From Our President!Dear Friends of Rescue,

It has been over three months since our dear friend and GRRCNY‘s presi-dent Carol Allen, suddenly passed away on May 30th while watering her flowers at the family camp on the St. Lawrence River.

There is a deep void in the golden community with Carol’s passing. She was very generous with her knowledge and experience, especially when it came to golden retrievers and rescue. She was my mentor, a leader, a col-league and most of all a dear friend. It seems at times she was preparing for the day when we would have to “go it alone.” As I told the rescue board, we can never walk in her shoes but we can strive to follow in her footsteps. This is not my first president’s message, in September 2005, I wrote about the National Rescue Committee (NRC) of the Golden Retriever Club of America led by Chairperson Carol Allen, working with 105 Golden Re-triever Rescues across the US, to care for goldens displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Last year Carol stepped down as chair of the NRC/GRCA, after serving nearly 14 years.

Carol was one of the founding members of the Golden Retriever Rescue of Central New York along with Marcia Martin, Deb Wood, Sallie Lennox and Janice Brown.

In 2009, Carol received GRCA’s Vern Bower Humanitarian Award for ex-emplary contributions to the Golden Retriever, with the prerequisite being a selfless devotion to our breed. In 2015 Carol was again recognized by the GRCA, receiving the Annual Service Award for extraordinary and meritorious service to the Golden Retriever Club of America, Inc. and the Starfish Award for outstanding contributions to the rescue of Golden Re-trievers and Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue recently awarded Carol the Golden Spirit Award.

I can imagine the joyous reunion at the Rainbow Bridge with Carol and all the goldens she rescued and those she called family. “Carol, throw a ball to Toby for me!”

Golden Retriever Rescue of Central New York

Well, here we are ……Sallie Lennox has been amazing, despite all she has been through, taking on both roles of intake and adop-tion coordination. Lori Coon has taken a more active role on our “Intake Team.” and was also elected as Vice President at the recent board meeting. Cindy Massicci, Kristen Monroe and Rose Lang have really stepped up as many of their tasks interacted with Carol and now we need to do things different. Mary McKellar, Carol and I were working on the new website and Mary was able to complete the website in August and we published. Take a look, I think it looks great!

This message ends with you……….If you have ever adopted a golden retriever from GRRCNY and whether your furry family crossed the rainbow bridge or is sitting next to you, you know the love and loyalty a golden brings. Making adoption possible, literally “takes a village”, from the intake, foster, and adoption coordination, to transportation, financial management , marketing/communication including websites and newsletters, managing events, data management, training and the list goes on. As with many organizations now days, these tasks are left to the few tireless folks that believe in GRRCNY’s vision “dedicated to rescu-ing and rehoming purebred Golden Retrievers in Central New York.” I’m sure you believe in the GRRCNY vision too. We need you. If you can help in any capacity and would like to know more, write me at grrcny@lightlink.

PAWS UP! Janet Gray

Presdient’s Message Continued from page 2

Foster Homes Are Needed! While our Intake numbers remain low, we need Foster Homes to be on stand-by and willing to take on the challenges of dogs in need of evaluation, training and the medical attention that GRRCNY regularly provides. While use of a particular foster home may not be frequent, often our ability to accept a dog depends on the quick availability of a foster home, and seasonal availability varies. With a “pool” of foster homes, our acceptance of a dog can be assured and quicker. For information on becoming a foster home, please contact Lori Coon, [email protected] or Janet Gray, [email protected]

Question: I’m so worried about ticks and lyme disease with my goldens, but don’t know where to turn for information.

Answer: There is a lot of information about Lyme Disease in Canines and here are some helpful informational resources.

According to the Companion Animal Parasitic Council, a higher than normal activ-ity of transmission of Lyme disease is predicted in a few states, one of them New York. For their website and a map of the “Lyme disease target areas”, go to:http://www.petsandparasites.org/expert-insights/risk-for-lyme-disease-in-dogs-continues-to-escalate-in-2016.Some factors contributing for the increase in incidents may be the less cold winters we’ve been experiencing and this could lead to higher survival rates of ticks. Another factor for an increase in dogs found positive for Lyme disease could be the result of on-going educational campaigns from veterinarians and consumer organizations.

A Synopsis of How Lyme Disease Spreads:Lyme disease, otherwise known as Borrelia burgdorferi, is spread by a few types of ticks. One of the most common ticks (carriers) is known as the black-legged tick (deer tick) and is prevalent in NYS. However, not all deer ticks are infected with the bacteria but can become infected when they feed on other infected small animals/rodents, particularly mice (key “res-ervoir hosts”): but only if they carry the pathogen in their blood. When a tick feeds on an infected key host, they can pass that infection on when they feed again. When the tick becomes an adult it commonly feeds on deer allowing it to obtain the nutrients necessary for reproduction. Thus, Deer are known as the “reproductive host” for ticks, providing the source for the ticks to produce eggs, which in turn produce more ticks. Here in Tompkins County we see an abundance of or, as some may say “an overpopulation” of deer. So, if you have deer or mice in your yard you may want to be especially vigilant for ticks.

