Wipers are fitted to giant umbrellas in Medina

It’s every Muslim’s ambition, once in a lifetime, to visit theholy cities of Islam. At Hajj over 2 million people make thepilgrimage every year. With temperatures at Medinareaching 45°C/ 113°F and above, giant umbrellas are usedto protect pilgrims from the ill effects of sun and heat.

These high technology sunshades are operatedhydraulically, and German company Montanhydraulik hassupplied the hydraulic cylinders for these, which also formpart of the tall umbrella poles.

Both extreme temperaturesand sand storms put themotors to the test. To ensurethat media is excluded fromthe hydraulic mechanisms,DA27 wipers in NBR arefitted. These withstand theheat and are capable ofbridging a one-millimeter/0.04 inch gap in case ofmovement of the umbrella’spole.

Facts: Medina and the giant umbrellas

Medina [Al Madinah, Yathrib] is the second mostimportant holy city of Islam, the refuge ofMohammed after his flight from Mecca. It islocated in a well-watered oasis 180 km/ 110 mileseast of the Red Sea. The chief building there is thelarge mosque, which contains the tombs ofMohammed, his daughter Fatima and the CaliphOmar. When making the pilgrimage to the holy cityof Mecca, usually a visit to Medina is part of thetrip.

One of the splendors of the newly expandedProphet’s Mosque is the technology used forclimatic control in its large open courtyards thatare integral to the design of the mosque. Thisinvolves an innovative system of sliding domes andumbrellas that are deployed during the hot hoursof the day to contain the circulating chilled air andretracted during the cool hours to release the heat.

Each of the 12 mechanized retractable umbrellas, six in each of the courtyards, is 17 by 18 meters/ 56by 59 feet across and stands 17 meters/ 56 feethigh. The armatures extend to carry covers, whichtogether give shade to almost 300 square meters/359 square yards.

Automated assembly should be easy. When it comes to automaticinsertion of seals though, this is not always the case. Trelleborg SealingSolutions works with leading manufacturers of assembly equipment toensure it is as simple as possible. With them, we have developedmanufacturing and surface technologies to maximize manufacturingspeeds and minimize downtime, lowering overall production costs.

Pull itPush it

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has been working inpartnership with leading automated assembly equipmentmanufacturers such as Ohrmann Montagetechnik in Europeand AMARA in North America for several years. Ourobjective has been to maximize speed and quality whenseals are automatically assembled into components.

Seal developments focus on optimizingautomated insertion processes

As manufacturers demand ever-higher velocity and yield, this has made the automatic insertion of seals even moredifficult. Seal developments have focused on optimizingthe insertion process of seals to make production quickerand more effective, maximizing manufacturing speed andminimizing downtime to lower overall costs.

Firstly, to ensure effective mounting of seals in automatedassembly, seals must have sufficient elasticity and bedimensionally accurate. But successful insertion of seals is

not just about these being perfectly flat and round. Otherparameters must be considered when it comes to thedesign of the assembly machine itself and the technologybehind the seal.

The key factors makingautomated assembly workTrelleborg Sealing Solutions and automated assemblyequipment designers have concentrated machine and sealdevelopment on the following factors to achieve efficientseal mounting:

Detection systems installed on machines includingprobes, light barriers and back pressure controls toautomatically sense if seals are present

Closed assembly tools to avoid applying localstresses to seals during handling which can fracture ortear seals

Coating and surface treatmenttechnologies to optimize friction characteristics andto avoid contamination of handling and assemblyequipment

Specification of packaging, transport andstorage to DIN 7716 right up to point of assembly

Recommendation of sealing materials thathave sufficient resistance to chemicals and oils along withmechanical properties and slide behavior suited to theassembly process

Test programs solve specific automatedassembly issues

An example of the way we have cooperated withautomated assembly equipment manufacturers is in theidentification of the optimum surface treatment of sealsfor automated assembly. We worked together with them, undertaking numerous test programs to solve specificissues, including one regarding silicone coatings.

Seals are coated with silicone to improve lubrication, whichinitially gives excellent slide behavior. However, over timethe silicone dries, friction properties deteriorate and sealstend to stick during assembly.

