Volunteer Silver Bells Pauline Albers, Marilyn Athmer and Karen Lager, along with (hidden) Gloria Baro and colleague Mary Scott, join Director of Volunteers Judy Schrage (top) and drivers Don Hostmeyer and Stan Albers in ringing in the holiday season during the Breese Chamber of Commerce Lighted Christmas Parade and Fireworks on Saturday, Nov 28. Dr. Chris and Lisa Rivera’s Nativity on display Dec 4–6 at ChiaraA lovely Fontanini Nativity set owned by Dr. Chris and Lisa Rivera of Carlyle will be the St. Joseph’s Breese entry for this year’s Franciscan Nativity Festival at the Chiara Center in Springfield.

With more than 100 international Nativity sets and tours of St. Francis of Assisi Church, the festival is open from 2–7pm Friday, Dec 4, and from noon–4pm Saturday and Sunday, Dec 5–6. The event is free; groups are welcome.

The Chiara Center is on the campus of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, sponsor of Hospital Sisters Health System and 14 Illinois and Wisconsin hospitals, including HSHS St. Joseph’s Breese.

Dr. Chris Rivera, son of long-time area surgeon Dr. and Mrs. Renato Rivera of Breese, said the original grouping was a wedding gift that the family has added to over the years. It now totals 16 pieces including the Holy Family, Wise men and animals.

“We set it out every year at Christmas and the kids have always played with the figures,” Dr. Chris Rivera said.

“When our youngest daughter was around six, she was scared to sleep in her own bed by herself and we gave her the baby Jesus figure to sleep with,” he said. “She slept with baby Jesus by her pillow for several months that year.”

The Nativity Festival serves to educate

people about the tradition of the Christmas crib that dates back to St. Francis of Assisi.

“St. Francis believed that Christmas was the dearest of feasts because it meant that God was now one of us — flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone,” said a Chiara Center spokesperson.

“He prepared a manger, lead in an ox and ass and called together the men and women of Greccio, Italy. At midnight on Christmas Eve, candles and torches, faith and love, lit up the night as Greccio became a new Bethlehem — the animals and people recognizing in their midst God becoming Flesh.”

The Chiara Center is at 4875 LaVerna Rd in Springfield. For information, visit www.chiaracenter.org or call 217-523-0901.

This Fontanini Nativity owned by Dr. Chris and Lisa Rivera will represent HSHS St. Joseph’s Breese this year at the Franciscan Nativity Festival at the Chiara Center in Springfield.

Free blood pressure checks Dec 8 in ER Triage areaFree blood pressure checks will be available from 8 to 9am Tuesday, Dec 8, in the Emergency Room triage area (ring buzzer). This is the final check for 2015.Screenings, such as these offered each month at the hospital and at the spring and fall health fairs, help identify potential problems or monitor existing situations. According to the American Heart Association, the higher the blood pressure, the greater the chance of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and kidney disease. Early identification can prompt lifestyle changes and focused treatment options resulting in less cardiovascular and kidney disease later in life.At one time, readings in the 140/90 range were acceptable but now, those with a reading of 120 to 139 over 80 to 89 are considered pre-hypertensive, at higher risk and more likely to require medication.

New St. Elizabeth’s update

Construction of the new HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is visible if you look to the East between exits 14 and 16 of Interstate 64.

Lunch pavilion at colleague entrance is blessed

The new pavilion was blessed and the builders were thanked during a Nov 24 ceremony outside the East colleague entrance. Among those in attendance were Director of Volunteers Judy Schrage; volunteer builders Stan Albers, Betsy & Dennis (Fuzzy) Kampwerth, and Dave Athmer; CEO Paulette Evans; and Chaplains Sister Joan Markus, Deacon Rich Bagby, and Pastor Carl Johnston.
