Starting this season, you have probably noticed theubiquious M art maps appearing everywhere in

New York — Downtown, Uptown, Chelsea. Totalling45,000 bi-monthly copies and distributed to the city’smajor art districts and top hotels, they’re hard to miss.

As the original M magazine has evolved over theyears, from a local art guide into a highly regardedart journal with increasing international content, gallery owners and art patrons have expressed theneed for a simple guide that visitors can pick up ingalleries and hotels and walk around with, take noteson, stick in their pocket.

Indeed, this was the premise of M from its inceptionin 1998, when we were the first art publication toherald the importance of what was then an emergingart district called Chelsea.

Our listings policy is simple: We print the name (notjust the reference number) of important galleries andart institutions directly on our easy-to-use neighborhoodart map for free. For our member galleries, in additionto the map placement, we provide complete listings inprint and on our easy to remember website:i n t heA rtworld.com

There is no charge for galleries to list online with M,but to maintain quality listings, membership is byinvitation only.

But of course you don’t have to be a gallery ownerto access of the most up-to-date gallery listings ever.Have a great summer season.

Clifford RossSonnabend Gallery, New York

By Camille Hong Xin

In Richard Holmes's biography The Age of Won-der, a group of men and women in the late 18thand early 19th centuries, some of whom were mu-sicians or poets, believed the world was full of mir-acles that could be detected if only they lookedharder and experimented more. Eventually their dis-coveries and inventions gave birth to the RomanticAge of Science. Once again we are on the brinkof an age like this, when art and science are closelyinterwoven. The process of art-making has becomejust as innovative and fascinating as the art itself. This is the case with artist and inventor CliffordRoss’s work.

In this photography show, Landscape to Imagination,Ross obsessively deconstructs and reconstructs hismountain photographs, producing a remarkableseries of work that merges technical innovationand fine art in the spirit of The Age of Wonder. Hebreaks the boundary between these two normallyseparate vocations, bringing scientific inspirationinto his art, and a poetic sensibility into his in-vention. In 2001, when he was not satisfied withphotographs that he took of Mount Sopris in Col-orado with a 4x5 view camera, he began exper-imenting. For the next ten years, along with histeam, Ross invented a high resolution R1 camerasystem that uses military aerial film and a uniquedigital post-production technology, an R2 high-res-olution 360 degree digital video array, and i3Cyclorama. It is with his R1 camera system andre-programmed animation software that Rosscreated the work in this show.

The exhibition traces Ross’s creative process, start-ing from an extremely high resolution large scalephotograph, Mountain XIII, as the original imagefor his digitally manipulated collages, MountainRedux. This abstract work serves as the technicalbase for and conceptual interpretation of the ex-hibition’s centerpiece, an animated short video in-stallation, Harmonium Mountain, with an originalscore by the composer Philip Glass. The short filmwas an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festi-val this year. In a manner of speaking, Ross’s workbegins with a realistic meditation, emerges as anabstract musical, and progresses to a visualcarnival.

Andre Gide is quoted in an interview with DavidSalle, “do not understand me too quickly”. To besure, this probably speaks for most artists. Hencethe viewers are encouraged here to look harderand investigate the process behind Ross’s work.Unlike most photographs, the closer you look atMountain XIII (75 x 130 inches), the clearer thedetails appear. You not only see the wood grainson barn shingles two miles away, or tiny footpathsin distant mountains, but you also see the gentle-ness and transparency of the illuminating mist atthe far end of the water. It took Ross and his teamone year to build the RI camera, but in order torecreate the atmosphere as faithful as what he ex-perienced in the actual mountain, he spent morethan three years laboriously fine-tuning and bal-ancing color, hue and contrast on his fourteenMountain photos. As a result, the hyper-realisticimage captured by the lens and the impression ofthe nature left in the artist’s memory appear as onein the same photograph.

With a background as an abstract painter — eventhough he was obsessed with extreme realism —in 2006 Ross returned to rendering abstract inter-pretations of his emotional and spiritual responseto the landscape. Inspired by the paper negativesof the Taj Mahal by Mid-19th century British pho-tographer John Murray, Ross went on to create aseries of more abstract collages, Mountain Redux, that began with the negative of the mountains. There is something soulful in a paper negative. In-deed, back when the camera was first invented, people were afraid that this strange box actuallystole their souls. However, most prints today losethis feeling in the development. When Rossdrained the color from his photograph, it seemsas if this elusive soul finally emerged, and with apoetic truth and newfound emotional force.

The process behind Ross’s works is akin to that ofa master clockmaker taking apart one clock to cre-ate a series of new clocks. Inspired by “the worldin a grain of sand” in William Blake’s poem,

Auguries of Innocence, Ross takes one small sec-tion from the negative of Mountain XIII as his visuallanguage, “harmonium,” and infuses it with richcolors. With these vivid harmoniums he conductsa dazzling concerto of an abstract Mount Soprisagainst the negative of the landscape until it fadesto pure gray. And finally on the last piece, Har-monium Blizzard, he turns the concerto to a cli-mactic symphony. Ross printed this series onhand-made Japanese paper, similar to the 19thcentury handmade paper that Murray used. Theway the ink soaks into the paper reveals a gentleand enduring emotion while the ancient stillnessseizes upon a split moment from the computerizedfast-changing expression. In doing so, Ross com-bines the elements from early photography andEastern ink painting with the most advanced tech-nical innovations of today.

