Welcome to the May issue of In Security. As the weather grows warmer, thoughts turn

to IFSEC where many of you will be reading this. A number of the products discussed in our Products & Industry News section will be on display at the show in Birmingham, and we would encourage all readers to examine these exciting innovations for themselves.

Our cover story this issue focuses on perimeter security at one of Spain’s most important solar plants. FLIR’s thermal imaging cameras were selected to enhance perimeter surveillance after dark as part of an intelligent security solution (see page 2).

Elsewhere in the magazine, Tim Biddulph tells In Security why Samsung’s latest range of feature-rich full-HD cameras are clearly a better choice for facility surveillance (see page 20).

For commuters looking to let off steam before leaving the city, SALTO is providing

a high-specification electronic locker lock at a revolutionary gym in central London (see page 24).

In the picturesque German countryside, eneo’s HDcctv cameras have been chosen

to protect the region’s largest cattle farm (see page 28).

Meanwhile, Tyco Security Products offers some essential advice to companies considering centralising their access control systems through an enterprise solution (see page 32).

As security and facilities management systems become increasingly interconnected, James Kelly, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), discusses how IP technology can be harnessed to increase efficiency and reduce costs (see page 36).

Paxton’s electronic access control system, Net2, is being taken for a test drive at Michelin’s tyre factory in Dundee (see page 44).

Solarpack is a multinational integrated management company focusing on electricity generation projects

in the field of solar photovoltaic energy and is specialised in the development, financing, construction, operation and management of these projects. Controlling a large area where high valuable equipment is deployed all over the site is not an easy task, and it usually requires investing a great amount of money to keep the facility well protected.

At one of the most important solar plants in the west of Spain, Solarpack is now protecting its 41-acre perimeter with an intelligent analytics solution produced by Valencia-based company CCTV CENTER, which combines FLIR thermal imaging cameras and Aimetis Symphony powerful analytics software.

Business challengeSolarpack is continuously investigating new security solutions to find a pragmatic security system to protect its installations while taking into account the complexity of a solar plant. In this project, the challenge was reducing investment costs and maintenance costs, as well as improving the security system so it would provide a more effective and reliable solution, offering automatic notification of alerts and events. Quick search and review of video images was also an essential requirement. A number of tests made with other security systems lead Solarpack to determine that thermal imaging cameras were the best solution, and in particular FLIR’s thermal imaging cameras. It was then when Solar Pack contacted CCTV CENTER, FLIR’s official distributor and integrator in Spain.

SolutionCCTV CENTER presented a solution combining FLIR thermal imaging cameras and Aimetis Symphony analytics software. Aimetis Symphony is award-winning intelligent video surveillance software that offers a single, innovative, open IP video platform for video management, video analytics, system integration and alarm management.

The superior quality images from the FLIR thermal imaging cameras, together with Aimetis Symphony analytics, provided a great solution for the whole system. The end user had had previous experience in projects with thermal imaging cameras, and good image quality was always a main requirement.

Due to the high contrast of their images, thermal imaging cameras are highly recommended for analytics and perimeter applications. Thermal imaging

cameras can detect a human target at a distance of up to 2,000m and produce clear and crisp images in total darkness, light fog and rain where color CCTV cameras can’t. Thermal imaging cameras provide an ideal solution for 24/7 surveillance, saving costs in IR illuminators or any other additional illumination system.

InstallationFor the perimeter protection of this solar plant, 21 FLIR F-Series thermal imaging cameras with a resolution of 320x240 pixels were installed on two-to-three metre high poles, alongside a wired fence. The F-series are fully enabled for control and operation over digital and analog networks. The F-Series provide high-contrast imagery optimised to get the most out of video analytics software. Digital Detail Enhancement ensures clear, properly contrasted thermal images in all weather conditions.

The thermal imaging cameras work alongside an intruder detection system, both connected to a central station alarm (CSA). All the thermal imaging cameras are integrated with Aimetis Symphony software so they can be controlled from a server PC placed at a remote workstation.

“Integrating the FLIR F-Series cameras with Aimetis software was a great solution”, said Pablo Campos, CCTV CENTER’s project head. “We used FLIR thermal imaging cameras before with Aimetis Symphony, and the FLIR F-Series are included in the list of compatible devices. Once calibrated, analytics performance is outstanding.”

Target detectionAimetis Symphony software is configured with a virtual fence, so when an intruder crosses the virtual line, determined by the operator, an alarm is triggered. The alarm is then sent to the CSA where the operator receives the signal. The operator then connects with the Aimetis Symphony client and checks the video stream associated to verify if it is a false alarm or a real threat.

The system can make distinction between humans and animals. When the system identifies the target as human, it will start tracking the target. The software doesn’t trigger any alarm unless the target crosses the virtual line configured by the operator. When the system identifies a target as an animal or unknown object, it will not send an alarm at all, even when an animal crosses the virtual

fence. This is because “animals” are considered to be authorised intruders in the system. The high quality of the thermal imaging cameras and the reliability of the analytics makes it possible to make this distinction, resulting in a drastically drop in the number of false alarms.

Cost savingsBefore the new installation, between ten and 15 security guards were hired to protect the premises. Now there are no security guards patrolling or controlling the access to the solar park, as everything can be managed from a remote workstation by only one or two operators.

“The new installation is saving a lot of money and is far more effective than having a team of security guards viewing daylight cameras that can’t display images at night or in bad weather conditions,” said Pablo Campos. “Furthermore, the use of thermal imaging technology saves the cost of deploying and keeping an illuminating system running. Also not a lot of electricity is consumed using thermal imaging cameras instead of other solutions, and maintenance costs are low as well.”

The chosen perimeter protection package combined high quality thermal imaging cameras and award-winning intelligent video surveillance software

Urmet software developers team up with premier property developers in LondonChelsea Creek is an exciting new dockside development in the heart of London. London-based property developers St George have created an outstanding selection of highly specified apartments and penthouses set within a series of tranquil waterways and riverside dock. This new dockside collection is set to be one of London’s most prestigious addresses, and Urmet are extremely proud to have been chosen to provide the door-entry and access control system for this exceptionally elegant new development.

St George needed a system for a phased, multi-block development that could operate on a site-wide IP backbone. The system needed to offer complete flexibility in terms of the number of concierges and where they were located. As with most developments

of this nature, being able to relocate the concierge as the building work progresses is vital. An IP-based system now allows this by simply unplugging the RJ45 connector and moving the concierge PC to another location.

