm of the usual orfamiliar. That’s what you hope tobreak out of. Be ready for the chal-lenge and difficulties, rather thanthinking that it’ll be an easy, shortprocess.2. You’re your own biggest criticbut also… your biggest obstacleand supporter

Once you’re okay and see thatthis will be outside your comfortzone know that it’s you who cancome up with the excuses but alsothat you are the only one who canget this done. I learned that I trulyam the only one who can changeyourself. This is incredibly true if Ithink back to the times my momnagged me to change my habits tothe times when I personally putmy words (not hers) into action fi-

nally. I did that because I wantedto change myself for myself. Noone can make it happen, just you.3. Be real with yourself. Make aplan and revise it until it works

You know what you are likewhen you’re at your best and alsoat your lowest. Make a plan thatwill work with you and that willalso get the work done. Create re-alistic milestone goals that buildup to your ultimate end goal thatsuits your style, while it stillpushes you. Write down what itwill look and feel like if your planis working so you have cues tolook out for. Afterwards, writedown all the things stopping youor that have stopped. That mightbe the difficulty in finding time inyour busy schedule, which maybe the reason you’ll stop. Or thatyou remembered the last time youtried this you gave up part waybecause it just wasn’t working out.

Once you’ve listed the barriersand obstacles, dedicate realisticsolutions that will help you over-come them. That may be devoting

a page or a notebook to track yourprogress or designing a plan thatonly takes a few minutes a day tofix that time issue. Or writingdown what you would tell afriend if they wanted to give up orasking friends to help you withthis mission.

Don’t forget or lose sightthough. Be aware and attentive toyour plan. Celebrate the small vic-tories because that is progressadding up! Count the small steps– don’t expect Rome to be built ina day! What do the results looklike? If it isn’t working, what do Ineed to adjust? You will probablyadjust your plan and that’s almostexpected. You might need to takea break sometimes and that’s okay,but never stop trying because itwill work eventually if you do.4. Easily said, hardly done, butwho’s counting? Who’s celebrat-ing?

The answer’s YOU! In any case,remember you’re accountable andholding accountability is a greatway to get things done. In my ex-

perience, if I don’t write myprogress or experience down, Iwill forget about my plans tochange altogether. Find your wayof holding yourself accountable!

In addition, too often do welose track of our goals much likethose New Year’s resolutions youmight have forgotten already. Justas likely, you’ve probably guilttripped and cycled through thatwhen you missed a step in yourgrand scheme to eradicate orlessen a habit or trait of yours. I’vebeen there, and done that.

At the end of the day though, Irealized that I’m the one who canmake this change but guilt trip-ping won’t add to this develop-ment. Accepting the setbacks ishard, but recognize that you arenot your mistakes and disappoint-ments and that you are also yoursuccesses and important in thelives of your family and friends.What you can’t forget is that youcan get back up on your feet andcontinue trying. I know you can!And you know that too.

After being diagnosed withbreast cancer Sue Hendler tookher battle to the public.

The former associate professorin the School of Urban and Re-gional Planning and foundingDirector of the Institute ofWomen's Studies (now GenderStudies) wrote a regular columnin the Kingston Whig-Standardto document her journey andraise awareness of the deadlydisease until she died in 2009.The columns would later be pub-lished in the book Dying in Pub-lic, edited by her friend andQueen’s colleague ChristineOverall (Philosophy, GenderStudies).

However, with her energy fo-cused on her cancer fight, otherprojects were left unfinished.

Eight years later, one of thoseprojects has been completedthanks to the efforts of a former

graduate student.On March 15, Dr. Hendler’s

book “I Was the Only Woman”

Women and Planning in Canadawas launched with a specialevent at Robert Sutherland Hall

that brought together family,friends, colleagues and students.

The book shines a light on thefemale pioneers in Canadiancommunity planning and theircontributions. The final chaptersand editing was completed by Ju-lia Markovich, a former studentof Dr. Hendler’s.

Now a senior research associ-ate with the Conference Board ofCanada, Dr. Markovich says sheis excited by the prospects for thebook with current and future stu-dents.

“I think this book really hasthe potential to change the waypeople study and think aboutplanning in Canada, its history, itpresent and its future,” she says.“As someone who helped see thisthrough to completion I’m just sodelighted. This project was a longtime in coming and it just feelsfantastic to see it as a tangiblething. It’s a good moment.”

