The Riviera Maya is without doubt oneof the most paradise like destinationsin the world, offering not only aunique nature but also the magic ofthe Mayan culture combined withan excellent tourism infrastructureand the hospitality of the people.

Ing. Darío Flota, Director of the Riviera’sTourism Promotion Borrad, announced thatthe Riviera Maya was selected one of the 10best destinations in Mexico for conventionsand conferences (10 Top Destinations forMeetings Mexico 2005).

Renato Sandoval Martín, Director of the“Orange Grupo Editorial”, informed that“this selection was based on criteria thatgrade things like the destination’s TourismPromotion Board, the number of hotels,guest rooms and conference rooms, thetourism service providers, the airport, com-munication means, tourist attractions,

restaurants and entertainmentcenters as well as golf courses,spas, the safety of the destina-tion, the quality of services andthe attention to the visitoramong others”.

In addition, at the end of theyear 2005, the Riviera Mayawas selected one of the 10 best

international destinations, as the secondbest among these, by the important NorthAmerican travel agent Carlson Wagon Lit.

These awards and acknowledgements areadded to the already extensive list thatrecognizes the Riviera Maya. This paradisewas selected “the” destination 2006 bythe important American Travel & Leisuremagazine and “the best destination” byApple Vacation (in 2001, 2003, and 2005)and by Travel Weekly (in 2004 and 2005). Inaddition, the important Canadian touroperator Itravel2000 acknowledged theRiviera Maya as the premier destination oftheir clients during 2004.

La Riviera Maya es definitivamenteuno de los destinos más paradisíacosdel mundo, ofreciendo no solo unpaisaje único sino también la magiade la cultura maya en combinaciónde una excelente infraestructuraturística y la hospitalidad de la gente.

El Ing. Darío Flota, director del Fideicomiso dela Riviera comunicó que la Riviera Maya fueseleccionada como uno de los 10 mejoresdestinos de México para llevar a caboconvenciones y congresos (10 Top Destinationsfor Meetings México 2005).

Renato Sandoval Martín, director de OrangeGrupo Editorial informó que “esta selección sebasó en criterios que califican puntos como elFideicomiso de Promoción del destino, elnúmero de hoteles, habitaciones y salones, losprestadores de servicios turísticos, el aeropuerto,las vías de comunicación, los atractivos turísti-cos, los restaurantes y centros de entrete-nimiento además de loscampos de golf, spas, laseguridad del destino, la calidaden los servicios y la atención alvisitante entre otros”.

Por otro lado, a finales delaño 2005 la Riviera Mayatambién fue seleccionadacomo uno de los 10 mejoresdestinos internacionales, quedando ensegundo lugar dentro de la selección porparte de la importante agencia de viajesnorte americana Carlson Wagon Lit.

Estos premios y reconocimientos se suman a laya extensa lista en la que la Riviera Maya esreconocida. Este paraíso fue seleccionado como“el” destino para visitar en el 2006 por la impor-tante revista americana de Travel & Leisure ocomo mejor destino por Apple Vacation (en losaños 2001, 2003, y 2005) y por Travel Weekly(en el año 2004 y 2005). Así mismo, el impor-tante tour operador canadiense Itravel2000reconoció a la Riviera Maya como primer destinode sus clientes en el año 2004.

LIFE IN THE BEGINNINGS OFPLAYA DEL CARMEN

We chatted with Don JacintoAguilar Quiam, a key personality inPlaya del Carmen´s history andamazing deve-lopment, and his talestarts like this: “My grandparents,José Quiam Chan and JuanitaLópez, founded Playa del Carmen.They left Carrillo Puerto during thecaste wars, headed to Vigia Chicoand from there crossed over toCozumel. Later they decided to set-tle here, even though it was bare,but they liked it and started tobring their family members and itstarted to grow”.