The system specified was IPervoice, Urmet’s IP door-entry platform. Urmet’s technical department in Italy set about making a number of bespoke changes to the software that would allow the apartments in each block to start with a number one. This allows for multiple apartments starting with apartment one without the need for an additional prefix. Other valuable functions of IPervoice included lift control, RF car park control and remote access.

With Urmet’s range of IP solutions, all the blocks were interlinked to provide instant, single-platform control for all access and security-related requirements. Apart from the fact that the entire development operates on a single platform, the other main benefits offered by the Urmet solution are scalability and the fact that the entire system can be pre-configured off-site.n For more information visit www.urmetdomus.co.uk

eWs Dallmeier receives patent

for new multifocal sensor technology The German Patent and Trademark Office has confirmed just how unique the new Panomera multifocal sensor system is. Dallmeier has been granted a patent entitled “Überwachungseinrichtung” with an issue date of 4 June 2011. Meanwhile, the three-months objection period, during which third parties can raise an objection against the assignation of patent, has expired. As no legally effective protest has been filed, the assignation of patent has now become irrevocable. The number of the patent is 10 2011 103 378.

It has been just over a year since the application was filed and the German patent has finally been granted. “A very short time when one considers that patent applications can often drag on for several years”, explained Dieter Dallmeier. “This patent underscores the unique nature of this technology.”

The multifocal sensor system convinces with its new lens and sensor concept: Panomera works with several lenses, each of which has a different focal length. Thanks to this, the camera can be adapted optimally to the area for surveillance, so details are still clearly visible, not only close up but also at very long distances, and individuals can be recognised even at 160m distance.

The camera permanently records the whole image with highest detail resolution. PTZ functions are therefore also possible in the recordings. This way every incident can be reconstructed and documented subsequently after the event.

Panomera is already used in numerous national and international projects, such as in various German Football League stadia (Mönchengladbach, Leverkusen, Cologne and Dortmund), at airports (Nuremberg and Naples) or in the French shopping-mall La Part-Dieu in Lyon. n For more information visit www.dallmeier.com

Axis brings new dimension to Bonhams’ global bidding applicationBonhams, one of the world’s oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art antiques, has utilised the power of Axis cameras to bring live video feed to its worldwide “LiveBid” bidding application.

The indoor surveillance system installed at the world-famous auction house incorporates AXIS P5534 PTZ Dome Network cameras that have been introduced to its existing LiveBid bidding application to provide a live sound and video feed, meaning that bidders could not only hear the auctioneer but actually see them as well.

Robin Porter, business development manager of Quru who installed the system, said: “We have worked with Bonhams to streamline its IT and develop a bespoke ERP application to manage its entire auction process. Taking this a step further, we developed an interactive application, LiveBid, that would allow registered users to bid live on auction lots from anywhere in the world. We developed the video application and started the pilot at Bonhams New Bond Street HQ.”

Atul Rajput, regional director, Northern Europe, Axis Communications concluded: “This is a great example of the convergence away from analogue CCTV to digital IP surveillance. It is capable of so much more than

traditional security, enabling applications that optimise business processes, built upon an open-standards platform that offers opportunities for IT integrators to offer bespoke development.”

The AXIS P5534 PTZ Dome Network Camera offers HDTV-quality video and an 18x zoom for indoor surveillance applications. With an IP51-rated protection against dust, it is ideal for use in demanding environments including warehouses and shops, so was the perfect model for Bonhams’ auction rooms. CEM Systems awarded contract to secure New Zealand’s major airportCEM Systems, part of Tyco Security Products, is pleased to announce it has been awarded the contract to secure Auckland Airport. The industry-renowned CEM AC2000 security management system will be installed to ensure the highest level of security. ADT New Zealand has been selected as the integrator in the project and will install the AC2000 system at the airport’s domestic and international terminals.

Australasia’s second busiest international airport, Auckland Airport is served by more than 20 international airlines. Auckland Airport has been voted as one of the ten best airports in the world three years in a row, and is a major driver of the economy. More than 70 per cent of visitors enter or leave New Zealand via Auckland Airport, which handles more than 14 million passengers a year.

“Being awarded the contract to secure Auckland Airport is another significant win for CEM,” said Andrew Fulton, Senior Director, Global Sales, CEM Systems. “CEM has a proven history of understanding the dynamics and needs of airports and the industry-leading CEM AC2000 system has been used to secure airports around the world for over 20 years; Auckland Airport joins some of the world’s most prestigious airports in selecting CEM Systems.”

The powerful CEM AC2000 system has a proven itself as one of the most reliable and resilient security solutions available. The system at Auckland Airport will utilise powerful AC2000 software modules including CEM’s AC2000 VIPPS (Visual Imaging and Pass Production System), which allows security personnel to produce passes and access rights for staff and visitors. The airport will also use AC2000 WEB Visitors, which will enable system users to request and manage temporary cardholders (visitors) via a standard web browser.

AC2000 T&A (Time and Attendance module) will also be installed, offering easy-to-read reports of employee In and Out times. The airport will also use AC2000 Failover to create a system with a high-level of redundancy. AC2000 Failover provides the ability to create and maintain a copy of the main AC2000 server. In the event that the main server fails, the AC2000 Failover server will immediately take over until such times as the main server is restored.

The use of CEM S3030 portable card readers was key to the security upgrade at Auckland Airport. These readers enable on-site airport

security staff to validate cards at remote sites or areas with no mains power supply, and they can also be used as mobile devices for random checks in emergency evacuations.

“Our team will work to complete the installation of the CEM AC2000 system at Auckland Airport with minimum disruption to airport operations,” said David Tombs, National Manager – Commercial, ADT Security New Zealand. “The CEM portable readers will enable us to manage the system switchover without any loss of access integrity. We will also be using existing cabling at the airport to complete the installation, keeping the project cost effective and delivered on time.”n For more information visit www.cemsys.com

Cathexis Launches CatVision VMS at IFSEC 2013IFSEC 2013 will see the debut of Cathexis’ new CatVision VMS suite – a powerful new IP video management system which offers the ultimate in simplicity for installers, integrators and end users alike. At IFSEC, Cathexis is offering visitors the chance to download a free trial version from their website to try it for themselves.

CatVision is a sophisticated and very easily configured video management software solution. It benefits from Cathexis’ 18 years of experience in supplying high-end analogue systems, and builds on an in-depth understanding of the needs of installers to deliver a cutting edge suite of digital technology, well adapted to today’s IP based security demands.