The end of term period formany people at Queen’s – faculty,staff, and especially students – is astressful time.

Papers are due and final ex-ams, both need to be marked, andafter that it’s time to move or takethat next life step beyond univer-sity.

It can be a lot to handle.Stress management is key and

fortunately there are many re-sources available at Queen’s tohelp you help yourself or provideextra support when needed. Thefirst step can be identifying thecauses of stress.

“For most students, during thistime of year, their goal is to man-age their stress levels so that theycan keep themselves on track toachieve their academic goals,”says Kate Humphrys, Health Pro-motion Coordinator at StudentWellness Services. “So one strat-egy is to identify what is causingthe greatest concern and then toseek out the appropriate solutionfor that particular issue.”

That could mean meeting witha Peer Learning Assistant or at-tending a workshop at StudentAcademic Success Services(SASS). It may be as simple as us-ing the Exam Study Schedulefrom Learning Strategies to helpget everything organized or ac-cessing some of the many onlineresources.

As Ms. Humphrys points out,just as with most things in life, itis important find some sort of bal-ance. But the pressures at thistime of year can make that moredifficult.

It all starts with taking care ofyourself.

“From a health perspectivewhen we look at self-care andstress management during examswe always come back to our keymessage: be proactive in your ef-forts to take care of yourself, andremember that effective self-careis individualized – what works forone person doesn’t always workfor another,” she explains. “Priori-tizing the time to take care ofyourself can really help managestress and can potentially lead tobetter academic results.”

This means eating well, gettingenough sleep, and taking breaks,both the short breaks – 10 minutesfor every hour of study – as welllonger breaks to connect withfamily or go out for a coffee withfriends to take your mind off theexam buzz. It also means takingtime for physical activity.

Mental health, physical healthand social health form a solidfoundation to help manage stressduring exam time, Ms. Humphryssays.

“Managing your stress will beeasier if you are eating well, sleep-ing well, getting some activity,and staying connected with others– it’s all connected,” she says “Itcan seem overwhelming, but oftentimes picking one thing that feelsmanageable is a good start. Thenit’s possible to slow add in otherchanges, and over time it does geteasier.”

For some people, however,self-care may not be enough andMs. Humphrys encourages stu-dents who are feeling very over-whelmed to seek out supportthrough resources such as Coun-selling Services at Student Well-ness Services, the Office of theUniversity Chaplain, the AMS

Peer Support Centre, the SGPSPeer Advisor Program, and Stu-dent Academic Success Services.Students can also access supportfrom Career Services, as well atthe Queen’s University Interna-tional Centre and Four DirectionsAboriginal Students Centre.

“There are so many peoplehere on campus who support stu-dents and every student has ac-cess these services,” Ms.Humphrys says. “Sometimes wehear from students that they areunsure. We always encourage stu-dents to remember that theseservices are here for them. Theywouldn’t be here if students didn’tuse them.”

New this year is #QueensProjec-tHappy, a positive mental healthcampaign inspired by Queen’salumnus Neil Pasricha and theideas he brings forward in his 2016book The Happiness Equation.

Throughout the exam period,Health Promotion will be offeringtips for social media followers toincrease happiness. The new IBM Canada | SmithCognitive Computing Centre, thefirst of its kind at a businessschool in Canada, is a collabora-tive space that will provide an ex-clusive artificial intelligencedemonstration experience for IBMclients and enhanced access tocognitive computing solutions forSmith students and faculty.

Running played a key role inKyla Tozer’s recovery from a braintumour. Now, things are comingfull circle for the Kingston native –she’s giving back to the hospitalthat helped save her life bylaunching an ambitious charityrun for Kingston General Hospi-tal’s neurosurgery unit.

Before her own surgery, Ms.Tozer describes her life choices asbeing “reckless.” After the surgerythat removed a softball-sized tu-mour from her brain, she contin-ued to inhabit a dark place, de-spite letting go of most of hercareless lifestyle. When a cousinsuggested running, she quickly re-alized its life-changing abilities.

“Every day, every week Iwould try to go just a little bit fur-ther,” she says. “I started to feellike I’m completely in control ofthis; for once in my life, I controlmy mind. I can go out and runand I can go any direction as fastas I want, as slow as I want, how-ever long I want – and nothingcan stop me. There’s nobodytelling me not to do it.”