Dry coating for O-Rings gives superiorlong term properties to silicone

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions undertook tests, which clearlydemonstrated this reduction in properties. They alsoestablished a coating that achieved similar friction

characteristics to the silicone coating when first applied.Being a dry surface treatment though, no lowering ofperformance was suffered over time. In addition, there wasno potential contamination of the assembly system fromthe coating coming off the seals, a tendency with silicone.

An automated assembly machine will handle thousands of O-Rings in an hour. A great deal of technology is behind makingsure that O-Rings move through the equipment effectively toprevent any stoppages.

The newly developed Turcon® Variseal® SA fromTrelleborg Sealing Solutions provides a PTFEbased sealing solution suitable for the solid sealglands preferred by aerospace engineers. Thisseal offers easy installation combined with hightemperature operation, chemical resistanceand low friction, making it suitable forhigh frequency aerospaceapplications such asflight controls.

Launching

Turcon® Variseal® SAfor aerospace applications

To house seals, aerospace engineersfavor use of a solid seal gland, asimple groove cut into componenthardware, to simplify installation.Slipper seals, which are compact indesign, can fit into these without aproblem.

Aerospace engineers favoruse of solid seal glands tosimplify seal installation

Turcon® Variseal®

is a preferred seal optionin aerospace applications

However, the spring-energizedTurcon® Variseal® is often a preferredseal option, because it has a numberof advantages in aerospaceapplications. Its jacket of Turcon®,the Trelleborg Sealing Solutionsproprietary PTFE based material,is capable of operating in extremesof temperature and is resistantto aggressive aerospace fluidssuch as synthetic hydrocarbon, petroleum base, phosphate esterand all types of aviation jet fuels.Turcon® also has a very lowcoefficient of fr ict ion, whichoptimizes sealing load, making itideal for the high frequency cyclingof aerospace primary flight controls.

Turcon® Variseal® SA has been specially designedfor solid seal glands

During installation into a solid sealgland, seals need to be compressedsubstantial ly. Due to the l ipconfiguration of the Turcon® Variseal®,the spring energizer within it tends toflare its jacket outwards. This makesinstallation of Turcon® Variseal® verydifficult without a split seal gland, especial ly in smaller diameterhousings. The problem is solved withTurcon® Variseal® SA, which isspecially designed for closed glands.

One step closer to a manned space mission

India’s ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) recently moved a stepfurther in realizing its plan of a reusable launch vehicle, which will havea rocket take-off, place a satellite in orbit and land like an aircraft. Thismeans India is now closer to the challenge of launching a manned spacemission, tentatively set for 2014.

When the space capsule recovery experiment launched into space onJanuary 10, 2007 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Project DirectorA. Subramoniam told The Times of India, “The mission was extremelysuccessful and operated as per the design specifications.”

The prime objective of India’s revered national icon ISRO is to developspace technology and its applications to various national tasks.

Seals play a crucial role in space applications

Sealing solutions play a crucial role in any space application. In 1999,when ISRO had supply problems with the perfluoroelastomers it wasusing, it approached Trelleborg Sealing Solutions in India. “We moved inspeedily to supply the material used by the organization,” says S.N.Ravishankar, General Sales Manager, Aerospace & Defense for TrelleborgSealing Solutions India.

The next challenge was to have ISRO try Isolast®, the Trelleborg SealingSolutions range of perfluoroelastomer materials. “It was not an easytask. They had been using another product for more than 20 years, andthey were reluctant to switch,” says Bony Paul, General Manager ofTrelleborg Sealing Solutions India.

Isolast® perfluoroelastomers became the preferredchoice

Samples were provided for initial tests and it took three years to get thefirst inquiry from ISRO. The product was new to the organization andhad to be proven through rigorous testing. However, the tests

Page 12: in the groove - Trelleborg · Seal developments focus on optimizing ... issues, including one regarding silicone coatings. Seals are coated with silicone to improve lubrication, which

proceeded smoothly and ISRO started procuring Isolast®.“Now their entire requirement of sealing solutions hasbeen transferred to us,” Paul says, delighted at serving“such a prestigious client, which automatically gives youa good name in the aerospace market.”

