1950 Ferrari 275S/340 America Could Sell for £5.5m

A "highly significant" Ferrari which was one of the Italian firm's first ever cars is expected to sell for £5.5 million at

auction. The 1950 Ferrari 275S/340 America was raced by the factory's team with legendary driver Alberto Ascari

behind the wheel.

Ascari drove the racer at the grueling Mille Miglia with Ferrari then putting the open top 'Barchetta' on display at the

1950 Paris Motor Show. The stunning car started out life with a 3.3-litre engine, but engineers at Ferrari upgraded it

by fitting a more powerful 4.1-litre unit.

Enzo Ferrari later sold it to Scuderia Marzotto which continued to race it at the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. After a

demanding race career, it was sold to an American in 1957 and remained across the Atlantic for the next 30 years.

It eventually made its way back to Europe, where it has been a frequent sight at such prestigious historic racing

events as the Mille Miglia Storica.

The car is known as 0030 MT, is one of just two of its type ever built and, as one of the earliest racing Ferraris, it is

very desirable. Its current owner, believed to be a wealthy European, has now decided to sell and has entered it

into this summer's RM Sotheby's sale in Monterey, USA.

RM Sotheby's expects the Ferrari to sell for around £5.5 million - making it one of the most expensive 1950’s car to

ever be sold publicly. Annette Abaci, car specialist, RM Sotheby's, said: "A Scuderia Ferrari from birth, 0030 MT

presents a very special opportunity to acquire one of the marque's earliest racers.

"Not only does it combine beautiful design with a fierce 12-cylinder engine, but it has a fantastic provenance and

race record which saw it compete in many of the world's most important races in period, from the Mille Miglia to

Monaco and beyond, driven by such legends as Alberto Ascari, Giovanni Bracco, and Gianni Marzotto. "Offered for

auction complete with its Ferrari Classiche White Book, it is eligible for all of the world's leading historic events."

Watch Ferrari LaFerrari HOWL In A Carpark

LaFerrari is one of the hypercars of the moment, a car that is set to join the Porsche 918 Spyder and the McLaren

P1 as the three hybrid performance vehicles that will redefine the industry. Seeing LaFerrari on the streets is a rare

occurrence. However, London is an exception where the Italian hypercars are regularly seen causing the streets.

Here we have a spectacular video featuring a Rosso Corsa LaFerrari revving in an underground car park where its

sublime revs echo and reverberate. The glorious sound comes courtesy of of the cars V12. As a reminder, LaFerrari

gets a 6.3 liter V12 which is connected to an electric motor similar to the system on the McLaren P1. The Ferrari

F150 V12 has an output of 800hp at 9.000 RPM and 700Nm at 7.000 RPM while its electric motor has a maximum

output of 163hp and 270Nm of torque. That delivers a total combined power output of 963hp, allowing the new

Ferrari Enzo to do 0-100 km/h in less than 3 seconds, 0-300 km/h in 15 seconds and a top speed in excess of 350

km/h.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton buys a Ferrari

CNN)—Formula One's Lewis Hamilton may drive a Silver Arrows on the track, but on the road it seems he prefers a

Prancing Horse. The Mercedes-driving world champion has followed up victory at the recent Australian Grand Prix

by purchasing a limited edition Ferrari for a cool $1.5 million. "LaFerrari" is a hybrid supercar boasting a maximum

speed of more than 350 km/h (217 mph) and can accelerate from 0-200 km/h (124 mph) in a mere seven seconds.

The speedy purchase was confirmed by a spokesman of Mercedes-Benz Motorsports, with Toto Wolff -- Mercedes'

team principle -- telling Italy's Corriere Della Sera: "For us there is no problem." (Susie East)


Maserati MC12 With Only 850 km For Sale at Romans International

Whereas 400 examples of the Ferrari Enzo were created, a mere 50 Maserati MC12s were created. As a result of

being significantly rarer than its supercar sibling, it is quite rare for MC12s to hit the market. Despite that, one

pristine example is currently up for sale courtesy of Romans International for an undisclosed amount.

What we do know about this particular MC12 is that it has a mere 857 km on the odometer. Consequently, there’s

no doubt that Romans International will be looking for over $1.5 million USD for the car considering another

example hit the market last year for $1.85 million having travelled 1940 km.

