NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE NEWSLETTER

We’re 110 years old this year! Here are 5 things we bet you never knew about Neighborhood House:

Our first location in 1906 was the lower level of a home on 12th Ave. and Washington St. in Seattle, just four blocks from our current Central Office.

Jimi Hendrix spent his formative years in Yesler Terrace, and his band used to jam at Neighborhood House’s teen dances. Former Gov. Gary Locke also lived in Yesler.

Our Head Start preschool was one of the first in the country.

To address juvenile delinquency in Yesler Terrace, we created a musical group called The King Cobras in the 1950’s.

A sewing school for 30 girls was one of our earliest programs.

Did you know?

Faces in Our House

Seeing the diligence and hard work my team puts in for our clients is the most re-warding part for me. A close second would be the potlucks and all the new friends I’ve made at Neighborhood House.

What’s the one thing people should know about our agency?

As our Employment & Adult Education Manager, what do you do?

What languages do you speak?

We’re providing career services but also offer a listening ear, hope and encouragement. That can go a long way.

I manage a group of programs focused on helping people achieve education and career goals. I get to work with a remarkable team of employment and education specialists based across King County.

I speak French, some basic Arabic and some Swahili. I need to learn more Swahili and keep practicing Arabic, so if anyone wants to set up a language club, please let me know!

Thanks to a new research-focused pilot project called RISE (Resources to Initiate Successful Employment) funded by the Department of Social and Health Services, more low-income people in King County will be able to find jobs.

The Basic Food Employment & Training program connects those receiving Basic Food assistance to education and job op-portunities.

RISE explores how to make the Basic Food Employment & Training program more ef-fective for special populations like those with limited English proficiency, the home-less and the long-term unemployed.

Washington is one of 10 states to receive the grant and King County is one of four counties participating in the pilot.

Kate Kaniaru, right, discusses employment options with Seema, a client. RISE, a new pilot program, is designed for people fac-ing multiple barriers to employment. Seema hopes to learn new job skills so she can become self-sufficient.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray visits with Henry, who overcame huge odds and ultimately found hous-ing for his family through our Shelter Diversion program.

Not a day goes by that Henry R. doesn’t thank his lucky stars he found help for his family through our Shelter Diversion Program. The 43-year-old former grocery store journeyman fought back tears when he shared his story during a recent visit from Seattle Mayor Ed Murray.

Working to find solutions for the intensifying homeless cri-sis, Mayor Murray visited with Neighborhood House staff and clients from our Housing Stability division.

Scared that his wife and five kids would be split up upon losing their home, Henry was connected to Neighborhood House where he received coaching, move-in assis-tance and employment support.

Statewide, $22 million is allocated for the three-year project.

Neighborhood House, along with FareStart, Seattle Goodwill and oth-ers, is providing wrap-around services to break down the barriers that have kept them out of the workforce, con-nect them to training and assist them in finding long-term employment.

The Basic Food Employment & Train-ing Program, in which Neighborhood House also participates, will act as the control group for the study.

We are excited to be part of this study that aims to improve services for underserved community members.

Seattle's 49th Mayor, Norm Rice, stops by Yesler to re-flect on its redevelopment, which he's been involved with for the past 10 years. Known as "Mayor Nice," he and his wife, Constance, have supported Neighbor-hood House for years. His first book, "The Soul of a Messenger," will be published this summer.

What do you like to do for fun?Jazz Alley is one of our favorite places in the city. I really do like classic jazz artists like Miles Davis.

What can you absolutely not live without?Aside from my family and grandkids, I love the rain.

What will your first book be about?Civic engagement and how to foster successful collaborations.

What do you think people would be surprised to know about you?In 1995, HBO named me "America's Funniest Mayor." I also made a cameo appearance on an episode of "Frasier" and still receive small residuals for reruns.

We would like to thank Vulcan Inc. and Vistex for sponsoring our 110th Anniversary Breakfast!Neighborhood Housemates
