Boat Owners UrgedTo Heed Bill Os SaleOwners of new unregistered
boats who want to get their crafton the water immediately shouldtake heed of the bill of sale.Clyde Patton, Executive Direc-tor of the N. C. Wildlife Re-sources Commission states thatalthough it is Commission policyto allow new boat owners to usea bill of sale in lieu of a boatregistration certificate and boatnumber, boat dealers sometimesfail to put enough information onthe bill of sale to bring it withinpolicy requirements.
Patton said that a bill of salewill be acceptable to wildlifeprotectors in lieu of a certificateof registration for a period ofthirty days if it meets these re-quirements: (1) full name andaddress of boat dealer; (2> fullname and address of boat buy-er,’ (3) make of boat; (4) lengthin feet; (5) year built; (6) hullmaterial; (7) kind of propulsion;(8) date of purchase; (9) date ofapplication for official certifi-cate number, and (10) a state-ment subscribed to and sworn toby both dealer and buyer be-fore a notary public that the in-formation given in the bill ofsale is true and accurate.
“The 1959 Boating Safety Act,”Patton said, requires that allboats required to be registeredmust be registered and appro-priate numbers displayed beforeit can be operated on the watersof the State.
“The provision for using a billof sale in lieu of a registrationcertificate is a policy establish-ed by the Commission for theconvenience of new boat own-ers, and boat dealers. A bill ofsale, however, will not be honor-ed unless it fulfils the require-ments.”