As with almost all road-going MC12s, the example in question combines blue elements with pearl white to create an

exceptionally stylish and sophisticated look. The exterior is finished off with silver wheels and unlike the Ferrari

Enzo on which the MC12 is based; the Maserati’s roof can actually be removed turning it into a roadster.

In case you didn’t know, the Maserati MC12 is powered by a 6.5-litre V12 engine sourced from the Enzo, with a

total output of 620 hp and 652 Nm of torque. It can do 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and a maximum of 330 km/h,

certainly no slouch by any standard.


Watch a Ferrari 250 SWB Being Restored

James Cottingham oversaw the demanding process of returning a car to how it looked when it left the factory in

1962.

It all started when he was approached by a Ferrari collector at an Italian car event in 2013. After a conversation, he

was given the difficult task of sourcing, restoring, and delivering his client a show-class Ferrari 250 SWB.

The 250 SWB is regarded as one of the finest, prettiest and rarest Ferraris and the right ones aren't cheap or easy

to find. But James unearthed a 1962, red model which had spent the last 15 years gathering dust in Northern Italy.

A deal on the 150 mph sports car was agreed, and it was brought over to the UK in a transporter truck which is

when 18 months of hard work began. DK Engineering, which is based in Hertfordshire, has restored more than 200

Ferraris since the 1970s and this 250 SWB is among the most interesting cars they have worked on.

James, a vehicle acquisition specialist at the family-run firm, said: "We were searching for a special car and we

stumbled across this one by mistake. "The aim was to restore it back to how it looked the day it left the Ferrari

factory. It was a decent car in good condition and importantly it had matching numbers. Many classic Ferraris have

had a lot of work done on them but we found this to be one of the most original SWBs we have ever come across."

Despite being in good condition, when it arrived in the UK at DK Engineering it was stripped completely. It took

around two-to-three weeks to strip the car and a further twelve months to restore and put it back together. What

they found underneath was the most original steel short-wheelbase they had ever restored.


The engine rebuild was a 200 hour job while a team of perfectionists from Spray-Tec Restorations spent a

staggering 500 hours on the paintwork. Spraying the body is only 0.5 per cent of the job with the remainder going

into the meticulous preparation.

When the cars were built by Ferrari in the 1960s, it was all about producing the car as quickly as possible. But with

the restoration, time wasn't as much of an issue with the team employed by DK Engineering spending longer to

make it perfect.

Then there was the trim work, which is now better than it was when it left the Ferrari factory in 1962. It is a job which

DK regards as one of the most difficult parts of a restoration. James said: "It really is an artist's job. Rob O'Rourke is

an artist himself, he helps bring the highest quality finish and attention to detail when it comes to restoring a car like

this. "When restoring the body, it would have been tempting to the car more symmetrical and make it better. But we

trod a fine line during the restoration process to retain the originality of the car and make it as perfect as possible."

When the 18-month project came to a conclusion, the Ferrari was delivered to its delighted owner, a Brit who lives

in Switzerland. James added: "The first time we took it up the road was great. It went so well. It is one of the best

SWBs in existence. "It is so original and it has unique features which make it ideal for concours events. "The SWB

was a production car and most were the same but this one is unique. It was originally delivered to a Swiss man,

before heading to the USA and back to Switzerland. We don't know who the original owner was but we expect he

would have been a wealthy and important man. This car will be shown at concours events around the world but

ultimately we make cars so they work, and this car will be as good in 20 years as it is today." (WMNJBayley)

Hollywood royalty Robert De Niro is cruising into his next role as the legendary Italian car brand founder Enzo Ferrari. The biopic, which will be shot in Italy, is set for release in 2016, reports motorsport.com. "For me it is an honor and a joy to tell the life of an extraordinary man who revolutionized the automotive world and across historical periods," the 71-year-old actor told the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero. Actor Jason Statham is no stranger to amazing cars. He stars as bad guy Deckard Shaw in Furious 7 where he gets

How to Get the Right Insurance for Your Classic Car

Regardless if you have a car already, or are in the process of purchasing one, one thing that every owner will

need—unless you live in the “Live Free or Die” state of New Hampshire—is car insurance coverage. Now, you may

ask, "Why is Petrolicious telling me about something so obvious?”