Explaining the technical challenges and the crucial role ofsealing material in space applications, Ravishankar saysthat space vehicles use both solid and liquid propellantsas fuel, along with highly oxidized media in their engines, booster pumps, etc., and the elastomer is crucial in suchapplications.

Where other elastomers fail, Isolast® issuccessful

Isolast® can deliver the goods where conventionalelastomers fail, as it is compatible with the specialchemicals and high temperatures in space applications. This is because it is virtually inert. Its long shelf life (20years) and low compression set are other advantages.Business with ISRO began with a minor order, but

increased substantially in 2005. Trelleborg SealingSolutions managers are excited about the futurepotential. “From 1988 till now, ISRO had only 26 spaceprograms; from 2006–08 it will have more than 20,compressing two decades into three years,” saysRavishankar.

Building a partnership with globalsupport

Paul adds that with support from the parent company inGermany and manufacturing facilities in the UK, he hasbeen able to maintain a smooth supply chain to ISRO.Even the challenge of conducting tests for a sensitive andhigh-security customer like ISRO can be overcome.“Thanks to our good relationship, they conducted thetests on their campus on our behalf,” he says.

Paul thinks that with a breakthrough in the space sectorin Asia and an esteemed customer like ISRO satisfied withTrelleborg Sealing Solutions products, “our group canbuild on this experience and other successes, particularlyin the US, to support space programs across the world.”

In 1975, Russia launched Aryabhatta, the firstIndian satellite. Come 2008, ISRO is scheduledto send Chandrayaan-1, India’s first unmannedmission to the Moon. If successful, it will bethe sixth global agency to do so. In November2006, at ISRO headquarters in Bangalore, 80senior Indian scientists discussed thetechnological challenges of a manned spacemission; the consensus was that ISRO has “thematurity” for such a task.

Set up under the Department of Science, ISROexecutes space programs with the mainobjective of developing satellites, launchvehicles, sounding rockets and associatedground systems. It has achieved severalimportant milestones, the latest being thesuccessful launch of INSAT-4A, by Ariane, andISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C6,both in 2005.

ISRO has extensive international cooperationwith countries and organizations such as theEuropean Space Agency, Canada, China,Sweden, Norway, France, Germany andIndonesia. With its mission to “develop spacetechnology and its applications to variousnational tasks,” ISRO has established twomajor space systems, INSAT for

communication, television broadcasting andmeteorological services, and Indian RemoteSensing Satellites (IRS) system for resourcemonitoring and management. It has alsodeveloped two satellite launch vehicles, PSLVand GSLV, to place INSAT and IRS satellites inthe required orbits.

For 2008, ISRO has several projects in thepipeline, including the prestigiousChandrayaan-1.

“From 1988 till now, ISRO had only 26 spaceprograms; from 2006 – 08it will have more than 20,compressing two decadesinto three years.”

S.N. Ravishankar, General Sales Manager, Aerospace &Defence, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, India.

Aiming for the skies

Isolast® is the Trelleborg Sealing Solutions range of high specificationperfluoroelastomer (FFKM) compounds. These are terpolymers ofmonomers in which all hydrogen atoms have been replaced byfluorine. The absence of hydrogen in the molecular chaindramatically increases both their chemical and thermal resistance. The cross-linked molecular chains enable them to combine theresilience and sealing force of an elastomer with the chemicalinertness and thermal stability of PTFE.

Isolast® was capable of meeting demanding ISRO requirements.Virtually inert, Isolast® materials perform well in a broad range ofchemical media including organic and inorganic oxides, acids, alkalis, amines, esters and steam at continuous operating temperatures from-25°C/-13°F to 325°C/617°F.

“As ISRO uses chemicals that are highly oxidizing and fuels that arenot easily compatible with conventional rubbers used for sealing,Isolast® was the perfect solution for them,” says S.N. Ravishankar,General Sales Manager, Aerospace and Defense for TrelleborgSealing Solutions India.

The relationship between TrelleborgSealing Solutions and Spirit hasbeen long-term

Long and trusting relationships are important inany industry, but all the more so in the aerospacesector, where companies and people traditionallywork together on contracts that last for many, many years.

