Elephant Dies;A baby elephant died at the

Portland (Ore.) Zoo 18 days af-ter it was born unexpectedly. The baby reportedly died ofpneumonia, brought on by a lackof Vitamin E.

Called "Surprise" because ofits sudden arrival, the babywas born to "Hanako" who wasreturned to Portland a few daysbefore, after being on loan tothe Los Angeles Zoo.

Zoo vet Dr. Michael Schmidtand his wife, Anne, kept a 24hour watch on the baby in anattempt to save it. The babywas suffering from debilitatingwhite muscle disease and thenwent into pneumonia. The di-sease was apparently caused bya lack of vitamin E during thegestation period.

BILLY BARTON-I'VE JUST DISCOVERED there must be enough magicians

in the U. S. to populate the state of Texas. (Next, comesjugglers!). At least as many as would fill Rhode Island'showed up recently to visit PHILIP MORRIS.

Speaking of magicians RAY OR-SZAK (Signer Rai) doubled inbrass by announcing the RoyalHanneford Circus on its recentswing of one-dayers....It tookthe ENTIRE Wallenda clan to shipCarla and her sway pole off toPuerto Rico at the last minute....but, that's nothing newt ittakes that many just to send Car-la across the street.

"Little" MARIO WALLENDA(There are TWO, y'know) hitcheda ride to Florida with EDDY VEN-TURA, home to Grandma Helen'sgood cooking and then to DUBSKYSCircus. VENTURA played the Orlan-do date for JOE BAUER.

SID KELLNER reports he issplitting his season into twosegments, has some excellent pro-mos set. He won't commit himselfabout the TOM MIX film, but ad-mits the author is going eastwith the show. About that "in-come tax" rumor, he just laughs."I have a lot of problems, butthat isn't one of them."

Took time to watch the FLY-ING MARILEES on the BILLY SMARTChildren's TV Circus Special. It's a double-wide flying actwith two male catchers, two maleleapers and three girl flyers.

Caught shots of Mary (Atterbury)on the pedestal and she stilllooks great!....GUS & URSULA'Sson, Don, is out of the hospitaland back in Action I'm toldthat DOREY MILLER is "unhappy"with his recent shipment of ele-phants .

I predict that a major under-taking involving a lot of bigtalent is headed for a lot ofbig trouble and I HOPE my predic-tion is wrong.

The story that ALFREDO LANDONand wife BOYON have returnedpermanently to Argentina is notso. He IS building a house thereand PLANS to leave later....butright now Alfredo is still tend-ing bar at the Showfolks in Sar-asota.

GEORGE HUBLER reports he hasthe Lexington Shrine date thissummer. For the past severalseasons it has been produced byCLYDE BROS. Originally it was aPolack date, later played byHarold Voise, and then by SamPolack.

A super powerhouse line-upsparks the Hybler YoungstownGrotto Circus, on this week.
