A pizza party sponsored by Constantly Pizza immediately followed the ceremony. This year’s calendar will be dedicated to former Fire Marshal J. William “Bill” Degnan for his passion and dedicaon to fire and life safety educaon to the cizens and visitors of New Hampshire. On April 4 2019 a celebration for the 3rd grade Fire and Life Safety poster contest winners

was held with a ceremony and awards at the NH State Fire Academy Sparky was there to

greet the students and families as they arrived Special remarks were given by Department

of Safety Commissioner Robert Quinn State Fire Marshal Paul Parisi and Department of

Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut The students were presented with a Junior Fire

Marshal plaque a certificate of achievement and a childrenrsquos book I Survived the Great

Chicago Fire 1871 by Lauren Tarshis A pizza party sponsored by Constantly Pizza

immediately followed the ceremony This yearrsquos calendar will be dedicated to former Fire

Marshal J William ldquoBillrdquo Degnan for his passion and dedication to fire and life safety

education to the citizens and visitors of New Hampshire Bill strongly believes and has

The Chemistry of Fire

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers has put together a new in-school program titled ldquoThe Chemistry of Firerdquo The program was funded by a grant from the US Department of Homeland Security The Chemistry of Fire is geared to high school chemistry students It will teach students the science behind fire as a way for students to fully understand its dangers Follow the link for more information including a teacherrsquos resource guide and seven supporting videos

FIRE amp LIFE SAFETY EDUCATION The Public Education Section knows and respects that many agencies and

departments throughout the state use and create their own fire and life safety

outreach materials props and programs to utilize within your community We would

like to learn about your program so that you and your department can be

THE TEENAGE BRAIN RISKY OR READY TO LEARN

Too often we respond to adolescents with a fear based approach that shut teens out or

locks them down robbing them of the learning and growth that their brains are designed

for Dr Dave Walsh and his wife Dr Erin Walsh of Mind Positive Parenting have written

some excellent articles about working with adolescents Here is one about understanding

teenagers

Young people are exposed to more news in more ways than prior generations Learning

how to discern credible sources from questionable ones and having the tools to

understand bias spin and framing are even more important Read this article about

media literacy and the internet here

NH YOUTH FIRESETTER REPORTING

Each year in the United States fires that are set by youths account for a large amount of property loss personal injury and death According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) arson is the second leading cause of residential fire deaths Arson is also the leading cause of dollar loss from fire exceeding over two billion dollars a year According to the most recent NFPA report on youth set fires between 2007 and 2011 an average of 49300 fires involving playing with fire were reported to US municipal f ire departments each year During this same timeframe NH reported a total of 88 youth set fires NH youth firesetting is grossly under acknowledged and underreported The NH State Fire Marshalrsquos Office asks that we all be more vigilant in identifying

reporting assessing and providing the appropriate necessary intervention

Increased reporting will provide NH with valuable information on

1 NH youth firesetting behaviors

2 How to assist in developing more effective intervention strategies

3 Gaining financial support through grant opportunities

4 Community awareness

5 Better data on New Hampshire youth offenders

The NH Youth Firesetters Intervention amp Education Guideline is designed as a professional resource

tool to guide and assist communities and regional organizations in creating operating and managing

an effective Youth Firesetter Intervention amp Education Program This guide assists from the moment of

notification (of a youth firesetter) to performing a proper assessment and then choosing the

appropriate intervention program including educating youth firesetters and their families

It is our hope that by providing this manual it will provide the necessary direction and assistance to

the various departments and agencies that are looking to solidify their current YFS program or

establish one within their citytown or region

The State Fire Marshalrsquos Award of Excellence in Fire amp Life Safety program recognizes New Hampshire students in grades prekindergarten through high school that complete an outstanding act in the area of Fire and Life Safety that benefits the lives and wellbeing of those around them Anyone who observes or hears of a studentrsquos heroic actions during a fire andor life threatening emergency can nominate a student by filling out an application

USFA Releases Fire Risk Report

Each year from 2014 to 2016 fire departments responded to an estimated average of 188800 cooking fires in residential buildings across the nation These fires resulted in an annual average of 195 deaths 3800 injuries and $463 million in property loss The term ldquocooking firesrdquo includes those fires that were caused by stoves ovens fixed and portable warming units deep-fat fryers and open grills as well as those fires that are confined to the cooking vessel To read the entire USFA report click here