This small fishing community keptitself busy with their job obliga-tions. Don Jacinto tells us how lifewas for children: “We all went tothe only school around: NiñosHeroes. We were in school by 8 amand out by noon and would headhome to have lunch and to collect

LA VIDA EN LOS INICIOS DEPLAYA DEL CARMEN

Platicamos con don Jacinto AguilarQuiam, pieza clave en la historia dePlaya del Carmen y su sorprendentedesarrollo, quien comienza así su relato:“Los fundadores de Playa del Carmenfueron mis abuelos, José Quiam Chan yJuanita López; ellos salieron de CarrilloPuerto cuando la guerra de castas;salieron a Vigía Chico y de ahí cruzarona Cozumel, luego vinieron para acá,aunque no había nada pero les gustó yasí fueron trayendo a sus otros fami-liares y fue creciendo”.

La pequeña comunidad de pescadoresse dedicaba principalmente a sus activi-dades de trabajo; para los niños, la vidaera como nos platica Don Jacinto:“Íbamos a la escuela primaria ´NiñosHéroes´ que era la única que había…

entrábamos a las 8 de la mañana ysalíamos a las 12 del día, de ahí te ibasa la casa, comías y te ibas a ´leñar´ paravender a la cooperativa chiclera de Playadel Carmen, por cada bulto de leña nospagaban de 20 a 30 centavos, luego alas 3:00 de la tarde nos tocaban la cam-pana y ahí vamos otra vez de regreso ala escuela hasta las 5:00 y el poquito deluz que quedaba nos íbamos a jugar a laplaya y ya a las 6:00 que oscurecía yaestábamos acostados.”

Don Jacinto platica que el desarrollocomenzó cerca del año 1965, cuandollegó la primera carretera, (actualmentela Avenida Juárez) la cual recorría desdePuerto Juárez hasta Puerto Morelos y deahí a Playa del Carmen.

A través de esta carretera, llegabancamiones con mercancía para mandarpor barco a Cozumel. Fue entoncescuando se agilizó el flujo de gente ycomercio hacia la isla, llegando así cadavez más gente a Playa del Carmen.

En 1974, se formó el Sindicato deTaxistas, pues el turismo venía deCozumel hacia Tulum y la gente dePlaya comenzó a pedir automóviles paratransportar turistas, lo cual se logró éste

Following the Conquest (1518-1519), the ancient port of Xamanháand adjacent cities were abandonedfor many centuries until the year of1902, when then President PorfirioDíaz officially declared an extensionof 50,000 km2 of land as theQuintana Roo Federal Territory.

In those years Playa del Carmenwas a small fishermen´s village withrustic living and development con-ditions. The main commercial acti-vities were fishing, agriculture, chi-

Después de la conquista (1518-1519), elantiguo puerto de Xamanhá y sus zonasaledañas, quedaron deshabitadas porvarios siglos hasta que en el año de1902, el presidente Porfirio Díaz decretóoficialmente al Territorio Federal deQuintana Roo, con una extensión de50,000 km2.

En ese entonces, Playa del Carmen erauna pequeña aldea de pescadores conrústicas condiciones de vida y desarrollo,

Don Jacinto tells that real develop-ment started the year of 1965when the first road was built (nowknown as Avenida Juarez) whichran from Puerto Juarez to PuertoMorelos and from there to Playa delCarmen.

Trucks filled with merchandise toship to Cozumel traveled throughthis road. This is when the flow ofpeople and commerce to the islandgrew and brought more peopleto Playa.

In 1974 the Taxi Union was formedsince tourism was flowing betweenCozumel and Tulúm and Playalocals started requesting cars totransport tourists. The first Secre-tary General was Mr. EduardoArcila Patrón.

The first diner was established asthe number of truck drivers thatpassed thru Playa grew, it wascalled ¨La Catolica¨, located onJuarez Avenue between 5th Aveand the beach and its owner wasDon Jacinto´s father Don SusanoAguilar. The menu consisted prima-rily of fish, deer, pheasant, boar andchachalacas. The first market ope-ned right after, located on the placewhere now the ADO terminalstands, owned by Don EstebanQuiam López, it was called “Funda-dores” and was a tortillería, bakeryand small market.

Thanks to this rapid growth, thefirst hotel was opened byProfessor Lucio Baro Kantún Chiand was called “La Playense”,located on Juarez Ave. between2nd and 4tht St. This hotel startedoff with a few palapas and laterbecame a building. The next hotelthat opened was owned byProfessor Francisco Cardoso and isstill standing on the corner ofJuarez and 10th Ave.