Cathexis sales director, Mark Ross, said: “We are acutely aware of the challenges facing IP systems installation engineers, so in designing CatVision our primary requirement was to make it extremely easy to load, configure and commission. IP surveillance systems can have hundreds or thousands of cameras, and multiple recording parameters, so Cathexis has introduced a Wizard process – similar to what you’ll find on your PC – that takes the engineer through the entire set-up process step by step. Multiple cameras

can be added with just a few clicks and the recording configuration process is equally simple.

“The end result is a simple and easy-to-use engineer interface overlaying a very powerful VMS platform, meaning less training, less time on site and easier maintenance. And Cathexis backs this up with the highest levels of support in the industry.”

CatVision features built-in video analytics capabilities, and offers system health monitoring. The solution is also available with a Network Addressable Storage option. The software further provides dewarping functionality for 360-degree cameras, such as the PanoCam360 from AMG Panogenics. The system supports the ONVIF interoperability standard, and integrates with the majority of IP camera brands.n For more information visit www.cathexiseu.com

Navtech Radar goes solar for radar solution

Navtech Radar will feature its new AdvanceGuard AGS1600 EXTREME radar at IFSEC 2013, which has been specifically developed to cope with the environmental and climate conditions found in oil and gas exploration and production. The company’s AdvanceGuard solution will also be showcased live with the advanced control software suite, witness2, at the exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham on 13th-17th May.

Keith Chapman, Head of Global Sales at Navtech Radar, said: “This year we will be promoting our airport site surveillance technology on the stand, while also running live scheduled demonstrations from our Land Rover parked near the entrance to the NEC. We have two new major products for IFSEC visitors this year. First of all, our new ASG1600 EXTREME has been specifically developed, to cope with the harsh environmental conditions, prevalent in the oil and gas industry. The ASG1600 EXTREME operates within a temperature range from -40°C to +65°C. There is also an additional option to upgrade the radar to an explosion proof version.

“We have developed a solution which is entirely powered by solar energy, which has been tested in the UAE over the last few months, and in which we’re already experiencing a high level of interest. Radar is an ideal solution for the surveillance of large areas such as airports. The AdvanceGuard security surveillance

solution is truly an ideal choice for any large-scale site, as it can also cope with adverse environmental conditions.”

The AdvanceGuard solution enables sites under surveillance to be divided into multiple zones with varying threat and detection levels, identifying and classifying the movement of multiple targets within the range of the radar, which are in turn recorded within an audit log. The benefit of such analytical software means the system can be configured to manage – and greatly reduce – the number of false or nuisance alarms, while still giving security the best possible advanced warning and tracking of genuine, real time intrusion within a site and or the approaches to its perimeter.n For more information visit www.navtechradar.com

eWs BSIA welcomes Lords

recommendation for greater export support for SMEsThe British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has welcomed the release of a new report entitled “Roads to Success: SME Exports”, published last month by the House of Lords Select Committee on Small and Medium Enterprises.

The report, to which the BSIA submitted its own evidence, summarises the results of the committee’s inquiry into what role the Government can play in helping more than 4.8m UK SMEs to boost their export sales, acknowledging the important role that exporting plays in assisting economic recovery.

Recognising the potential of British SMEs, the report insists that “more has to be done to disseminate information about exporting – about how to reap the benefits while minimising the risks, how to take the first step and where to go when difficulties arise.”

For the UK’s private security industry, exporting has become increasingly important during the economic downturn, a fact supported by a recent survey of the BSIA’s Export Council, in which 85 per cent of members indicated that exporting had become more important to their business since the recession, while two thirds reported that overseas business had increased for them over the past 12 months.

Alex Carmichael, Director of Technical and Export Services at the BSIA, commented: “With exporting becoming increasingly important to our sector, the BSIA has welcomed the publication of this report, which represents the Government’s acknowledgement that more help can be offered to SMEs looking to expand their business outside of the UK.”

For UK security companies considering taking the first steps towards exporting their products and services, members of the BSIA’s specialist Export Council has compiled its top ten tips for getting started, which includes advice on making and developing contacts, how to get the best out of UKTI and British Embassies, and what pitfalls to avoid. n The full report of the House of Lords Select Committee on SMEs can be downloaded from the Houses of Parliament’s website.

IQinVision announces full array of wide dynamic range cameras IQinVision, has announced the introduction of several new IQeye camera models featuring Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) functionality. IP megapixel camera users are frequently faced with poor video quality resulting from difficult lighting conditions. This can take the form of either blown-out (over-exposed) or overly dark video which occurs during certain times of the day caused by, for example, windows or doors being opened and closed

or vehicle headlights flashing through a scene. These problematic lighting conditions occur when extreme variations in light levels (bright and dark) occur in the same scene simultaneously. IQinVision’s new camera models feature WDR functionality, enabling them to produce clear, crisp images, even in the most challenging lighting conditions. This enhancement will be available in the company’s Alliance-pro, Sentinel, and 7 Series camera lines and is offered in 720p, 1080p, and 3.1MP resolutions, thus catering to the majority of market applications. These new models will augment the current line of products and are fully compatible with all major video management systems on the market today. n For more information see www.iqeye.com

Milestone XProtect 2013 portfolio centralises surveillance management

Milestone Systems, the open platform company in IP video management software (VMS), has announced expansions to the Milestone XProtect VMS portfolio with the addition of a new product called XProtect Expert and a new system concept, Milestone Intercon-nect. New versions of XProtect Corporate and all client interfaces will also be released in May. With a greater focus on delivering products optimised for customer needs, the new offerings in the XProtect VMS line will give increased flexibility and centralised management for dispersed locations.

Milestone founder and Chief Product Officer John Blem described the brand-new XProtect Expert 2013 as specially designed for medium and large instal-lations. “We are strengthening Milestone’s offering in the mid to high-end market,” he said. “The central management interface allows large systems with multiple recording servers to be efficiently managed as one uniform system. With features for sophisti-cated live monitoring, centralised management and high-performance video recording, XProtect Expert provides scheduled and event-driven rules to make it easy to automate security actions and control external systems, reducing the number of manual tasks.”

The new XProtect Expert 2013 gives instant feedback on system performance, enabling proactive system administration. Configuration reports enable system integrators to document the system and provide de-tailed listing of all configuration settings as well. Highly

efficient 64-bit recording servers help save money on total system costs because customers can run more cameras with fewer servers. Edge storage further-more can provide a level of reliability for installations with unstable network connections: the software can use camera-integrated storage as a safeguard func-tion for uninterrupted audio and video recording in the event of network or server failure.

XProtect Corporate 2013 also now provides high availability support for high-security installations, enabled by the new hot standby recording server that maintains video viewing and recording capabilities with minimal interruption and video loss in the event of system hardware problems. Both XProtect Corporate and XProtect Expert come packaged with the latest suite of client viewing applications: the full-featured XProtect Smart Client 2013, the easy-to-use XProtect Web Client 2013, and Milestone Mobile 2013 for users on the go.