Ms. Tozer ran on her own formonths before she decided to jointhe Running Room. There, shemet a Queen’s student doing herPhD in exercise physiology.

“I was able to totally open upto her about everything and shewould explain things to me,” Ms.Tozer says. “It was a big part ofmy rehabilitation.”

Ms. Tozer traces her symptomsback to when she was 16. She ex-perienced headaches on a dailybasis and it got to the point whereshe could barely tolerate fluores-

cent lighting.After years of chronic

headaches and trembling hands,Ms. Tozer got fed up and‘Googled’ her symptoms (whichshe doesn’t endorse), only to real-ize there was a single diagnosis:brain tumor. She instantly con-tacted her family physician, whobooked an MRI. Within 24 hours,she got a call from her doctor say-ing she had a brain tumor.

Ms. Tozer’s family physician re-ferred her to KGH’s neurosurgeryunit, where she met Dr. RonaldPokrupa and his team. Ms. Tozerdescribes the care she received atthe hospital as nothing short ofphenomenal. The team had a tonof patience with her, answeringevery little question and support-ing her in both the lead-up to thesurgery and the lengthy recovery.

“Where the tumour was lo-cated has a lot to do with intelli-gence, rational thinking and all ofthat,” she says. “I was never evergood in high school; my markswere horrible and I had a difficult

time staying on task.”In hindsight, she knows part of

the reason why.Ms. Tozer managed to turn her

life around; she has a job, a familyof her own and is a student atQueen’s. She’s taking health sci-ences courses, with hopes of mi-grating to neuroscience.

She is excited to give back tothe hospital that helped her bylaunching the Neuro HalfMarathon and 5 Kilometre Race.Kicking off May 7, all of the pro-ceeds will go directly to KGH andmore specifically, the neuro-surgery program.

Ms. Tozer hopes Queen’s stu-dents will join the run, addingthat many from the Faculty ofHealth Sciences are involved inthe hospital already through clini-cal placements and residencies.

Progress continues on pension projectBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

Work continues on the multi-university initiative to create amulti-employer, jointly-sponsoredpension plan for the universitysector in Ontario.

Currently, a group comprisingthree universities – Queen’s Uni-versity, University of Toronto, andUniversity of Guelph – has beenformed and is charged with final-izing the outstanding design andgovernance elements of the Uni-versity Pension Project (UPP).

Once finalized, all Ontario uni-versities will have the option toparticipate in the sector jointlysponsored pension plan. Partici-pation on the part of any univer-

sity would be voluntary andwould require the consent of planmembers.

At Queen’s, a joint workinggroup between the university andits employee groups continues tomeet, most recently on March 1,and work on the issues surround-ing the UPP. The joint workingcommittee was formed as a resultof a memorandum of agreementsigned by the parties during thelast round of collective bargainingin August 2015. It is co-chaired byAl Orth, special adviser forQueen’s for the UPP and the for-mer associate vice-principal (Hu-man Resources), and Paul Young,chair of the pension committee forthe Queen’s University Faculty

Association (QUFA), member ofthe OCUFA consultative group onthe UPP, and a professor in theDepartment of Biology.

Whether or not Queen’s even-tually decides to participate in theplan, some things remain con-stant. Individual pension benefitsthat have already been earned areguaranteed under law, so anyonemoving to a new jointly spon-sored pension plan, such as theUPP, will keep what they have al-ready earned. Pensions already inpayment are also guaranteednever to be reduced.

BACKGROUND

Queen’s currently has a pen-sion deficit of $285 million on a

solvency basis, a hypotheticalscenario that assumes Queen’scloses its doors and terminatesthe pension plan. In 2015 Queen’sreceived stage two solvency re-lief and opted to defer paymentson the solvency deficit for threeyears, but then would have topay down the entire balanceover the following seven.

During the three-year deferralperiod, the university will builda reserve fund to offset the im-pact of the solvency paymentsthat would begin in 2018 if theUniversity Pension Project is notsuccessful. In addition, the uni-versity is still required to makepayments on the plan’s $175-mil-lion deficit calculated on a going

concern basis (assumes the plancontinues to operate).