Later on, the Hotel Balam-Háappeared, and close to the Cozu-mel pier the Hotel Molcas wasbuilt by Trino Molina on 1974.Both these hotels can be classifiedas the first to cater to qualitytourism since they had betterinstallations and beach access.

Back then, what we now know asPlayacar was a coconut farm thatwas sold by its owner, Don RománQuiam López, for $50,000 pesos.

On 1974, Fernando BarbachanoHerrero built the first concretebuilding in what now is Playacar.It housed a bus station, customsoffices, public services, a res-taurant and two stores south ofthe pier.

Al aumentar el número de camionerosque pasaban por Playa, surge la primeralonchería llamada “La Católica”, ubica-da en la Av. Juárez entre la 5ta. Av. y elmar; propiedad de Don Susano Aguilar(padre de don Jacinto) y donde seofrecía principalmente pescado, vena-do, faisán, jabalí y chachalacas. Luegovino la primer “tiendita”, ubicada endonde actualmente está la terminal delADO (Av. Juárez con 5ta. Av.) y que erapropiedad de Don Esteban QuiamLópez, llamada “Fundadores”, la cualfuncionaba como tortillería, panadería ymini-super.

Con este crecimiento, surgió también elprimer hotel, propiedad del ProfesorLucio Baro Kantún Chi, llamado “LaPlayense” ubicado en la Av. Juárezentre las Calles 2 y 4; el cual empezócon unas sencillas palapas y poco apoco se convirtió en edificio. El siguientehotel que se construyó fue la “PosadaLili” propiedad del Profesor FranciscoCardoso y permanece en la esquina dela Av. Juárez y Av. 10

Más adelante, surgieron el Hotel Balam-Há (donde hoy se encuentra el hotelContinental Plaza) y en la zona delmuelle hacia Cozumel, el Hotel Molcas,edificado en 1974 por Trino Molina.Estos dos hoteles se pueden clasificarcomo los primeros para turismo de ca-tegoría, pues tenían mejores instala-ciones y salida hacia la playa.

Lo que hoy conocemos como Playacar,era en esos tiempos un rancho cocotero,el cual entre los años de 1968 y 1969, fuevendido por su propietario Don RománQuiam López en $50,000 pesos.

la gente local ubicaba sus viviendas pordescripciones externas o contando elnúmero de “cuadras” que caminaban.

LOS PRIMERIOS MEDIOS IMPRESOS

En 1987 se publicó la primera revistalocal llamada “Revista de Playa” dirigidapor Enrique Sotres, escrita a mano y deimpresión casera en sus primeras edi-ciones. En marzo de 1991, aparece elprimer periódico de Playa llamado“Coral Negro” fundado por SantiagoÁvila Quiñones, quien es hasta la actua-lidad su director general.

LUZ ELÉCTRICA Y AGUA POTABLE

Cuenta don Jacinto con respecto alagua potable en Playa del Carmen: “Loprimero que tuvimos no era aguapotable en sí, pues más bien era uncenote con un tubo galvanizado y ladistribución eran unos PVC que llega-ban a las casas, pero el agua salía ama-rilla los primeros chorros, porque se lle-naba del óxido del tubo; así que prefe-ríamos tomar agua de los pozos quenosotros hacíamos, antes que tomar esaagua del tubo.”

La energía eléctrica llegó a Playa delCarmen hasta la década de los años 70,antes los habitantes se alumbrabancon quinqués.

On 1987 the first local magazinewas published by Enrique Sotresand was called “Revista de Playa”.Its first editions were hand-writtenand home printed. On 1991 thefirst newspaper appeared, the¨Coral Negro¨, founded by SantiagoAvila Quiñones, whom still remainsat its helm.

ELECTRICITY AND RUNNING WATER

What Don Jacinto has to say aboutrunning water in Playa: “The firstwater we had wasn´t really potablebecause it was a tube running froma cenote distributed by PVCs to thehouses. The first spouts of waterwere always yellow because the tubewould rust. So we just preferredto drink water from the wellswe made”.