So while the partnership between Spirit Europeand Trelleborg Sealing Solutions might appearquite new on the surface, its roots go back decades.

Jim Martin, Senior Procurement Engineer with SpiritEurope, part of the world’s largest independentsupplier of commercial aerostructures and systemsexplains, “Spirit only came into being in 2005 when theinvestment firm Onex acquired Boeing’s manufacturingfacilities in Oklahoma and Kansas. Spirit Europe is evennewer, arising from the acquisition of BAE’s Aerostructuresbusiness in April 2006. Despite that newness, I’m stillspeaking to the same people I did when I first joined theindustry 18 years ago.”

Partnerships ensure better products, quicker turnaround time and serviceablecomponents

Martin, who regards Spirit’s work with Trelleborg SealingSolutions as a genuine partnership, expects their joint focuson the exacting demands of the aircraft industry today andfor the future to stand both companies in good stead. In

themeantime, each aircraftundergoes regularchecks and services, whichcreates demands for parts that must be delivered on timeand from a conveniently-placed source.

“Trelleborg Sealing Solutions supplies a whole host of sealsfor our aircraft wings for Airbus, especially the A320 family. We need our partners to be looking at new technology, weight, noise, new materials and of course cost reduction.

14

Spiritin the Sky

New products in the aerospace industrydo not appear quickly - and when theydo, they must be tested stringently andtrusted implicitly because they will affectmanufacturing for decades, rather thanyears. That’s the situation with aTrelleborg Sealing Solutions polymerwing seal supplied to Spirit Europe.

Page 15: in the groove - Trelleborg · Seal developments focus on optimizing ... issues, including one regarding silicone coatings. Seals are coated with silicone to improve lubrication, which

15

Seals ease the airflow

The function of an airframe seal on the trailingedge of a wing is to ease airflow. The TrelleborgSealing Solutions polymer version of a previous, highly specialized leather flaptrack faring sealwas developed for the Airbus A320 family, representing half of the world’s single-aislepassenger aircraft. Trelleborg Sealing Solutions

will supply 370 such aircraft kits this year.

“We are very much integrated into thesupply chain”

In a consolidating industry, suppliers must secure theirpositions by working higherup the supply chain, creatingadded value for products andservices, and embeddingthemselves with customers.

“We have been a trustedname in the aerospacebusiness for the last 60 yearsand the work with SpiritEurope epitomizes the wayforward,” says Stuart Campton, Sales Director Aerospacefor Trelleborg Sealing Solutions UK. “Trelleborg supplieshundreds of seals used in airframes, including dozens foraircraft wings.”

Supplying whole systems

“Today the goal is to supply systems, rather than just acommodity, and greater integration of the supply chain,”he explains. “We supply finished seals. A few years ago, weintroduced kitting for wing seals – previously lengths ofseal section had to be cut and bonded. Now seals can bepicked off the media board and placed in the aircraftcomponent. The board is reusable. That has put us into apartnership position, so we are very much integrated intothe supply chain.”

We want products that arerecyclable and reusable. We need better products, quicker turnaround time andserviceable components.”

Suppliers are notalways chosen onprice; service, delivery andperformance are

important too

“These relationships are built overa long time. The aerospace industry

is consolidating, and we need to buildpartnerships in which everyone

continues developing and growing. It’snot always about price; it’s also about

services, delivery and performance. TrelleborgSealing Solutions has been good on all three for

years.”

Martin says the polymer wing seal developed byTrelleborg Sealing Solutions to replace a leather versionis a good example of the partnership principle. “This wasa case of a bright idea becoming a best practice.Everything that is done in the aircraft industry is long-term. Any new technology investment doesn’t generatebenefits in a year or two, but more likely seven or eightyears or more.”

Working towards environmentalimprovements

Since the Advisory Council for Aeronautical Researchin Europe (ACARE) published its Strategic ResearchAgenda in 2002, the industry has been workingtowards major environmental improvements. By2015, aircraft need to be 20 percent more efficientin terms of fuel consumption and 50 percent moreefficient in terms of noise. These requirements

will create new demands for aircraft, including the next generation

Airbus A350 XWB – more than60 percent of its airframe will

be made from newmaterials.