The UPP was originally led bythe Council of Ontario Universi-ties and the Ontario Confedera-tion of University Faculty Asso-ciations, with the activeparticipation of individual uni-versities and bargaining units.

The project has received fund-ing from the Government of On-tario.

Teams of graduate studentsparticipating in the Queen’s PhD-Community Initiative deliveredreports on the outcomes of theirprojects with local communitygroups during a special event onMarch 22. The reports mark theculmination of nearly five monthsof teamwork which gave the stu-dents an opportunity to apply theskills acquired in their graduatetraining to address real-worldproblems.

“The initiative offered ourgraduate students hands-on expe-rience in applying the skills ac-quired in their academic programsas well as the opportunity to ex-pand their network of colleaguesand community contacts,” saysBrenda Brouwer, Vice-Provost andDean of the School of GraduateStudies. “It’s incredibly gratifyingto see how they’ve leveraged theircomplementary strengths andworked so effectively as teams.Each team has accomplished a lotin a short time and their effortshave had meaningful impacts onthe partner organizations. It istruly a win-win situation.”

For the past five months, inter-disciplinary teams of Queen’s PhD

students have partnered with lo-cal community organizations toaddress specific issues or chal-lenges. By applying their knowl-edge and skills and offering afresh, analytical approach, the stu-dents have gained valuable expe-rience in solving problems as a

team and the partner benefitsfrom their creative solutions andinsights helping them to move for-ward. As an added benefit, thepartnerships offered a way tostrengthen ties between Queen’sand the community.

“Working with a non-profit or-

ganization encouraged me to reachoutside my comfort zone,” ex-plains Mavis Kusi, a second-yeardoctoral candidate in neuroscience.

Seventeen graduate studentsformed interdisciplinary teams ofthree to four students and werematched with five organizations

that had identified a particularchallenge or issue that could bene-fit from a fresh, outside perspec-tive. The organizations includedSustainable Energy in Remote Ar-eas (SERA), Queen’s University Bi-ological Station (QUBS) Commu-nity Outreach Expansion, SistemaKingston after-school program,Promoting Relationships andEliminating Violence Network(PREVNet), and Kingston Eco-nomic Development Corporation’s(KEDCO) night economy project.

Since mid-fall, the teamsworked closely with their partnersunder the guidance of an alumnusor retiree mentor to identify thescope of the project, develop andimplement a plan of action, andpresent deliverables.

“I learned a lot about projectmanagement and communicationsfrom working with our commu-nity partners and stakeholders,”says Hasan Kettaneh, a first-yeardoctoral candidate in education.“It was challenging in the begin-ning, but we established commu-nications processes and trust andthat was key to the success of ourproject.”

Chinese students get best of both worlds through 2+2 programBY WANDA PRAAMSMA, SENIORCOMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Peiwen Li and Ying Chen agreethat it’s great to have the best ofboth worlds – studying both attheir home university, Tongji Uni-versity, in Shanghaiand here at Queen’s– through a 2+2program betweenthe two institutionsthat began in thefall of 2015.

“We get to expe-rience both univer-sities, receive de-grees from both universities, andspend a long period of time in an-other country,” says Ms. Li, who,along with Ms. Chen and threeothers from Tongji, will graduatefrom the program this spring. “Itis really useful to be here longenough to learn more about theculture and learn the languagefully.”

Students enrolled in the 2+2program first spend two years atTongji’s College of EnvironmentalScience and Engineering and then,two years in Queen’s School of En-vironmental Studies. Upon gradu-ation, they are awarded a degreefrom both universities.

“It has been a really good expe-rience that has broadened ourhorizons,” says Ms. Chen, whohas most enjoyed the field work atthe Queen’s University BiologyStation (QUBS) and an interna-tional field course in Mexico of-

fered by Professor StephenLougheed, as well as a fieldcourse offered through Trent Uni-versity in Hong Kong and Taiwan.“It’s been interesting to see the dif-ferences in the two education sys-tems and the ways of teaching andlearning. Knowing both academicworlds will likely help us with ourwork in the future.”

