Why Global Learning?

To mark Universal Children’s Day, 20 November 2013, research with 4000 children aged 8-12 highlighted: • 73% of children in the UK are aware of major global

issues;• 6 in 10 children are worried about global issues;• 83% of children say they feel positive about what lies

What is GLP-W?

• A national programme• Funded by the Department for International Development• Similar programmes in England and Scotland• Endorsed by the Welsh Government• For primary, secondary and special schools• For pupils in Key Stages 2 and 3• Aim to work with 50% of schools in Wales by July 2017

Lead Schools

Each Lead School joins GLP-Wales for a three year period to:

• Develop global learning in their own school. • Take a leading role to share and develop good practice

with other schools in their area.

In the pilot phase, ten lead schools; 5 secondary, 4 primary and one special school.

From September 2014, a further 18 lead schools will be selected and trained.

• Have highly effective practice and expertise in global citizenship;

• Performance on national measures such as secondary school banding;

• Nomination by partners and stakeholders;• External recognition;• Capacity to build local networks of schools, to share and

develop good practice and support local school improvement.

What do we have to do?

The expectation is that as a lead school you will:• nominate a GLP-W Coordinator;• identify a named representative on the Senior Leadership

Team;• apply the GLP-W curriculum guidance to meet the needs of

your school;• be willing to try out new practices and resources; • recruit local network schools for each cycle of the

programme; and • provide advice and support on global learning to local

network schools.

What support is available?Lead Schools will be supported to become a

hub for global learning:

• Free two day training for two members of staff; • Free CPD from GLP-W Partners to equip your staff with the

curriculum knowledge, pedagogy and leadership skills needed to lead change in your school and in your network schools;

• Access to high quality classroom materials;

What support is available?

• Opportunities for accreditation for your school’s GLP-W coordinator and one other member of staff as a Lead Practitioner;

• Recognition for the school as a ‘Centre of Excellence’;• High quality support from the GLP-W team and

partners; • Annual payments to enable the school to have capacity

to support a local network.