Information on Prevention for Dogs and Humans. It’s important to protect your dogs and yourself from Lyme disease. Talk to your veterinarian about the type of prevention that’s right for your dog. The bullet points below are a “snippet” taken from the CDC website which offers a wealth of in-formation on Lyme disease and prevention in pets and humans:

RAINBOW BRIDGE CROSSINGS

Jim and Bev Ellison wrote, we lost our wonderful rescue Golden, Prince, last year. He was getting feeble but would still have times when he was a goofy Golden. We are so glad to have had him in our lives for a long time. He had some issues and the worst was his fear of wheelchairs. We are fairly sure that his previous owner was not nice to him. He could sense when a thun-der storm was coming and would pull out every electric cord he could find in the house. Still can’t figure out how he did not get electrocuted. His fear of storms finally got the best of him. I found him on the floor next to my bed after a severe thunder storm. I think he had a heart attack. Thank you for allowing us to provide his forever home. He is truly missed by our family.

Jakc and Michele Klara let us know, it seems like only a short time ago and not ten plus years ago that Sallie and Carol came to Rome and brought us “Luke.” Luke thrived and evolved into the perfect golden in our new home in Montana. It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that Luke crossed the Rainbow Bridge on July 4th, 2016. While camping, in the Yellowstone area, Luke suddenly became ill and was diagnosed by his veterinarian with a fast growing malignant tumor. Earlier he had enjoyed what would be his last boat ride and kissed his last trout before it was released back into the lake. Whenever we shed tears over our loss, we remember all of the joy he gave us and the fact he had a great life with us.

Luke Klara

Bryce Baird writes: we moved from Rochester to Lockport in April. Millie had turned 16 in March, and was literally an inspiration to Mary and me. I foolishly thought that because she lived longer than any golden could hope to live, I would not be so devastated, but of course, we both were. Millie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on June 8th, 2016. She was sweet and sassy, and above all, a fighter who never complained. We miss her everyday.

In Memory of Carol Allen

I am truly sorry to hear of Carol’s passing. She was a great lady and humanitarian. Todd Clickner She leaves a wonderful legacy of love and caring for people and goldens. Martha and Mike Lollis and Rosie Carol will be missed by all, especially all the wonderful goldens that have been blessed to have her involved in their lives. AVGRR What I have learned from Carol about people and dogs has been invaluable to me in so many aspects of my life and has made it possible for me to support the rescue programs in my assigned area, hopefully in the way Carol supported me. Barb Davis NRC/GRCA

I’m sure you already know how much Carol and her work meant to so many people and how much her gentle but firm influence has shaped our organization for the good. Her passing has been felt deeply by me, who considered her a mentor and friend, although I never had the good fortune to meet her in person. Barb Davis NRC/GRCA Know that Carol made a huge and indelible, but subtle and beautiful mark on the world that will continue on forever. Barb Davis NRC/GRCA Carol was an extraordinary woman who left a life time impression on all the humans who were blessed to know her and all the goldens she rescued. She has made this crazy world a better place by following her passions. We adopted our Gracie in 2003 and that was the beginning of a friendship we will treasure the rest of our lives. Cate and Gary Ingalls and family We all grieve with you....as we try to remember that heaven is a brighter place with Carol and our goldens. Robin Adams DVGRR We will forever remember the day Carol went down to Binghamton and brought our beloved Jake into our lives. Carol’s deep dedica-tion and compassion in rescuing goldens will never be forgotten. Callie and Tom Rogers Carol has brought so much golden love into our home and hearts, love that will live on as a tribute to her. Donna and Larry Williams She will always be remembered as she brought Dakota and then Harley into our lives. I feel so fortunate that our paths in life crossed. Her devotion to golden retrievers says so much about Carol’s humanity. And now when I look up at the stars each night and think of Dakota and Harley, I know Carol is with them and all is well. Veronica Guiry and Sam Nelson

I am so sorry to hear this. I am so grateful for my Abi that you both brought into my life. I have a wonderful picture of her holding Abi the first year we had her at the picnic. Prayers to all. Beth and Nolan Ruocco

True tragedy. She will be missed by so, so many. My love to all who loved her. All of our beloved Goldens gone before her will be waiting for her and will greet her smiling with wagging tails. Beth Shelmidine

What a terrible loss to the Golden Retriever Community, not only in NY, but nationally as well. Carol will be missed by so so many. She was a true champion for Rescue. Susan Campia

Carol Allen was one of those unique individuals one meets in life who gave her all to a cause she cared about - the welfare of our beloved Goldens. She united the Golden Rescue community through her chairmanship of the National Rescue Committee and I will never forget her 24/7 efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Golden world has lost a giant in our community. I will miss her leadership but even more, I will miss her personal friendship which I have treasured for many years. Joy Viola, Friends of Guisachan.