Electricity came to Playa until thedecade of the seventies. Beforethat the locals would light theirway with oil lamps they called“brujitos”. These were basicallycrystal tubes filled with petro-leum, sealed with a tap and in themiddle a piece of cloth that wouldget soaked with oil and burna flame.

El 28 de Julio de 1993 por Decreto delGobierno del Estado se crea el munici-pio de Solidaridad que comprende elterritorio de la parte continental quepertenecía al municipio de Cozumel.Esteban Quiam López fue el primercomisariado ejidal de Playa del Carmen,trabajó de manera entusiasta por eldesarrollo del lugar; colaboró en eltrazado las calles, impulsó la apertura dela primera panadería y el primer cine dellugar. En reconocimiento a su labor, lasfamilias fundadoras de Playa, acordarondarle el honroso nombramiento de“El Fundador”.

Hoy en día, la integración de losnativos de Playa del Carmen con gentede diferentes regiones del país confor-ma una sociedad única y diversa,abierta, siempre en transformaciónhospitalaria y poseedora de unavitalidad acostumbrada a enfrentarretos que se vuelven metas.

Las raíces de sus habitantes, amplias yprofundas, provienen de una culturaque azora al mundo por su legadoastronómico, matemático, arquitectóni-co y urbanístico. La diosa de la Luna y lafertilidad, Ixch’eel, era objeto de vene-ración; lo cual reafirma que Playa delCarmen es tierra fértil.

On July 28th, 1993 the Municipalityof Solidaridad is declared by theFederal Government and applies tothe continental territory that wasonce part of Cozumel. EstebanQuiam López was the first commonland commissary of Playa delCarmen. He enthusiastically workedfor the development of the towncollaborating in the tracing of newstreets, promoting the opening ofthe first bakery and the first cine-ma. In recognition of his work, thefounding families of Playa decidedto honor him with the title of“The Founder”.

Nowadays, the integration of Playanatives with people of diverse back-grounds has created a unique anddiverse society that is open, alwaystransforming itself, hospitable and thatpossesses a vitality accustomed to facingchallenges that become goals.

It´s locals´ roots, wide and deep, areinherited from a culture that treasuresthe world for its astronomic, mathe-matic, architectonic and urban legacy.Ixch´eel, the Mayan goddess of themoon and fertility, was an adoredbeing, reaffirming that Playa is afertile land.

LA LLEGADA DEL ORDEN

En el año de 1975, es nombradoGermán García Padilla como primerPresidente Municipal de Playa delCarmen, teniendo sus oficinas en lo quees hoy la Policía Turística (Av, Juárezentre Calles 20 y 15). En ese entonces,se hicieron votaciones y hubo un re-gistro de 80 votos, lo cual era en prome-dio el número total de habitantes.

Don Jacinto Aguilar, fue el primerDelegado Municipal y platica lo si-guiente: “Yo me encargaba de hacer lode registro civil, lo de la oficina de catas-tro, porque dábamos terrenos tambiéno por ejemplo, venía un comandante deCozumel con dos tres policías y yo teníaque ser juez calificador, para cuandohabía presos, que si uno que se embo-rrachó, otro que se peleó, ya ahí ellos lemetían una multa de 30-40 pesos ledaba su recibo, le leíamos la cartilla deque no lo volviera a hacer y todo eso.”

LAS PRIMERAS CALLES

La famosa y glamorosa 5ta. Avenida fueabierta por primera vez en el año de1976, cuando no era más que un caminocerrado por grandes piedras que huboque romper y excavar para llenarla concascajo, pues era camino de terracería. Elcosto por abrir dicha calle fue de $800, delos cuales el 50% fue donado por elpueblo y el otro 50% otorgado por elAyuntamiento de Cozumel.