Milestone has also introduced a new system concept called Milestone Interconnect, a cost-effective way to connect different XProtect VMS products with XProtect Corporate 2013 to manage centralised surveillance across geographically dispersed sites. Milestone Inter-connect is designed to enable efficient branch rollouts with easy installation and system cloning possibilities, combined with optimised daily operation where proac-tive alarm detection and remote management reduce the need for costly on-site visits.

Eric Fullerton, chief sales and marketing officer, said: “Milestone Interconnect combines the cost-effi-ciency from low- and mid-market XProtect software with the power of the central management in XProtect Corporate. It even allows the administrator to combine local and central video storage to choose the most suitable storage solution for each situation.” n For more information visit: www.milestonesys.com

IndigoVision IndigoVision launches new 20 Channel Encoder

IndigoVision’s 20 Channel Encoder makes it even easier, and even more cost effective, to upgrade existing analogue security systems to a world-class IP security management solution. “There are still a large number of analogue security installations,” stated Marcus Kneen, IndigoVision’s CEO. “When security professionals are looking to migrate their analogue system to IP, they are often told to replace existing cameras with IP cameras. To many, that is just too expensive.”

“It gets worse”, commented Paul Murphy, IndigoVision’s Marketing Manager. “We have heard shocking stories of other manufacturers knowingly selling cheap encoders for analogue cameras with appalling video quality and latency so high that PTZ cameras are uncontrollable. Installers and security managers discover this after the offending encoders have been installed. The reality is, these cheap encoders simply don’t deliver.

“Analogue users expect high quality video with smooth PTZ control, without throwing out their existing analogue cameras. The new IndigoVision 20 Channel Encoder makes this a reality by delivering amazing video

quality and flawless PTZ control at a truly cost effective price. Add in IndigoVision’s Control Center – the world’s first truly scalable security management solution – and security professionals can really upgrade to an awesome IP video security solution.”

This new 20 Channel Encoder makes the move to IP easy. Designed specifically for installation in a rack cabinet, this double density encoder requires 50 per cent less rack space and uses 60 per cent less power per channel, due to IndigoVision’s latest encoder technology.n For more information visit www.indigovision.com

IS: Samsung Techwin’s new 2MP Full HD (1080P) network camera range has been billed as the company’s most significant product launch for 2013. Why is so much importance being placed on these new models?TB: Demand for high definition cameras is accelerating, with increasing number of users wishing to be able to monitor and record evidence-grade images. Everyone at Samsung Techwin is confident these cameras and domes will play a major role in helping us gain the number one market leadership position in respect of IP network-based video surveillance systems. At the heart of each of the models is a new DSP chipset designed specifically to allow customers to take full advantage of the amazing

quality of the images which can be captured by HD cameras. Our very clever design engineers have packed this DSP chipset, which we have called WiseNetIII, with an almost endless list of technically advanced installer and user-friendly features.

IS: Do cameras actually need even more new technical features; there seems to be no shortage of cameras and domes already available which would appear to be doing a good job? TB: The new features have in fact been developed as a direct result of an intensive market research programme which was carried out by our worldwide product management team. The objective of this research was to identify what users and installers felt were

the key “must haves” in order for high definition IP network cameras to automatically become the preferred choice when a new video surveillance system was being specified, or an existing system was being upgraded.

IS: And what are these “must haves”?TB: Price is, of course, an important consideration and it was also not a surprise to learn that customers wanted to see further improvements in image quality and particularly so in low light conditions. Also high up on the wish list was smarter utilisation of network bandwidth and the need for cameras to be more installer-friendly by making them easier to install and configure.

Higher, sharper, wiser

Clear picture: the cameras in the WiseNetIII range can provide clear, high definition surveillance images in challenging lighting and environmental conditions

Page 23: In Security - May 2013

IS: So have you been able to deliver on all of these key requirements?TB: The extremely impressive set of features incorporated into the eight new models certainly deliver on a number of different fronts, not the least of which is image quality. Many of the features built into the new cameras and domes ensure that superb quality images can be captured and recorded regardless of the lighting or environmental conditions. In fact, all of the models which can capture high quality images when the lighting level is as low as 0.01 lux have an ultra fast frame rate of 60fps at 1080p, which results in latency-free, clear images. This can be particularly beneficial in a scene with moving subjects by ensuring that image edges are kept sharp and clear.

There is also enhanced Wide Dynamic Range built into the WiseNetIII DSP chipset which, when working with performance greater than 100dB, can accurately produce images in scenes that simultaneously contain very bright and very dark areas. The correct colour is maintained by adopting Regional Adaptive Tone Mapping, and motion blur is reduced by using Samsung’s Motion Artefact Reduction technology.

A particularly interesting feature is the use of P-iris technology which optimises lens iris control to provide improved depth of field and sharpness. We also have a Defog feature which can be used to help improve the clarity of images captured in poor weather conditions such as rain, or fog, while Digital

Image Stabilisation (DIS), previously only seen in analogue chipsets, negates the effects of a camera shaking due to high winds or building vibration.

IS: These certainly sound like very powerful, innovative features but won’t most installers find them difficult to use?TB: Any professional installer should easily be able to set up all of these features and, where necessary, we can of course provide training. There will also be video tips on how to get the best out of some of these key features posted on youTube. A good example of this is the Simple Focus feature which automatically focuses the camera and is built into most of the models. We are certain this will impress >

installers in terms of the potential to reduce installation and maintenance time, as all that is needed is one simple push of a button on the back of the camera to achieve optical focus.

An additional benefit, by the way, of this very clever feature is that when the camera mode changes from colour to monochrome with the help of the camera’s true Day & Night function, the Simple Focus automatically optimises the back-focus required for clear sharp images.

IS: Are there any other features which will appeal to installers?TB: We have introduced a new cabling system to improve the ease and speed with which the camera can be installed. We now supply cables and glands separately in the box, making it easy for installers to choose the option of directly connecting their own existing or new network cables, and in the case of a dome, they can do so without having to remove the electronics from the back box.

IS: So what have you built into the new cameras which allows users to make better use of the available bandwidth? TB: Well firstly, Samsung’s Smart codec technology offers facial detection and allows up to two areas of specific interest within a scene to be captured at a higher resolution than the rest. This means that areas such as doorways, human faces or windows are transmitted or recorded at high quality, while other areas within the scene are reduced to save file sizes and put the user firmly in control of bandwidth management.