If I have an accident while driving, or my car is stolen, I will be covered against damages and other losses.

However, unlike modern cars it may make sense to seek out the different insurance to cover your classic. This is

oftentimes best provided by a company that provides specialty car insurance.

Major insurance companies like Geico, Safeco, Allstate, AIG, and esurance offer policies, but there are several

others that focus exclusively on specialty car insurance: Hagerty, Leland-West, Heacock, Grundy, and American

Collectors are just a few of the names that operate in this field.

Let’s examine why a conventional policy might not be good enough. Is conventional auto insurance good enough?


Unlike most modern cars, classic cars can actually appreciate in value as they grow older. Tabetha Hammer of

Hagerty Insurance says that’s exactly the reason why you shouldn’t cover one of these vehicles with a standard car

insurance company. “One of the most important things to recognize is that most daily driver insurance policies do

not take into consideration the fact that collector vehicle values typically increase rather than decrease.”

Time for a lesson in insurance terminology: If you total your daily driver, your regular car insurance company pays

you only the actual cash value of the car. When it calculates this amount, it includes the car’s depreciation in their

formula. Because most modern cars are, with very few exceptions, worth less and less every year, you will not

receive the full amount you paid for the car.

Classic cars can be insured for their agreed value or stated value. You and the specialty insurance company accord

a value for your classic and it agrees to pay up to that amount in the case of a total loss. Matt Robertson, of Leland-

West Insurance, says it all comes down to a term called “agreed value”.

"Collectors and enthusiasts choose specialty insurance carriers because first and foremost they want an agreed

value, once they learn what that means,” Robertson says. “A given vehicle's true market value may exceed—

sometimes dramatically—what a book or online source publishes. If the worst happens and the car is totaled, they

don't want any surprises. Only an agreed value policy offers a known, etched-in-stone value on their car that will be

paid in the event of a claim.”

How is my car’s value determined?

The specialty car insurance companies have their eye on the pulse of the collector car market, and are constantly

monitoring trends in the marketplace, auctions, and other sources for the most up to date pricing information.

Hagerty also publishes its own proprietary price guide which is a great tool for any enthusiast, and provides the

company’s viewpoint about where prices are trending for a particular car.

Selling price is a factor, but most every company will work with you to assess an accurate value of your vehicle. For

something truly specialized, an appraisal of your vehicle might be needed.


Are there restrictions?

In a nutshell, yes. Firstly, your car has to fall into one of several collector car categories to qualify for this special

collector car insurance, and each insurer has a different list of prerequisites. Your car (or cars) must be stored in a

secured location, and there are some usage restrictions as well. As cool as your car is, and as much as you want to

drive it every day, you can’t use it as a daily driver. While all companies have specific restrictions, Tabetha Hammer

says Hagerty’s are typical for the industry.

“Our policy allows you to use your collector vehicle for club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours and even

pleasure driving—it just can’t be your daily driver,” she says.

Every owner's situation will be different, and there is no one solution. If you have a specific question, ask a company

representative. Some allowances for flexibility can be made, but they may cost an additional premium. Leland-West

offers an endorsement that allows some limited to and from work driving, for instance.

Do I need to have modern daily driver to qualify?

Yes. Every company offering these policies makes it clear that the cars you insure with them are for a limited

“pleasure only” basis, so you must have a separate, properly-insured car for daily driving chores. Because most

specialty insurance companies limit the number of miles you can drive your car each year, and place other

restrictions on their use, that makes specialty coverage more affordable than you may expect.

“The average premium of a Hagerty policy is on average 45% lower than daily driver insurance,” says Hammer.

After all, the less time you spend on the road in your daily driver, the less likely you are to have an accident.

Are there mileage restrictions?

Most of the specialty car insurance companies put some limits on how much you can drive. You can buy a policy for

more mileage or even unlimited mileage from some, but it will cost more. There’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Check with your insurance company, but generally the closer to home you stay, the lower the premium.


Can my highly-modified car be insured?

Yes. But check and disclose those modifications to the insurance company before you sign up for a policy—it

prevents problems from arising later.

Most conventional insurance companies have no love for modified vehicles. Robertson perhaps sums it best by

saying, "if it has at least four wheels and its cool, we want to do it”—but first report the mods to your vehicle.

