Term 1 Week 10 4 April 2019 Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Athletics Carnivals
Yesterday we had perfect conditions for both K-2 and 3-6 athletics carnivals. The K-2 carnival was held at school with
highly engaging rotation of athletics activities coordinated our teachers. Ms Greeshaw and Mrs Reid did a fantastic
job coordinating the carnival with the support of K-2 teachers.

The 3-6 carnival was again held at the Sylvania athletics track and we had a fantastic turnout from students
including over 20 Year 2 students competing in the 8 year old and junior events. All students participated with
enthusiasm and should be proud of their efforts on the day. It was great to have so many parent helpers volunteer
to help out with field events and other roles throughout the day and I must acknowledge the effort and commitment
of teachers who coordinated different events with minimal break times on such a warm day. Mr Hoff did an
outstanding job of coordinating the entire event and I congratulate all students for their participation and especially
those students who performed to their best and gained places in the team to represent the school at the zone
carnival in Term 3.

2019 SSPS Debating Teams
Congratulations to the 10 girls who made it into the debating teams. Our 2019 debaters are
The Persuasives: Felicia D, Ella W, Rhianna K, Gloria H and Larissa G.
The Talk-a-lots: Lily C, Hunter H, Lily P, Ava B and Theodora A.
There were a number of students who tried out for debating and the decision was very difficult, we appreciate you all
giving up your time for such a worthwhile activity. We are looking forward to being able to come together as a team
and use our debating skills at the Term 2 competition. The upcoming workshop in Term 2 will also be a highlight –
more details to follow as we receive them.

Easter Hat Parade
Next Thursday the K-2 Easter Hat Parade will take place in the primary playground at 9:30am. Parents and Carers of
K-2 students are welcome to watch the event and we look forward to an array of colourful and creative hats!
Easter Raffle
Thanks to all community members that have so far supported the Year 6 Easter Raffle. Tickets will be on sale under
the canteen COLA each morning until next Thursday and the major prizes will be announced at the Easter Hat
Parade. Special thanks must go to Mr Richardson who has coordinated the raffle and to the students, teachers and
parents who sold tickets and helped to wrap the huge amount of prizes.
Leadership by the River
Today it was my privilege to accompany our 2019 Student Leadership Team to the Leadership by the River
conference. This is a very prestigious event and as one of 26 schools participating, our team listened to two guest
speakers and engaged in several team-building activities. Over the next few months the SSPS team will also be
developing a project which will sustainable and a part of our community.
The NSW Department of Education is currently promoting the message that "young people are at the centre of all
our decision making’; and with this year’s Education Week theme, 'Every student, Every voice', this will be an
exciting opportunity for students to learn about the power of their voice and to further develop their capacity as young
leaders.
Looking forward to seeing what our team comes up with in 2019.

Parent-Teacher Interviews
Parent-Teacher interviews are now underway as many parents have successfully booked an interview online
through the new Sentral Parent Portal. As the online booking system closed on Sunday at 11pm, parent and carers
are no longer able to book an interview online. However, as this is the first time that interviews have been booked
through the Sentral Parent Portal, parents who haven't yet booked an interview with their child's teacher may
contact the school to manually book an interview from any available time slots remaining. This will also be a great
opportunity for parents and carers to register for access to the Sentral Parent Portal for future access.
Indonesian Incursion Tuesday 2nd of April 2019
Today the whole of Stage 2 went into the hall to watch an
Indonesian incursion. The lady was from Bali in Indonesia and
showed us some traditional dances. Firstly the performer Ibue
sister showed us how to do the welcome dance, as well as how to
count to ten and say the alphabet in Indonesian.
Secondly she told us how to pronounce animals in Indonesian.
There was an animal called the bird of paradise that was a
traditional animal and there was a pair of wings that she used to do
a dance with.
Thirdly there was a bamboo instrument that we got to try. You had
to hold it from the top with one hand and with the other you would
hold it on the bottom and have a finger on the side of the tube.
In my opinion I think it was a great experience to learn a bit more
about the Indonesian culture. By going to this excursion today I
have learnt that Australia is very different to Indonesia.

I, Ethan C, Felicia D, Hunter H, Josh M, Louisa B, Michaela S, Nicolas V, Theodora A and Zahra H auditioned to
participate in the local schools creative arts program named 'Create South'. These students have been nominated

PSSA Winter Sports Trials
Over the final weeks of term, students in Years 3-6 will have opportunities to try out for PSSA winter sports teams.
Sports being offered are; Boys soccer, Girls soccer, Girls netball and Boys and Girls mixed Oztag. Please note that
participation in a PSSA team is a paid sport option and will incur a fee of approximately $100. Not all students
trying out for a PSSA team will be successful in gaining selection but once PSSA teams have been finalised

option. There will also be school sport which incurs no cost and is held on Friday mornings in the school grounds.

Mindfulness in Action Program
The final sessions for Mindfulness in Action for Stage 2 & 3 students will take place over the next two weeks. The
school will be evaluating the success of the program and feedback from the community is also welcome. Next term
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students will begin their Mindfulness in Action program from Week 2 on Mondays
or Wednesdays. A timetable will be sent home prior to the start of the program.
ANZAC Commemorations
In the lead up to ANZAC Day our school will be been involved in a number of events. On Tuesday April 9 school
captains Ellie and Noah C will attend the RSL & Schools Remember ANZAC Commemoration Service in Hyde
Park. Mr Knight will accompany the students for this event. Our school representatives will listen to a range of
speakers and participate in a wreath laying ceremony. We would like to thank the Ramsgate RSL Sub Branch for
inviting us to participate in this ceremony.
On Wednesday April 10 the school will hold a K-6 ANZAC Ceremony in the assembly hall. This important annual
event will commence in the school hall at 9:30am. I must acknowledge Mr Lowe for coordinating the event and all
students and teachers for engaging in related classroom activities throughout the week.
Two of our school leaders will also be reading a prayer at the Ramsgate RSL service on ANZAC Day.
Tell Them from Me student feedback surveys
This term we’ll be seeking the participation from our Years 4 and 6 students in the Department of Education
initiative: ‘Tell Them from Me’ student feedback surveys.
Our students have participated in a Tell Them from Me student survey for several years now and the data collected
from the surveys is valuable in evaluating a number of school programs. Students will also be asked to complete
the survey in Term Three allowing the school to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement
and motivation across the school year.
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable feedback
on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different
ways that teachers interact with them. The short, on-line survey is confidential and will
be administered during school hours. Student participation in the survey is entirely
voluntary.
School Levy and Optional Activity Payments
This week a reminder for outstanding school levies and/or optional activities has been sent home with students
and I thank those families that have finalised Term 1 payments. The school has requested that all Term 1
payments to be finalised prior to Wednesday April 10. If payments are not finalised by the end of term, students will
not be permitted to continue participation in optional activities such as PSSA sport & paid sport options, band,
dance & recorder. Families that are experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to contact the principal.
Volunteers needed for small paving job
Our P&C Personalised Pavers fundraiser has been really well supported. If there is a community member out with
landscaping or bricklaying skills willing to install 120 pavers to support our P&C fundraiser please contact the
school office. This fundraiser will go towards the P&C funding $50 000 to furnish the school’s new Innovative
Learning Lounge Area (ILLA) – previously known as the computer lab.

There are a number of school uniform items in the Lost Property box under the canteen COLA, including items left
at the athletics carnival yesterday. If your child has lost any uniform items please check the Lost Property box by
Tuesday next week as the remaining items will be discarded if not claimed. Thanks to the parent volunteers who
have been sorting lost unlabelled lost property each term.