Secondly, a multi-crop feature enables users to also highlight and crop up to nine areas of interest in order for the camera to only send the images within that area at a preferred resolution and frame rate. Further bandwidth and recording space savings can also be achieved with the help of the third generation of Samsung’s highly acclaimed Super Noise Reduction (SSNR) technology, which eliminates image

noise in low light conditions. There is also the option of using

Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA) to detect activity by various means, such as face detection, tripwire and enter/exit direction, object appear/disappear and “tampering”, which creates an alert if paint is sprayed on a camera lens or there is unauthorised movement of a camera away from its usual field of view.

It is certainly worth pointing out that each of the new models have the capacity to store on board up to 2048GB of video, which means bandwidth requirements can be reduced by recording and storing video of pre-defined events locally, or what is now commonly referred to as “at the edge”. Last, but by no means least, it is worth pointing out that the new WiseNetIII models are supported by the Samsung Security Manager license-free video surveillance management software platform.n Tim Biddulph is IP Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd

SALTO PROvIDeS SMART eLecTRONIc LOcKS AT RevOLuTIONARy GyM AND BIKe cLuB FOR cOMMuTeRS IN LONDON’S SOHO

Located next to Carnaby Street in London’s media, advertising and entertainment district, H2 Bike Run is the brainchild

of property developer and keen cyclist Piers Slater. Like many cyclists he was fed up with arriving at work hot and sweaty, then having to shower and change in cramped offices or health clubs. Tired of this and of using poor facilities, he decided to create a solution to the problem.

With the growing popularity of commuter cycling in London, Slater invested £1.9m raised from family and friends to develop the first H2 Bike Run facility which has been built on the site of a former car park. Eventually he plans to develop the concept into a chain across the capital and believes

there is a demand for up to 20 clubs across central London. He has already identified ten locations for development where the whole potential catchment area is within a five-minute walk.

The club offers 300 secure bike parking spaces inside the building on Josta racks – useful in Soho where space and parking, even for cyclists, is at a premium – together with more than 40 luxury showers, well appointed changing facilities – the women’s ones even provide hair smoothers so that female cyclists can smarten up their helmet hair before the working day – 1,400 lockers, sports therapy, a laundry service, bike servicing, cycle retail accessories and repairs and a small gym equipped with kettle bells, medicine balls and a “war machine” system of pulleys, which is claimed

to be a more holistic way of working the body’s muscles.

Personal trainers are available, and the whole set-up is designed to fit in with the likely needs and time constraints of commuters. And for cyclists who want more, there is a large spin studio. This is affiliated to the New york-based Spinning programme that guarantees serious quality workouts. A timetable tells you in advance who your instructor is and whether the session will be an endurance, interval, strength or race/recovery ride. It also indicates the target heart-rate zones.

As well as attracting individual memberships, H2 Bike Run believes the clubs will appeal to employers who will see corporate membership as a cost-effective alternative to providing facilities for cyclists and runners themselves.

Fit for purpose

Page 27: In Security - May 2013

From the start of the project, Slater knew a high level of security for the extensive locker facilities at the club was something that had to be got right first time. With work-bound cyclists and runners arriving with their personal possessions including money, smart phones, laptop computers and the like, his lockers required a secure and reliable solution that could be customised to meet H2 Bike Run’s specific environment.

“As world leaders in advanced battery powered wireless access control solutions, the SALTO XS4 electronic locker lock was ideal for H2 Bike Run,” commented Chris Saxby of Ansador Ltd, SALTO’s local business partner. “Working in consultation with Piers Slater and SALTO, we designed and installed a highly secure and flexible access control system to meet all of the security demands of the locker room environment at H2 Bike Run.

“The XS4 locker lock can be fully integrated with the SALTO access

control solution or be operated as a stand-alone system. Part of the brief was that the lockers had to be flexible enough to allow for change of use patterns, allowing for permanent storage use or variable – maximum two hours – use, so to achieve this SALTO fitted 1,400 lockers locks as well as nine XS4 E9450 electronic escutcheon handle sets to provide the benefits of full access control rights programmed via software as required. An automatic audit trail facility records the last 1,000 events at each locker.”

Most OEM lockers are supplied with very basic mechanical locks that offer little in the way of protection. SALTO XS4 electronic locker locks solve this problem by offering the latest in state-of-the-art electronic access control technology in a simple easy to use format. “With an ergonomically designed twist-operated locking handle making for easy use, even with wet hands, and a durable wipe clean construction that’s

highly resistant to chemicals, UV radiation and physical wear and tear, our XS4 locker lock solution has added real flexibility to the security requirement of H2 Bike Run,” said Rex Palmer, Area Sales Manager for SALTO Systems. “The battery pack, electronic components and locking mechanism are all located on the inside of the locker door, safe from potential vandalism or sabotage.”

The access reader is built into the locking handle and the ID carrier – key card, wristband, key fob or bracelet using i-Button, Mifare, Mifare plus, DESfire, DESfire EV1, Ultralight C, HID iClass, Legic, Picopass or SKIDATA technology – is simply presented to the reader and the XS4 locker lock will grant or deny access. A family option allows for multiple ID carriers to operate a single locker if required.

With future expansion plans and a possible move to other cities, the flexible XS4 locker lock system can easily grow to meet ongoing security requirements for H2 Bike Run.

eNeO DeLIveRS HDccTv AT GeRMANy’S LARGeST LIMOSIN cATTLe BReeDING FARM

Farmsteads and small villages colour the image of the old world – land developed and cultured by farmers in the North

Palatine hills. Here, at Einöllen in the Kusel administrative district, lies the Hobstätterhof farm. With a stock of 620 limousin cattle it is the largest limousin breeding farm in Germany. It is also the largest organic farm in Rhineland-Palatinate as well as being a popular day trip destination with a saloon and event hall. The “Pferdestall” [stable], as the saloon is called, has a rustic atmosphere and can accommodate up to 260 guests. A particular restaurant speciality is – and what else would you expect? – dishes of grilled limousin beef. The management decided to install a CCTV system to support its

personnel during security checks of the animal sheds. And it also used this opportunity to update the security installation in its catering area.

A job for HDcctvResponsibility for technical advice and purchase of the required video equipment was given to Sicherheitstechnik und -technologie GmbH (STT) in Sulzbach, Saarland. When the project manager, Gerhard Jank, familiarised himself with the requirements profile in detail he quickly realised this was a job for HDcctv. After all, surveillance of the breeding area primarily required fully detailed live imagery in first-class quality. And because the area under surveillance is partly open and partly roofed, subject to wet and cold weather, and also has changeable

lighting conditions, sturdy weather resistant housings and integrated infrared illumination were also essential.