You are entering into a contract with the insurance company when you take out a policy, and like you, it has certain

obligations to fulfill. Disclosure ensures that you’ll covered in a time of need.

Can I race my car?

No…and yes. Specialty car insurance companies will insure your car, but not while they are running on the track.

The price for this coverage is very low, because for the most part, your car spends 99% of its time off-track.

If you want to race, or participate in a track day—and want to have full confidence that you will be insured should

something go wrong—you will have to purchase a separate policy from an even more specialized niche of car

insurance provider.

What if I’m restoring my car?

Yes, again. The policies are generally very low cost, as the car is off the road while you nurse it back to health.

Being off the road means you don’t need to maintain certain components of insurance like liability—your car won’t

be the cause of any on the road accidents.

You might need to tell the insurance company where the car is being restored, as your car will likely be kept in a

different place, like at a mechanic or restoration shop.

Saving on insurance is great, but keep in mind that as the value of your car increases from the work you’re

undertaking, you should reevaluate its worth with your insurer.


I have a lot of expensive spare parts. Are they covered?

You’ve put some rare parts away for a rainy day…or just because you might never find a specific part again. (Or

you’re a hoarder.) We get it, and so do the insurance companies. Many cover your spare parts for loss, to a

predetermined limit. You can, however, always purchase additional coverage with a higher loss limit.

It will cost extra money, but it’s added peace of mind that your rare early Porsche 911 sport seats or Rudge wheels

will be covered if they are destroyed or stolen.

What happens if I have an accident?

OK, you’re insured…but sadly, you have to make a claim.

By and large the claims process is the same as with your regular insurance company: an adjuster is assigned to

your case, and will discuss the loss and damages with you.

Where the process differs from your standard insurance company, says Leland-West’s Robertson is that classic car

insurers are much more in tune with the repair costs of often rare and more unique cars.

"In this case, you're dealing with someone who is trained to understand the situation and not lose his or her mind

when you have a broken windshield that’s going to run $10,000 to replace,” he says. “This is the business we are in.

It is also expected that you will take the vehicle to the shop of your choice. We don't do the three-estimate thing and

neither has I suspect done anyone else in the specialty market.”

At Hagerty, Hammer echoes this sentiment, and the company even retains its own parts concierge.

“We offer stock original replacement parts to ensure your investment is covered and your car is restored to its

former glory. Our on-staff parts specialist will hunt down rare and hard to find parts and you can pick the repair shop

of your choice. And if nobody touches your car but you, we’ll even pay you to do the work.”


Is my car insured during shipping?

Yes. While best practice dictates you should ship a vehicle using a professional, insured transport company that

has their own coverage that coverage, all insurance policies include a provision within them that gives you

automatic coverage on a new vehicle purchase with some limits to the potential loss.

However, once you report the car to your friendly specialty car insurance company, and your policy has been

approved, you’re covered to the limits of your policy. Overseas shipping (and use) is generally not covered. For that,

you’ll need to purchase a supplemental policy, which would be good if you’re participating in the Mille Miglia or Holy

land 1000, for instance.

Roadside Assistance

Specialty car insurance companies know their clientele, and don’t want you stranded by the side of the road.

If you experience a problem, most of these companies promise great service by providing a roadside assistance

center staffed with collector car experts, and a flatbed tow truck so your car won’t suffer the indignity of being towed

by only one pair of wheels. Hagerty’s service even brought some gas for a car stranded on the first Petrolicious

Malibu Rally!

I’m a younger driver. Do I qualify?

It depends on the company, and how young you are, but generally younger drivers are welcome too—as long as

they have several years of driving experience, and generally speaking, a clean driving record.

The collector car hobby is getting more youth-oriented every day, and companies recognize that. No teenage

drivers though.

A specialty car insurance is probably more expensive…right?

Beyond driving their cars less, Robertson of Leland West says that owners themselves often help to keep premiums

low.


"Owners of these sorts of cars tend to be very protective, and take very good care of them. In recognition of this

extra level of care, love and attention, rates are lower. That’s the insurance company giving some back.”

In a nutshell: keep babying your baby, keep a clean driving record, and you’ll be rewarded with low rates.

Your satisfaction with your insurance carrier is important, and nobody really knows how good their company is until

they, unfortunately, have a claim.