Weeke - A story of successPart of the Homag Group, Weeke, based in Herzebrock-Clarholtz, Germany, develops and manufactures highquality machinery for the woodworking industry andcarpentry. Founded over 60 years ago, it was responsiblefor the first lock insertion machine in 1954, whichrevolutionized wood processing. Innovation is a key partof their philosophy, and in partnership with theircustomers they solve woodworking challenges, making themost effective woodworking equipment possible.

Zurcon® QUAD-RING® met all operatingcriteria and enhanced performance

The solution proposed by Trelleborg Sealing Solutions wasto replace the NBR seals with a QUAD-RING® in Zurcon®

Z90, one of our proprietary polyurethane materialsspecially developed for sealing applications. Its excellentfriction characteristics prevented sticking to the housing, even after extended periods of rest, while its hightemperature capability means it easily withstoodoperating conditions.

“We are happy with the sealing solution,” says Peter. “Notonly have we prevented sticking to the cylinder but alsoeliminated wear due to friction. An added benefit of theimproved friction characteristics has been that thejackscrews now only reach temperatures of 60°C/ 140 °F.This is contributing to the overall better performance ofthe power train.”

electronic program control, enabling completeconstruction of a furniture component without a toolchange. Secondly, we wanted an alternative to the usualmethod of positioning the jackscrew drills. Traditionallythese are positioned using pressure from pneumaticcylinders, but we wanted to incorporate a mechanical

locking device as well.”

Existing seals were not effective in high temperatures

The resulting solution is a drill power trainwhere up to 40 jackscrew drills can becontrolled individually. CNC control enablesintegrated cylinders within each jackscrew tobe lowered, automatically locked, lifted, reposit ioned and locked again, inprogrammed sequences, as many times asrequired, until the furniture component iscomplete.

To allow the drill to work within a grid of only30 mm/ 1.2 inches, the jackscrews needed to

have a small circumference. To achieve therequired load ratings, several ring-grooved ball

bearings were positioned together within thejackscrews. This caused them to heat up to 80°C/

176°F. In these operating conditions the existing NBRseals were sticking to their housings, especially after

periods of rest. Potentially this could lead to thejackscrews being damaged and consequential downtime

for the machines. Lubrication was not an option to preventthis, as this media caused the NBR material to harden andbecome brittle.

NanotechnologyMartin Magnusson is LiaisonScientist at the NanometerConsortium, University of Lundin Sweden. He serves as a linkbetween research and thebusiness sector.

Through the relatively newnanotechnology, the future is alreadyhere. The possibility at atom level ofmixing physics, chemistry and biologyto produce new materials withcustomized properties opens the wayfor highly innovative products andapplications in a number of areas.

Nanoscience has become perhaps themost prominent area in research and,in the long term, nanotechnologycould become the hub of a newindustrial revolution. But what isnanotechnology?

In the new, advanced nanolaboratoryat the Lund Institute of Technology,Martin Magnusson serves as a linkbetween research and the businesssector at the interdiscipl inaryNanometer Consortium.

“Nanotechnology is used tomanufacture articles on the scale of1–100 nanometers and to make use ofthese structures. Nanoscience is aboutthe aspects that are specific to suchsmall systems and what can be donewith the help of nanotechnology,” hesays. The central feature of nano-science is that a material’s propertiesare changed at nano level.

For physicists, this phenomenonmeans that a new type of physicsoccurs; chemists can achieve moreaccurate measurements and createnew structures. In biomedicine, it ispossible to measure individualmolecules, and materials scientists cancreate new materials.

“For example, gold has certainmaterial properties. But if you take asingle gold atom, it has none of these,

except perhaps the density. At nanolevel, it is also possible to mixmaterials in a way that would beimpossible if they were bigger. Thisfacilitates the creation of new, exciting composite materials.”