I was just reading Carol’s “Letter from the President” yesterday in the most recent issue of the Barquer. I will so miss her wonder-ful words of wisdom, but will be forever grateful for the two beautiful Goldens she and Sallie brought to us so many years ago. My thoughts and prayers to everyone at GRRCNY. Luise Yacono

I am totally stunned and speechless on this news, and so very deeply saddened. I am honored to say Carol was a dear friend whom Tom and I will miss greatly. The Golden community has truly lost a very special person and I am sure her welcome at the Bridge was

Letters from our Friends

The Messengers report that their father was recently admitted to a skilled nursing facil-ity. It hasn’t been an easy transition. We took Willow to meet him today. You can see the results in this picture. She has that effect on everyone who meets her. She made several patients and nurses day today. Such a sweetie!!

Willow and her grand-dad

Ben MCCutcheon

Lisa MCCutcheon reports Ben loves his nightly lap time on the couch with mom. He is busy chasing squirrels, chipmunks, and the occasional rabbit in his new home in Ithaca. Loves a short swim in our pool and has become good friends with our two cats. He is often found napping with them.

He volunteered with GRWNY last summer at the SPCA camp and hopes to help again soon.

• Check your pets for ticks daily, especially after they spend time outdoors.• If you find a tick on your dog, remove it right away.• Ask your veterinarian to conduct a tick check at each exam.• Talk to your veterinarian about tick-borne diseases in your area.• Reduce tick habitat in your yard(http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/prev/in_the_yard.html).• Talk with your veterinarian about using tick preventives on your pet.

The New York State Department of Health has a lot of great data on their website on prevention, what to look for, links to repellents to use and a lot more: https://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/lyme/Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Animal Health Diagnostic Center publishes and offers a great on-line brochure called “Lyme Disease: Determine Your Animal’s Status.” Again, a lot of good information. You can find the brochure at: https://ahdc.vet.cornell.edu/sects/serol/lymedeterminestatus.cfm or https://ahdc.vet.cornell.edu/docs/Lyme-Disease-Brochure.pdfPer the brochure, these are the symptoms you should look for in your dog if you suspect Lyme disease: “Dogs can display several forms of Lyme disease, but the most common symptoms are: lameness, swollen lymph nodes, joint swelling, fatigue, and loss of appetite. In addition, serious kidney complications have been associated with the infection”.

Vaccines and Immunology:If you are interested in learning more about vaccines and immunology for canine Lyme disease: There are three vaccines on the market and each act a bit differently on your dog’s immune system. You may want to talk to your veterinarian about the vaccination they use and why. For more knowledge on vaccinations, the multiplex assay used for testing for Lyme disease, immunity and treatment for canines check out this great Q&A with Dr. Bettina Wagner, Director of Serology/Immunology, Animal Health Diagnostic Center, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University. Pet Insurance Companies and Benefits/Coverage for Lyme Disease Prevention and Treatment. In case you are shopping for pet insurance or already have a provider you may want to look further into what they offer regarding benefits/coverage for parasitic diseases. This writer went to the Consumer Affairs website where they listed the fourteen most re-viewed pet insurance providers. The writer contacted five of these companies and asked what type of coverage for parasite disease prevention (flea/tick) and treatment they provide and their answers were as follows: • One company does not cover treatment for any parasitic diseases but with an “add on” wellness policy coverage for an extra $65.00 a year, $40.00 is available towards a titer for any parasitic disease.• One company stated they do not cover preventatives at all but will cover some treatment for Lyme disease, but, only if owner and veterinary records can prove the dog was on a preventative while transmission of Lyme occurred. (they advise save your receipts for flea/tick preventative and make sure your vet has it on record you are administering this).• Another company offers an “add on” policy that will cover the vaccine for Lyme and preventative treatment for flea/tick, and Lyme is one of the few parasitic diseases they will provide some reimbursement for. But again, only if you can prove the dog contracted the disease while on a preventative.• And another company, under their “whole pet policy” states after you exhaust the $250.00 deductable within the year, then they will cover vaccination and treatment for Lyme and one other type of parasitic disease. • The last company, (the one writer has coverage with) told writer “I’m not sure”. “I’ll have to get back to you”.

Hopefully this article has provided some resources you may find valuable.

We are grateful to all of our contributors, through whose generous donations, we are able to provide medical care to all of our foster dogs. But this year, possibly because our economy is sluggish, donations are down, and we fear a day when we might have to forego a necessary operation because it might mean another foster dog wouldn’t get care he or she needs. Won’t you help? All contributions are tax deductible and will be gratefully acknowledged. As a supporter of GRRCNY, you’ll also receive quarterly issues of The Barquer! All contributions help fund our Rescue efforts and also help with medical costs for our foster Goldens! Use the form below or go to Paypal link at our website http://grrcny.org/donations.html.

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been espe-cially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times

gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spot-ted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together. - Author Unknown

14 The Barquer- Summer 2016- Golden Retriever Rescue of Central NY

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been es-pecially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss some-one very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together. - Author Unknown