Three good reasons for eneoGerhard Jank suggested an installation with eneo HDcctv products to his customer. He did this firstly because, as a member of the HDcctv Alliance, eneo provides everything from one source that is necessary for a complete system installation. His second reason was that the brand’s weather resistant housings have such a good reputation that their impressive cost effectiveness and their quality inspections are virtually part of the eneo trademark. And thirdly, in his many years of practical years of experience with eneo, Gerhard

Picture perfect

“Apart from the very good value for money and the three-year warranty, I have been impressed again and again by the high product reliability, with the competent and fast support”

Page 31: In Security - May 2013

Jank has had some very positive experiences with the brand and he values the competent advice that eneo provides to its customers.

Powerful equipmentFor the Hobstätterhof project the technical adviser recommended the HDB-2000MIR1080 HDcctv Bullet Camera from the Candid Series. Its elegant design and high functionality make it outstanding. The weather resistant housing (IP68) is fitted with a sunshield and guarantees perfect operation at temperatures from -50°C to 50°C. The camera is designed for 24-hour operation with its 30 integral 850nm LEDs giving a maximum illumination range of 50 metres. Extreme backlight and strong contrasts – caused, for instance, by the transition from the roofed parts of the cattle sheds to the open-air areas – are compensated for by D-WDR so that the maximum resolution of an impressive 1920x1080 pixels (full HD 1080p) really utilises the full richness

of detail. As the HDcctv video signals are transmitted uncompressed – i.e. 1:1 – the HDB-2000MIR1080 delivers artefact-free live imagery far superior to imagery from a comparable IP camera, and it is displayed with negligible latency on the monitor in real time. Additionally, the camera offers convenient installation in no time at all thanks to the Candid easy installation features (Plug and Play, One Screw Fix). For recording needs, the technical advisor selected the HDR-4008AE1.0 8-channel-DVR and the HDR-4016AE1.0 16-channel model. Features offered by these models include convenient access to video data by browser or a mobile terminal, various recording modes, split screen replay (full screen or quad) and a maximum hard disk capacity of four and eight TB.

Seeing is believingOf course the key technical data sound good, but a demonstration is far more convincing. And is the motto

of the HDcctv Alliance not “Seeing is believing”? The customer was more than convinced after Gerhard Jank gave a practical demonstration of the live quality of the HDB-2000MIR1080. And the DVRs also created a good impression with their simple menu structure that ensures high user comfort. The owner, Hans-Peter Schad, was also very satisfied with the competent technical advice given by STT, so it is possible to speak of all-round successful co-operation in this respect. As a result, a total of 40 of these HDcctv cameras, as well as several DVRs from eneo, were installed on the Hobstätterhof farm, the majority in the breeding area of course. In addition, the existing CCTV installation in the catering area was also re-equipped with HDcctv cameras from the Candid Series. According to Hans-Peter Schad, the HDcctv installation has lived up to the promises made in the demonstration, so that further installations are being considered at other sites.

Despite its rustic setting, the Hobstätterhof still requires state-of-the-art surveillance

The breeding area presented a range of surveillance challenges, including changeable lighting and weather conditions

Only a few people in the UK may have heard of the Finnish energy group St1. The company based in Helsinki was established in 1995 under the name Greenergy Baltic Oy and is committed primarily to the development and sale of environmentally compatible and sustainable energy solutions. Following the purchase of the Finnish service station operator St1 in 2005, the company also changed its name to St1 that year. St1 currently operates its service station business in four countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway and Poland. The company claims to operate around 1,200 service stations throughout Scandinavia.

Last summer a test phase examined conversion of analogue CCTV systems to HDcctv at St1. The management wanted to trial the promise made by HDcctv: video surveillance over coaxial cable in outstanding HD quality, which was previously the domain of only IP megapixel cameras – in practical conditions.

The company 4safe was therefore entrusted with the task of a test installation in a St1 service station near Helsinki. System installer Kai Mäntylä explained why eneo was chosen: “My experience with eneo products over many years has been absolutely positive,” he said. “Apart from the very good value for money and the three-year warranty, I have been impressed again and again by the high product reliability as well as the competent and fast support.”

Eight HDC-2100M1080 cameras were installed – four cameras less than in the analogue system. This was possible due to the fact that one of these cameras can monitor up to four petrol pumps, as opposed to only two by an analogue camera. Conversion to HDcctv therefore has the effect of considerably streamlining the system as well

as helping to save money. In the test installation the previously required 16-channel recorder was replaced by the much slimmer and ultimately more cost-effective DVR HDR-4008AE (8 channels). The existing coaxial and power cables were retained, however, along with the external housings for the cameras: they were reused for the new HDcctv cameras. eneo HDcctv was therefore not only able to notch up points by creating savings potentials and producing artifact-free imagery, but also due to its minimal training requirement: thanks to the very simple DVR menu structure, the specialist from 4Safe needed barely one and a half hours to instruct the responsible employees in all the functions and parameters of the HDR-4008AE. The positive overall impression was rounded off by the sophisticated design and solid workmanship of all the devices.

The pilot project was rated as being extremely positive. Although some time passed before the final decision was made, we have recently received confirmation: St1 will gradually convert numerous subsidiaries of its service stations in Finland to HDcctv technology from eneo. What has already been decided are the HDcctv models for which the analogue cameras will have to give way: HDD-2000MIR1080, HDD-2110M as well as the HDB-2000MIR1080. n

An enterprise system can mean different things to different people. In this instance we are defining an enterprise system

as maintaining central control over an entire access control system, whilst each local facility maintains independent control of its individual operations. Its power gives system administrators at the main facility the ability to configure and monitor all locations from that single site. It also allows them to simultaneously monitor alarms from multiple facilities from one convenient workstation. Whether your organisation consists of a few facilities that are locally dispersed or many that span the globe, an enterprise solution scales as your company grows.

The main factor to keep in mind when you begin to plan the migration to an enterprise access control solution is preparation. you need to know what resources are available to you, who the key players are to help you in this process and how to develop a

solid plan to get the system up and running successfully. When migrating to an enterprise system, you will want to avoid the following pitfalls:

• Failure to define the operational paradigm• Failure to define performance

and scalability expectations• Poor co-ordination between

multiple vendors• Moving data without a plan• Poor preparation for the

unknown

Defining the “operational paradigm”Often organisations get tripped up because they don’t define the operational paradigm. More simply put, they fail to address the administrative processes, reporting and monitoring and control experiences. The migration to an enterprise system provides the opportunity to review and clean up databases, evaluate your old models and technology and see where improvements or

replacements can come in. The perfect time to define existing pain points is at the beginning of the process, not at the end. Often, this process affords the system owner an opportunity to review and clean up their existing database, which has more than likely been subjected to years of management by different people and groups.