Del año 1975 al año 1984, durante los9 años que Don Jacinto Aguilar fungiócomo delegado municipal, se llevó acabo la apertura de 39 calles en Playadel Carmen. Los nombres de las callesfueron designados por el Gobierno deChetumal, ya que en Playa, la única calleque existía (hoy la Av. Juárez) era llama-da simplemente “carretera” y lo demáseran sólo brechas de tierra sin nombre,

El símbolo del municipio está tomadode un disco monolítico maya. Lacenefa está compuesta por dos re-presentaciones de “KUKULKAN”(Serpiente emplumada de esta cul-tura) una ascendente y otra quedesciende. The municipal symbol is extract-ed from a Mayan monolith. Thefrieze is made up of two repre-sentations of “Kukulcan” (fea-thered serpent), one ascendingand one descending. In the middle,lower left part is Cobá andTulúm. The contour of the circleis a frieze with alternating Mayanglyphs of the number eight,allusive to being the eight townof the State.

WHEN ORDER WAS MADE

On 1975, Germán García Padilla ismade first Municipal President ofPlaya del Carmen, with offices inwhat now is the Tourism Policebuilding. They held a public voteand the count was of 80 ballots,which was the average number ofcitizens at the time.

Don Jacinto Aguilar was the firstMunicipal Delegate and as hereminisces: “I was in charge of thecivil registry and the cadasteroffice, because we also gave awayland or for example, if a Com-mander from Cozumel came with2 or 3 policemen I had to be thequalifying judge for when therewere priso-ners, a drunk man, abrawl and we had to give them afine of 30 or 40 pesos. I wouldgive them a receipt, read themtheir rights and so forth”.

THE FIRST STREETS

The famous and glamorous 5thAvenue was inaugurated on1976 when i t was no morethan a road closed off by hugerocks that had to be brokendown and excava-ted to f i l lwith dirt. I t cost $800 pesos toopen the road, 50% was dona-ted by the town and the restby Cozumel.

From 1975 to 1984, during thenine years that Don Jacinto wasin the government, 39 streetswere opened. The name ofthese streets were designatedby the Chetumal government,since in Playa the only streetthat ex is ted ( Juarez Avenue)was simply called “the road”,and the rest were only strips ofdirt with no name. Locals loca-ted their houses by externaldescriptions or by counting thenumber of blocks they walked.

parte del Cemefi (Centro Mexicanopara la Filantropía), estructuraintegrada por más de 550 organi-zaciones miembro y con el respaldode AliaRSE (Alianza por la Respon-sabilidad Social Empresarial en Mé-xico) integrada por Aval, Cemefi,Concamin, Confederación USEM,Consejo Coordinador Empresarial,Coparmex, e Impulsa, el recono-cimiento como Empresa Social-mente Responsable dentro del se-lecto grupo de empresas que reci-ben este distintivo que tiene 6 añosde antigüedad.

• En el 2005 su programa de “reor-denamiento Urbano de CiudadChemuyil” fue distinguido como unade las mejores prácticas empresarialesen la categoría de vinculación con lacomunidad por sus esfuerzos en lalimpieza de la localidad de poco másde 250 familias ubicada a 5 kilóme-tros del parque, sus programas deeducación formal e informal paraniños y adultos, promoción de la cul-tura y la seguridad. Destaca particu-larmente la inauguración de la PlazaComunitaria el pasado 7 de febrero,ubicada en el Centro de DesarrolloComunitario La Ceiba, lugar donde elparque junto con el Instituto Estatalde la Educación para los Adultos(INAH) promoverán la educación parauna mejor calidad de vida y unamejora en el trabajo de laspersonas de la comu-nidad y de Xel-Há.

• Apoyo y financia-miento de la investi-gación del caracolrosa (strombus gigas)con el Centro de Investigación y deEstudios Avanzados del InstitutoPolitécnico Nacional (Cinvestav) deMérida, desarrollando técnicas parala conservación de este preciadorecurso natural y cultural de laregión caribeña de México ylas Antillas.

• Atención gratuita a más de 34 milniños y maestros de escuelaspúblicas de Quintana Roo en activi-dades de Educación Ambientaldesde 1999.

• El parque Xel-Há cuenta con elModelo de Equidad de Génerootorgado por el Instituto Nacionalde las Mujeres que asegura igual-dad de oportunidades para hom-bres y mujeres tanto para la con-tratación como para la promoción ycapacitaciones internas y evita elacoso sexual.