There are already a number ofproducts based on nanotechnology:car t ires with superior wearproperties, stainless textiles andultra-thin surgical needles. The self-cleaning windows are also reality, but we will probably need to waitfor NASA’s nanovision of using ultra-thin, extremely strong wires to takean elevator straight out into space –although it is already possible intheory.

“The area is usually divided accord-ing to application: electronics, medicine and material. We are

Page 26: in the groove - Trelleborg · Seal developments focus on optimizing ... issues, including one regarding silicone coatings. Seals are coated with silicone to improve lubrication, which

26

becoming increasingly effective atcreating material with morecontrolled properties. They canbecome stronger, lighter, conductheat better or less well… Whateverit is we want them to do,” saysMagnusson.

Using nanotechnology, a manufacturerhas succeeded in producing asynthetic rubber that has improvedheat resistance, elasticity andflexibility. With nano-size particles, itis even possible to reinforce siliconerubber so that it becomes bothtransparent and robust.

“One of the most exciting features iscombination solutions that involvemixing active elements and sensorsfrom biology and physics in materialsscience. There has been success increating air-cleaning and self-washingconcrete, and work is being conductedon self-repairing plastics. By nano-structuring surfaces, attempts are alsobeing made to make them self-sealingso that no packing is needed,” saysMagnusson.

Slowly but surely, researchers aredeveloping nanotechnology, but themass-production of nanostructureswith sufficient precision remains thestuff of science fiction. The integralcomplexity of the technology meansthat costs become too high.

“It will be some time before it takes18 months from the research lab toindustry earning money on a solution. But there is plenty that can be done, and companies have to tel l usresearchers what they need. Thereis nothing we want more than tocooperate with industry,” saysMagnusson.

Quantum leap

A key focus for nanotechnology isthe quest to produce the quantumcomputer. Following the laws ofquantum physics, the quantumcomputer would have enormousprocessing power through theability to be in multiple statesand to perform tasks using allpossible permutations simultaneously.Nanotechnology is a key element tomaking this dream a reality.

The init ial implementation ofnanotechnology will help make chipsthat are smaller, faster and morepowerful. It is estimated that by2015 the spend on nanotechnology-based applications will be major inthe semiconductor industry withinvestment in developmentsincreasing year on year.

NanotechnologyDevelopments innanotechnology:The 90 nm node is already in production, and the industry is workingtoward 63 nm.

In lasers quantum wells are to be substituted with quantum dotsproduced from nanometer-sized crystalline particles.

Nanowire technology will allow the pushing of electrons into eversmaller spaces.

Films are in development made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) andnanoparticles to help make chips smaller and faster.

Spintronic theory has led to nanoscale devices that increase readhead sensitivity of a hard disk drive, significantly expanding storagecapacity.

Self assembly on hard disks is resulting in higher percentage particlealignment, giving greater magnetism and more storage in the samespace.

Nanoimprint lithography is moving from the 32 nm mode to 1 nmdimensions.

A millionth of amillimeter

Within nanotechnology, researcherswork with individual atoms, making itpossible to move atoms, create newmaterials and change the properties ofexisting materials. An atom is about 0. 2nanometers in diameter and you getone nanometer if you divide onemill imeter a mil l ion times. Onenanometer has the same size in relationto a tennis ball as the tennis ball has toa globe.

The name nanotechnology was firstused in the 1970s. A breakthrough wasachieved in 1981 with the invention ofthe scanning tunnel microscope, whichmeant that it was possible for the firsttime to see the surface of atoms and toactually touch individual atoms.

Sealing - the future - with nanotechnology“As our customers’ equipment moves into the nano-dimension sowill our sealing products,” says Elke Voehringer-Klein, EuropeanSemiconductor Segment Manager. “Certainly sealing in thesemicrostructures will present new and possibly yet unknownchallenges. We expect our sealing materials will have to embracenanotechnology too.

“Research and development is increasingly being devoted to thedevelopment of the ultimate that can be accomplished fromnanotechnology: the intelligent seal. In the meantime we areseeing, in response to demands from the semiconductor market, focus on material fillers based on nanotechnology principles. These organic compounds offer increased resistance tochlorinated and fluorinated gases, high temperatures and harshprocess chemicals while lowering particulation.”