Among the questions to ask are: what reports can you take advantage of? What should be updated? With the increased capabilities for alarm monitoring, how will you incorporate that into your workflow? An equally important administrative process is re-evaluating your naming conventions. With an enterprise system, you now have multiple buildings to monitor, each of them with its own front door. How do you distinguish one from another under your new naming conventions, realising the importance of having all this in place prior to starting the migration?

It is also essential to streamline reporting before you begin this >

Building it up: an enterprise solution can maintain central control over a company’s entire access control system while each local facility controls its individual operations

The enterprise solution should allow users to simultaneously monitor alarms from multiple facilities from one workstation.

Page 36: In Security - May 2013

type of project. Currently, your organisation has information in multiple locations relating to people, places, policies and ideas. How much of this data do you retain, and how do you manage it?

One consideration is adopting an advanced reporting solution designed to harvest and organise your business information properly. Such tools help turn business intelligence into security intelligence through intuitive web-based interfaces that allow you to scrutinise the information without the need to print or review hard copies.

Setting expectationsThe second big step in conducting a successful migration is to define performance and scalability expectations. Understanding the volume that you are planning to put through your enterprise will allow for proper definition of the overall system architecture. After all, every

system has its limits, so proper analysis of input activity, whether from door state monitor or request to exit traffic, will assist with this process.

Co-ordinating multiple partiesIn most instances, the move to an enterprise system will involve co-ordination among multiple parties – departments, facilities, and vendors. It is crucial to clearly communicate with all of the internal and external groups involved, including key integrators, the IT department and others.

The integrators will be called in to install the various applications ranging from fire and security to CCTV, intrusion and visitor management. your IT team can assist with the move to a virtual environment and will monitor these needs during the process.

Creating a teamAs we’ve stated from the start, migrating successfully is all about

having a plan. And having a plan is all about setting up a team. Determine who will be on the team, who will set up the plan to migrate data from your existing access control systems to the enterprise solution, and who will maintain the system and data once it’s up and running.

Ideally, the team should involve human resources, security operations, IT and server management. Once you create the team, assign task owners. This information should be clearly documented in a master schedule which also defines the deliverables for each team member. Deliverables will cover import and export requirements, report requirements and data owners.

Doing this will allow you to determine any issues that may arise, which can be stored separately until identified and an import solution is put into place to properly handle the update of personnel and credentials.

Preparing for the unknownThe final issue to address is preparing for the unexpected. Not easy, of course, but critical nonetheless if the desired outcome is a successful migration. By fully understanding the system and everything surrounding it, you are better prepared for potential problems. So be aware of firewalls, virus protection, malware, backups, data sources, desktop policies, upgrade policies and the like. The pre-audit of all hardware components will help determine a part of this. So have a plan in place and know what details you want to include ahead of time.

Now you are ready to proceed with your migration, knowing you have the tools in place to launch your project and see it through to completion.

Access control systems have found their place in a wide range of sectors, helping to monitor, control and

restrict the movements of people, assets and vehicles in order to ensure maximum security of a site. Such systems are now being successfully used in all kinds of buildings, whether in the retail industry, the healthcare sector, gyms, offices or schools. But because of fast-moving technological developments, these systems can now also be seamlessly integrated with a number of other systems such as time management systems, fire roll call software and building energy management systems. The scope of access control technology is far reaching.

“Access control systems provide reliable and cost-effective solutions to the problem of security while still offering flexibility of entry and exit to authorised personnel and visitors,” explained Mike Sussman, Chairman of the BSIA’s Access Control section. “The technology also works well when integrated with other systems such as physical security equipment and CCTV, to provide that extra layer of protection.”

Integrating with IPToday, it is becoming more common practice for a site’s access control system to utilise the customer’s existing network – such as their wide area network (WAN) or local area network (LAN) – in order to provide a communications path between the access controllers and the software. The channel created therefore allows for integration with other systems in place – such as CCTV and intruder alarms – in order to form what is often referred to as a “security management system”. This brings together the management of all aspects of an organisation’s security, creating a more streamlined and comprehensive security plan.

Traditionally, many security systems have been linked to remote monitoring centres using modem-type devices, which are connected to a telephone line in order to exchange information. The utilisation of a network can introduce many benefits, such as substantial financial savings in contrast to the cost of dial-up solutions. The introduction of IP technology can also significantly improve the quality of information being sent and the amount of time required to connect and exchange this information. This can be extremely beneficial in determining whether a security threat has been detected, such as an intruder attempting to access a forbidden area. The access control system can flag up this intrusion, and if integrated with other technology – such as CCTV – images can then be sent to personnel, either locally or at a receiving centre – so they may assess the situation and react accordingly.

While generally the use of IP technology can create a more efficient security system, the decision to utilise IP systems does require careful consideration. Such considerations include a site’s infrastructure. There are two

main areas of IP use – the internal network communication and the external communication. Within a facility, communication may be created through an existing IP network, an IP network dedicated to the security system, or it could be installed as a directly wired security system. Communication over the external systems from the transmission equipment to a remote monitoring location may also utilise IP, but this will most likely be hired from other providers.

Having an understanding of your bandwidth requirements is also important, as these specifications can vary depending on the security system. Access control systems tend to only send small amount of data and do not require much bandwidth, but if you were looking for this to be integrated with CCTV – to provide images of who is trying to access an area to identify intruders – the bandwidth requirements can be considerably more due to the amount of data being sent through the system.

For a full list of considerations when choosing an IP solution, download the BSIA’s free guide: http://www.bsia.co.uk/web_images/publications/Form_211.pdf

IP in action So how does IP work in conjunction with access control? Access control systems can come in various different forms, such as a speed gate, turnstile or door. Identification devices can also vary, including PIN pads, biometric readers or smart cards. In an office environment, for example, if an employee swipes their identification card in order to access the building, this information can be shared with time and attendance systems in place via the IP technology in order to make a record of what time an employee has arrived in the building.

To put this all into perspective, we can look to an international example provided from BSIA member company CEM systems. Farmers Trading Company in New Zealand was looking for a highly reliable, flexible and fully integrated security system with the potential to be used across a number of sites. CEM met this requirement, providing a fully integrated access control, alarm processing and photo badging security management system.