Ms. Chen and Ms. Li say thefocus at Tongji was more on engi-neering, while at Queen’s, courseshave centred on the social sci-ences. At Queen’s, they’ve hadmore flexibility in the courses theycan choose, and they’ve enjoyedthe longer summer break, whichgave them the opportunity to seekout different experiences andspend time thinking about futurepossibilities (in China, studentstypically only have about twomonths off). They both have really

appreciated the support from fac-ulty members and teaching assis-tants, who have understood thechallenges associated with study-ing in a second language and wereable to direct them to resourcesacross campus, such as the Writ-ing Centre.

“The Tongji 2+2 program offersexciting opportunities for Chinesestudents joining us at Queen’s andit enriches teaching and learningexperiences for all Queen’s stu-dents, staff and faculty who bene-fit from exposure to diverse andglobal perspectives,” says AliceHovorka, Director, School of Envi-ronmental Studies. “Ultimately,such international programs pro-mote cross-cultural understand-ings between our respective insti-tutions and contexts.”

Ms. Li spent last summerworking with Dr. Lougheed in a

lab on campus – performing DNAextraction from fish samples –through the Summer Work Expe-rience Program (SWEP), whichshe says was an excellent way togain exposure to lab work. Shealso visited QUBS several timesthroughout the summer to attendseminars and the field station’s an-nual open house – all valuable ex-periences for Ms. Li.

Also in her first year atQueen’s, Ms. Li received theCharles Baillie EnvironmentalStudies Scholarship, awarded onthe basis of excellence to studentsentering fourth year of any under-graduate degree program in theSchool of Environmental Studies.

“It was an honour to receivethe award. It felt very encourag-ing,” says Ms. Li, who will con-tinue with graduate work atQueen’s, beginning a PhD next fallwith Dr. Lougheed studying Arc-tic ecosystems. Ms. Chen will alsobe staying at Queen’s and workingon a master’s degree with Dr.Lougheed – but while Ms. Li lovesthe detailed focus of lab work, Ms.Chen loves being outside and inthe field. Her graduate work willfocus on frog phenology – lookingat how different biological factorsand cycles, such as temperatureand humidity, affect their behav-iour.

Four other Tongji students arecurrently enrolled in the first yearof the two-year program and willcomplete their degrees in 2018.

The 2+2 program is one of sev-

eral programs and initiatives be-tween Queen’s and Tongji Univer-sity. In 2013, Queen’s and Tongjiestablished the Sino-Canada Net-work for Environment and Sus-tainable Development, which pro-vides a platform for researchcollaboration between facultymembers at both institutions, andopportunities for exchange andtraining. In 2015, Queen’s begancollaborating with Tongji on theInternational Research Laboratoryof Yangtze River Ecology, or Inte-lab-Yangtze.

Internationalization in one ofthe four pillars of the Queen’s Uni-versity Strategic Framework 2014–2019. The Comprehensive Interna-tional Plan was launched inAugust 2015 to help the universitybuild on its international strengthsand direct future internationaliza-tion efforts. The plan’s goals in-clude strengthening Queen’s inter-national research engagement andcreating more opportunities forstudent mobility through aca-demic exchange and study-abroadprograms.

The plan also aims to attracthigh-quality international stu-dents to Queen’s and to increaseinternational educational opportu-nities on Queen’s campus. Chinais a region of focus within theplan. Sumner, Staehli compete at worldsBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

A pair of Queen’s Universityathletes and a Queen’s alumna re-cently competed in the IAAFWorld Cross Country Champi-onships in Kampala, Uganda.

Claire Sumner and Julie-AnneStaehli competed alongside Victo-ria Coates in representing Canadain the women’s senior event at theworlds on Sunday, March 26.

The event drew more than 550athletes from 60 countries

Coates had the best result, fin-ishing 47th in a time of 36:11 whileSumner, the 2016 U Sports andOUA cross country gold medalistand MVP, was not far behind,placing 52nd in 36:36. Staehli, aformer U Sports and OUA goldmedalist and MVP, as well as theonly five-time All-Canadian in thehistory of Queen’s, completed thecourse in 36:58, good enough for59th out of a field of 105 runners.

The powerhouse Kenyan teamdominated the race with its ath-letes taking the top six places, led

by Irene Cheptai who crossed theline in 31:57.

Staehli, Sumner and Coatesqualified to represent Canada

based on their finish at the 2016Canadian Cross Country Champi-onships that were held inKingston on Nov. 26.

The 10-km race was run overfour laps on the 2.5 km course.
