Patented technology from NASA & inXitu Flexible positioning of analysis head Duetto allows for the analysis of many kinds of objects due to its unique, and flexibleanalysis head. Mounted on a tripod, the analysis head is aligned to the object to be analyzed using an integrated laser alignment tool. This ensures the object is correctlypositioned for proper data collection.

Of course, as Duetto is an X-ray based technique, the sample is unharmed by theanalysis. In only a few short minutes, Duetto provides both mineral/phase ID as wellas elemental analysis using the well established techniques of XRD and XRF.

Non-destructive analysis

Born from the desire to perform X-ray diffraction experiments on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), the inXitu team of engineers have captured this revolutionary technology for earthbound applications in Duetto, the world’s first “in place” combined X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence tool for art conservation analysis. Using a specifically developed direct excitation charge coupled device (CCD) “camera”, Duetto is able to collect X-ray photons for both X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence simultaneously. With energy resolution of ~200 ev (5.9KeV), Duetto is ideal for elemental analysis for those elements between Potassium and Uranium on the periodic table. XRF analysis is as simple as viewing the software spectrum display. X-ray diffraction is a classic reflec-tion based experiment resulting in a diffraction pattern easily processed with the included software.

Duetto is shipped with software (XPowder) used for processing the resulting X-ray diffrac-tion patterns. XPowder comes complete with the necessary mineral identification database as well as the ability to perform quantitative analysis on the identified minerals/phases. Should the user wish, Duetto provides the resulting diffraction pattern in a variety of industry standard formats for integration with other third party software.

Duetto operates using a wireless connection between the embedded computer and the user’s laptop personal computer. Using the industry standard 802.11 b/g compliant wire-less connection allows for the user to operate the instrument from a comfortable position several meters away as well as use any Wi-Fi compliant device.
