In an era of constant scrutiny and mistrust of governments it is reassuring to know that the City of Albany’s Police, Fire and Ambulance levy has been well thought out, researched and reviewed, and they are asking for no more than what it takes to get the job done. After a review of the proposed levy the Governmental Affairs

Committee voted to support the renewal of the levy and is encouraging all members to Vote Yes when they get their ballots.

City of Albany Public Safety Levy: A fi ve year operating levy that was fi rst implemented in 2002 (by tremendous support of voters) that supports Police, Fire and Ambulance services. This levy renewal will allow for continued services within city limits. With a population increase since the last levy there is an increased demand for services. The citizens and businesses in Albany need to continue their support for public safety.

MOTHERS DAY AND OTHER MAY EVENTSMother’s Day is Sunday, May 8th. A special day to celebrate and thank your mother for all that she has provided to you and your family to nurture and enrich your lives. I hope you and your mother and family have a wonderful Mother’s Day.

April began with a bang on April 5th with the 16th Annual Ag Appreciation Breakfast. Our guest speakers from the local area high school FFA Chapters gave a great presentation. The future is bright and the next generation is well prepared to lead our agricultural community.

The Chamber Board of Directors had a very productive Board retreat at Five Pines Resort in Sisters on April 14 – 15. We focused on the Horizon Initiatives: Chambers 2025, published in 2015 by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. The Chamber Board intends to utilize these initiatives to help shape the direction of your Chamber for the next 10 years so that we adapt with the times, business culture, and continue to thrive for the next generations.

Tom and Annette Krupicka with Tom’s Garden Center hosted Business After Hours on April 19th. Thanks to those that attended we had a great turnout. As you purchase gardening and lawn supplies I encourage you to support Tom’s Garden Center and our other Chamber member nurseries.

Tom Krupicka had an encore performance and served as the April Membership Forum Luncheon speaker on April 27th. The title of his talk was “What’s Bugging You?”, as always, Tom’s presentation was very informative.

I invite all of you to come to the park next to the Weatherford Thompson law fi rm on Friday, May 13th from noon to 2:00 p.m. as we host the Joe Beaver Show. Mike Parker, the voice of the Beavers, will broadcast live from the park. Our fi rm will provide pizza, beverages, cookies and other items. In addition, there will be a number of gift cards from local area merchants raffl ed off at the conclusion of the Show. Please attend and spend a long lunch hour with your friends and business

associates. This is a great way to start the weekend early.

Business After Hours will be held on May 17th at Stutzman Services. The May Membership Forum Luncheon will be held on May 25th at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center. Ruth Miles, the State of Oregon Small Business Advocate, will be our guest speaker. I encourage you to attend Business After Hours and the Membership Forum and bring a friend or co-worker.

We continue to recruit new members. We are enjoying a small increase in membership and actively seeking new members. If you have any tips on potential members, please contact Tom Leggate at the Chamber. Tom will follow up with you and work to recruit the new member.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a way of recognizing, understanding, and choosing how we think, feel, and act. It shapes our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves. It defi nes how and what we learn; it allows us to set priorities; it determines the majority of our daily actions. Research suggests it is responsible for as much as 80% of the “success” in our lives.

To build a competitive advantage for your company, you must start with Emotional Intelligence. Your ability to motivate yourself and others is key to business success. Your EI is one of your strongest

assets as a leader. As your team’s “Emotional Thermostat”, your mood and temperament infl uences your staff and your customers.

The basis of the EI competencies goes back to Dr. David McClelland of Harvard and the Hay Group along with Multi Health Systems. These groups studied what the top 10% performers do differently than average performers. Additionally, the Human Capital Institute and Multi Health Systems Organization looked at Return on Investment 6data and found a causal relationship between EI and ROI

In this Leadership Edge you will learn the defi nition of Emotional Intelligence and its impact on leadership. Additionally, you will be able to identify how EI affects you and your team. Finally, you will have the opportunity to develop a Wise Mind, a simple skill you can use to access your Emotional Intelligence.

Terri Houde will lead this month's session. She is a faculty member at Linn-Benton Community College and has a Master’s Degree in Counseling. She has been a trainer for over 10 years and has 5 years of experience working at the executive level. Using a blend of humor, theory, and practical tools, Terri motivates, rejuvenates, and educates her audiences. Terri uses real-life scenarios from her consulting practice to demonstrate effective techniques to manage change, renew resilience, and achieve maximum results. She works with groups to transfer their learning into doing.

I decided to leave the family business at the age of 28 to become a Financial Advisor at Edward Jones. In 2014 I decided to completely change directions to help my then, fi ancé manage Xtreme Grafx. I have three young boys, Holden (9), Parker (7) and Jackson (4) and am now married to my best friend/boss, Arthur.

Business Marketing Niche: Xtreme Grafx has been in business for more than 10 years. We offer outdoor sign production and installation, award winning vehicle wraps, graphic design, large format printing, banners and custom apparel. We pride ourselves in being able to manufacture in our store 99% of what we sell and by doing that, we are keeping jobs local in our community. One of our passions is giving back to the community. Last year we were able to support over 50 non-profi t groups and other agencies in Albany and surrounding areas. At Xtreme Grafx “Image is Everything”.

Biggest Issue Facing Albany: I believe one of the biggest issues facing Albany, is people outsourcing work to save a few cents. This is taking away from local jobs and our local economy.

Chamber Involvement: I am the co-chair of the Albany Business Extravaganza and am a Chamber Ambassador. I attend Greeters, Business After Hours, Women in Business, Lunch Forum, the Ag Appreciation Breakfast, and Emerging