One particular specification of Farmers was that they wanted a quality IP security management system that could be installed with maximum efficiency, subsequently minimising the requirement for cabling and power supplies. As a result, a selection of CEM two-door controllers and IP card readers were installed. The card readers were installed on critical doors throughout the Farmers department store, which were connected via IP addresses to Farmers’ secure and dedicated corporate IP network. This meant that a record could be kept of all staff accessing specific areas, and any unauthorised access attempts could also be monitored and recorded. This can be beneficial in terms of logging staff attendance, but also translating this information to payroll software for increased accuracy.

Another BSIA member utilised IP technology at Queen Mary, University of London in order to provide a facility wide access control card solution, using just one card database to centralise administration. Queen Mary, University of London is one of the largest multi-campus colleges of the University of London, with more than 10,000 UK, European and international students attending four campuses.

Originally the colleges were run separately, with the University’s access control system consisting of several standalone systems supported by several smaller installation companies. This system had been used for 15 years with more than 100 readers functioning over two main systems.

A BSIA member studied the system’s requirements in depth and learned about the campus’ goals. They provided a complete upgrade which included the installation of an access control and alarm monitoring system to communicate between the server/client PC’s and intelligent door controllers over the University’s existing LAN/WAN infrastructure. The new IP access control system allowed the university to use a single card that would work across all campuses and control the system

from a central point. As a result, approximately 20,000 cardholders gain access through proximity readers.

Sourcing a supplier It can often be beneficial to undergo a risk assessment of your organisation in order to determine the level of security required for an area, and the best systems to install. Professional security consultancies can help with this, having an understanding of the systems that will best fit your building. The most important aspect of choosing any kind of security solution, however, is that you choose from a reputable supplier who meets with the relevant British and European standards. Members of the BSIA’s Access Control section have been lending their expertise to a wide range of customers over the years, and have extensive knowledge of IP systems. They are inspected to high quality standards and are committed to best practice.

Established in France in 1898, Michelin, the international giants of tyre manufacturing, holds forefront

positions in every tyre market as well as in travel-related services. It is now one of the two largest tyre manufacturers in the world. With 72 production facilities in 19 countries, its Dundee factory has been operating for nearly 40 years. Michelin protect this site with a networked access control system from UK market leaders, Paxton.

As the only tyre factory in Scotland, and one of two main Michelin factories in the UK, Michelin in Dundee has developed a rapid production rate, producing between six & seven million car tyres a year. Mike Donald, Senior Risk Manager, is responsible for the prevention of risk to the Michelin environment at the Dundee factory. “Security is very important to Michelin,” he said. “We need to manage the flow of staff and visitors to our

factory as well as secure Michelin information. Over the years we have successfully invented and launched the radial tyre, among other breakthroughs. These secret recipes are something unique to our company. Michelin’s “know-how” is the sort of technology worth protecting.”

The Michelin factory at Dundee is a large-scale site with more than 800 employees working a 24-hour industrial shift pattern, across 22 different buildings. Mike wanted a security system to control access to the main gates and other core buildings. He called in Richard McCredie from Midlands Electrical Fire and Security Ltd who specified Net2, Paxton’s electronic access control system.

Richard said: “Michelin wanted to secure their main gates and areas they didn’t want the public to gain access to. This included their factory, Michelin training school, main IT room and private offices. Once Net2 was installed and they saw how simple it was to use, the decision was

made to extend the system to more doors around the site.”

Richard fitted Paxton’s Metal readers to the main turnstile gates at the entrance of the site. Now, when visitors arrive at the manned reception desk they are given a smart ID/access card in one, branded with the Michelin logo. Michelin use the Card Designer program in the Net2 software to design different cards for staff and guests alike.

Additionally, some visitors require regular vehicle access to deliver supplies and material for making the tyres. These visitors simply keep their ID/access cards in their vehicles and present them to the Metal readers on the main gates as they approach the entrance for access. Michelin have a security team, a permanent presence at the main gates who manage access rights in the Net2 software for staff and visitors.

Mike said: “The security team had no problems learning Net2. The software is very intuitive and they >

Michelin needed a high performance access control system to protect its facilities and staff

42 I May 2013 I IN SECURITy

picked it up really easily. It’s a great solution for us as now we are able to use the reports to monitor staff and guest access around the site.”

Michelin are very happy with the Net2 system. Using a cost-effective system like Net2 has meant Michelin can start out by securing access to the core areas of their business and expand accordingly, as budget becomes available. All Net2 access control units are designed to control one door. This one-door philosophy also works well for Michelin as it means doors can be added to the system quickly and easily when needed.

“We have a lot of risks to control with the budget given, but Net2 allows us to do this efficiently,” said Mike. “It helps us to protect our people and our brand. As the Michelin ‘know-how’ is globally of interest to competitors, the Net2 system helps us protect our brand and what we do here. It’s a great solution for Michelin.”

“Once Net2 was installed and they saw how simple it was to use, the decision was made to extend the

system to more doors around the site”

Over the last ten years, security has become increasingly vital in schools to protect students, staff and assets, while also allowing students to move freely around a site. In 2009, Perth & Kinross Council began a five year phased replacement of their initial security system, switching out their basic standalone access control with Net2, Paxton’s market-leading networked security system. The five-year security project has been based on guidelines from the Cullen report, an inquiry into the safety of children in schools following the Dunblane tragedy in March, 1996.

Perth & Kinross Council enlisted the help of local installation company, Scottish Communications, to help them with the project and install their new access control system. Stuart Leslie, Sales Engineer for Scottish Communications, said: “Perth & Kinross council needed a networked security solution to provide and control access to schools across the county that could be managed from their head offices in Perth. Paxton’s Net2 system met the requirements perfectly and provided a cost effective solution, so important in the education sector.”

Scottish Communications fitted Net2 plus single door access control units with Net2 Pro software to secure the main doors to 32 schools, 11 private council offices and Perth’s main library in the town centre. Sites include the Perth Academy, Perth High School, Oakbank and Viewlands Primary School. Net2 plus, Paxton’s most powerful control unit,

comes with onboard TCP/IP and plugs directly into the network. Perth and Kinross use Net2 plus to connect all the schools and council buildings to one network and control the system centrally from the council’s head office.

Perth & Kinross Council is very happy with the way the Net2 system is working. Having centralised control is a huge bonus, giving them an additional layer of control and flexibility to manage the system round the clock. Scott Bruce, Facilities Management Officer at the council, said: “The Net2 system looks simple and is simple to use, but there’s a level of complexity behind it which meets our needs for more advanced security. It’s easy to learn, meaning that we can solve any issues quickly, rarely have to ask for help and save money on maintenance!” n