As well as by supporting initiatives within collector car community. Most everyone knows that one should research

any company before signing up. Claims satisfaction and service are two important factors. Two other important

terms that people might not be aware of are NPS scores and A.M. Best Company ratings.

The former is a score about the company’s overall satisfaction rating from clients. The latter is a great tool for

finding out the insurance company’s financial stability.

There are no “one size fits all” answers to insurance. Everyone’s situation is different. Best practice suggests that

you review any classic car insurance policy and review the valuation statements and usage restrictions to confirm

that they work well for you, but both Hagerty and Leland West are staffed with dedicated individuals who

understand your car isn’t a Toyota Camry.

In fact, both Hammer and Robertson are not only classic car professionals, they are also owners of some vintage

iron themselves, as are many others in their organizations. Give them and others a call. If you own a vintage car,

case, it was during the filming of John Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix, where the actor would take on the role of

Formula 1 driver Pete Aron.


The book takes us almost chronologically through Garner’s motoring life, commencing with the filming of Grand Prix

where Garner first showed a natural ability for racing. Bob Bondurant, who wrote the foreword for this book, and

under whom Garner trained during filming, says that he immediately sensed that Garner, “might have enjoyed a

good career as a professional racer” if the actor had started earlier.

The film crew didn’t have to tow Jim Garner’s car around the track like they did with co-star Yves Montand, or put

professional driver Jackie Stewart in the car as a substitute for the actor Brian Bedford, who portrayed Garner’s

teammate. Regardless, Garner caught a “bug” from filming Grand Prix, and it bit hard.

He plunged himself headfirst into both on-road and off-road motorsport, forming the AIR racing team (American

International Racing) almost immediately after filming on Grand Prix was completed.

The team would enjoy some success at Daytona, and Sebring, with Garner primarily acting as owner, and manager.

As a driver, though, off-road is where the actor would distinguish himself. Garner would compete in the Baja 500,

amongst other events, several times, notably in a very custom Oldsmobile “Banshee”, which was based on the

Cutlass, and which the actor would personally helped develop.

He would never win any of the events, but always finished, and notched up some impressive class results. The

actor’s presence at off-road events helped to generate publicity, and the ensuing coverage on ABC’s Wide World of

Sports helped spur off-road sports growing popularity. While Garner would wind down his AIR racing team after only

two years, he kept off-roading, and in 1978 the actor was inducted to the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. High

praise indeed.

His passion for cars also came through in the book within the later chapters, where the cars his characters drove

on-screen, such as the gold Pontiac Firebird Esprit in The Rockford Files, and his promotional work for General

Motors, are described.

James Garner’s Motoring Life is an entertaining read for those interested to learn more about a side of the actor’s

life that is not as well-known as it ought to have been. Author Stone, who also wrote car guy biographies on

Newman and McQueen, includes many interviews from some of Garner's racing compatriots, and friends, and the

book is filled with wonderful photos of the man with his fellow actors, and with the many cars he owned or drove in

his movies, TV shows, and during his racing career. $34.95

Hooked On Driving is a leading provider of performance driving programs, commonly known as an high performance

driving experience (HPDE), or high performance driving school (HPDS). These programs are run on Track Days, at

regional tracks such as Thunderhill Raceway, Laguna Seca, Reno-Fernley, Pocono, Autobahn Country club, and many

others. See below for a complete list of Track day venues. We give drivers of high performance cars and sports cars the

opportunity to drive their cars on a race track.

During the first sessions a coach will ride in the passenger seat, and teach the driver high performance driving

techniques. All new drivers need to participate is a helmet (available rentals), and an inspection to be sure their car is

roadworthy. Beginners are given a thorough briefing and are introduced to their coach before they drive their car on the

track. The initial "A Group" for beginning HPDE drivers, teaches smoothness, awareness, and driving a proper, safe and

efficient line on track. A priority is also placed on learning basic car control skills such as late braking, proper shifting

and understanding the concept of the apex of a turn.

While A group has significant passing restrictions to maintain a conservative pace, the B - Intermediate, C - Advanced,

and D - Race-prepped groups have progressively more flexible passing rules and advanced level coaching. There is

NEVER any competition — wheel to wheel or timed laps — in our programs. Hooked on Driving HPDE Programs are

safe experiences for all, an enjoyable time for every driver — and to assure that our drivers come away with much more