At last, Ross’s video installation Harmonium Moun-tain mobilizes the essentially immobile Mount Sopris.Following the artist’s experimental journey, the shortfilm seems to be as much a narrative story of hiscreative progression as an abstract animation. Thecolorful harmonium panels dance, melt, shape andreshape across the startlingly dark or brightly litnegative of the landscape on the screen. The con-trast is both celebratory and dreamlike. Whilesome artists pursue a theme or subject horizontally,Ross works vertically. Instead of traveling aroundthe world shooting more mountains, he experimentswith only one, utilizing different art forms, means ofexpression, medium and material.

Cezanne did more than sixty paintings of Mont St.Victoire. His relentless exploration in that process, with its emotional balance between abstractionand the real world, are many artists’ touchstones.Ross’s obsession here suggests Cezanne’s influ-ence on his pixilated, broken-apart attempts atpainting Mount Sopris with his own invented mod-ern tools; but even as such, apparently it’s only thebeginning of what this artist plans to do with hismountain. M

Qin FengEthan Cohen Fine Arts , New York

By Chiara Di Lello

This show, Desire Landscape, presents the workof Chinese abstract painter Qin Feng in a series

replete with nuanced forms and powerful expres-sions. The exhibition includes works on canvas aswell as paper, mixed media compositions, and onelarge piece consisting of over two dozen paintedfans. The artist’s thorough engagement with bothtraditional Chinese and abstract expressionist art isevident throughout these works.

Feng often focuses on rearranging the composi-tional elements of a traditional scroll painting. Inthe largest canvas here, a series of delicatelypainted plateaus at the top of the canvas dropaway as if into a canyon or basin, while the bot-tom edge is covered in calligraphic writing that isso layered and gestural as to suggest Chinesecharacters and Arabic letters. These elements arepushed to the edge, while the center of the canvasis dominated by a thick, sinuous black line thatwas apparently painted with a mop. The choice ofpainting utensil, and the use of ink together withpaint, calls attention to the relationship betweenwriting and painting, a relationship explored inseveral pieces in the show.

Another trio of works on paper presents intriguinginteractions between “classical” and contempo-rary brushwork. Here a tranquil stretch of water isinterrupted by a thick expressionist ink line; andcragged mountains are literally upended andhang down from the top of the paper, above asingle circular brushstroke. The circular brushstrokeis significant as a sign of Feng’s engagement withZen philosophy. Painting circles in ink is a form ofZen meditative practice, which the artist puts to adifferent purpose in this work. His circle encloseswhat appears to be a stretch of water, rendered intraditional brush strokes, suggesting an interrup-tion of tradition; but it is unclear whether this is anintentional effort. In seeking enlightenment, Zenpractitioners seek to transcend attachment to, ordesire for, the material world. One wonders thenwhether the title, Desire Landscapes, represents acatalogue of what obstacles remain, or an effortto turn the tables and focus on those desires, thereby flying in the face of Zen philosophy. Ten-sion and attachment are present in multiple formshere; the series of painted fans serving as a me-morial to the artist’s father, suggest nostalgia, but

their repeating forms also hints at the obsessivenature of memorial. The small, frenetic strokes thatadorn the fans seem somewhat confined as com-pared to the larger wall-sized works, in which theartist’s brush strokes have freer rein to let loose hisenergy.

The emotional possibilities in Feng’s brushworkremind the viewer of this artist’s relationship topostmodern painting, in addition to his clear con-nection to classical Chinese painting. The wide, dark brushstrokes call to mind Franz Kline, whilethe use of alternative media, including coffee, teaand alcohol, recalls the transgressive use of thesematerials by Andy Warhol. Desire Landscapedoes not stop at reference, however; these worksactively enrich postmodern technique and createintriguing links among the artists of Feng’s post-

modern lineage. One has to wonder how the useof a mop as a painting implement adds to our con-ception of “action painting.” We stop to considerwhat cultural context is at work when using deli-cate washes made from tea. A personality beginsto take shape behind the works, one that is bothplayful and contemplative, questioning every as-pect of the work and the idea of the artist.

Amid these dialogues, Feng’s work seems overallto be seeking a space to inhabit, as evidencedby the vistas expanding across his canvases andhis stretching of calligraphy to the point of ab-straction, in order to make room for new modes of

expression. In two of his circular canvases Fengcovers the composition with small circles of lac-quer arranged in a strict coordinate grid, as if tosuggest a mapping of the new territories and vis-tas entered by his work, plotting the exact coor-dinates among all of its referents in order to comedown from the high vantage points of these de-sire(d) landscapes and truly inhabit them. M
