The heart is a symbol of the whole person, the seat of the emotional life. People are ‘good-hearted’. Jesus is critical of those who are externally virtuous but do not have their hearts in the right place. The heart is also the symbol of love. Truly loving others and living for them is an act from the heart.

Augustine’s Feast, 2015. Dear Fellow Parishioners, Some years ago I was asked to give a series of radio talks on the topic of “An Augustinian Approach to Contemplation” and, having spent months agonising over the script, we actually recorded it in just half a day. In one of the early episodes I paused in my commentary to explain how central St. Augustine was to my life and after I finished that segment the Sound Engineer who was guiding me through it all made the observation

“When you said Augustine was your hero, you really meant it!” I still do, which is why we are celebrating his Feast Day this weekend instead of the usual Ordinary Sunday liturgy. In the Rule which St. Augustine left for those who were with him in the monastery, (but which applied equally well to his parishioners when he became a Bishop), he makes the central point that the more each one is concerned for the interests of the community rather than putting their own interests first, the greater progress they are making in their capacity to love. This is expressed by living out our lives as a community of friends who show hospitality to all comers. Some commentators see the Augustinian model of communal spirituality as the answer to many problems of this Post-modern Century such as alienation, individualism, consumerism and fragmentation of family life (to name a few). Augustine offers instead the possibility of a hospitable space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy. Rather than trying to dominate we offer a space where people are encouraged to disarm themselves and listen with attention and care to the voices speaking in their own centre because they sense that is where we have found our own security. There are many individual things that Augustine wrote that have touched me deeply. Some are as simple as his great belief that living in communities is obviously better than living a hermit’s life! Another is that through friendships and relationships with other people we can become close to God; in fact, love of God and love of the other amounts to one and the same thing. At this time when so many people live in their own small apartments and become lost in a large city like Sydney, we need to feel connected more than ever, as people and as a nation and as a Church. We cannot force anyone to such a personal and intimate change of heart, but we can offer an hospitable space where such a change can take place.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

‘The doctrines they teach are only human regulations’ Mark 7:7

At school: How can I remember what Jesus taught us and act like Jesus?

At work or study: Where do I find wisdom...in Jesus’ words or on talk-back radio

In my family life: How do we deal with pressures to be “with it” or “in fashion”?

Prayer this week God, in Jesus you have taught us what is important, to love

with sincerity and to live simply.

From St. Augustine

My God, let me be thankful as I

remember and acknowledge all Your

mercies.

Confessions 8, 1

Next week instead of sending out the September copy of In Touch, we will be emailing the parish report that was presented to our annual parish assembly on Sunday August 2. The parish assembly is a chance to hear reports by various groups involved in the running of the parish and elect new members of Parish Pastoral Council. Also attached will be Fr Paul’s summary of the meeting. We will not be

sending copies out through the mail. If you don’t receive In Touch via email and wish to receive a copy of the annual report please contact the office and we will post a copy to you.
