Role of Rabbi Turned Down By Van Heflin

NEW YORK, April 26—Van Heflin who was aboard the jet which brought me to New York told me he'd turned down the role of a xabbl on Playhouse 90s last show of the season; didn't think he had the face for it. Now Charles Laughton is doing it.

Van and his wife are shopping for an island at Nassau. They love sailing and have been in the market for one, but found our Balboa Island property too expensive now. Van tells me the Dick Powells paid a quarter of a million for their Balboa pad.

Just had time to change clothes, greet Jerome Zerbe and we were off to see the screamingly funny "Bye Bye Birdie."

LIVELY SATIRE — This murderous satire on Elvis Presley will only endear him to his loyal followers. It features the freshest, liveliest kids since "West Side Story," and Gower Champion keeps them moving as though they'd had a shot of atomic energy. Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke are the stars; the latter reminds me a lot of Fred Astaire, both in looks and fast footwork.

ON THE PARTY ROUND— At the Arthur Hays Sulzberger party at the New York Times, Mrs. Sulzberger in gray satin received with her lovely family. There also was my boss Dick Clarke with his brilliant wife and my pals the Bob McLeans of Philadelphia.

Otis Chandler had a receiving line of his own being congratulated on all sides for his appointment to publisher's post of the Los Angeles Times while father Norman stood proudly by. The Joe Know-lands had their son Bill along. Asked him when he's returning to politics. He said: "Have no time since I'm running a newspaper." But we sure need him.

INVITATION — When Al Levy dropped in for a chat, Dave Susskind, his partner in Talent Associates, called to ask if I'd come on his open end show next Sunday. It's a 2^-hour talk fest. All women. I'm sorely tempted but haven't yet said yes\ If I do it means j I'll miss Vincent Price's dinner celebrating his 25th year on stage. Red Motley's an

nual wingding was cocktails and a buffet supper at the Waldorfs Starlight *oof.

WINNER'S CIRCLE—Took in the American T h e a t e r Wing's Tony Award dinner at the Astor Hotel. Helen Menken, president, has devoted all her adult life to this project At h e r t a b l e were Helen Hayes, Lauren Bacall, Daniel Blum and John D. Rockefeller III. He's the shy member of the clan, who is doing a magnificent job for the new Lincoln Center w h e r e they're building an opera house, concert hall and theater.

NOT DOOLEY FAN—Quite a going over Life gave Dr. Tom Dooley. He's collected an awful lot of money from the American people for his projects in Viet Nam.

I met him several times and was not too fnchanted. He right away t h o u g h t I should pry a projection machine and some aew films out of Walt Disney. I told him that wasn't the way to keep friends.
