What is New Historicism?

New Historicism is critical approach that uses history to understand writing. The goal is to understand the literature through its cultural context.

Readers can analyze from this perspective by recognizing the work as a reflection of the history and culture during author’s time.

They can do this by taking into account historical events and milestones that took place during the specific time, and how they were implied in the plot of the story.

Historical Background‒ The book was written shortly after the Second World

War

‒ Golding was able to experience the horrors of this war

firsthand, he served in the Royal Navy as a commander of

a rocket-launcher, participating in the pursuit and sinking

of the German battleship Bismarck in 1941 and in the

invasion of Normandy

‒ The Second World War displayed the ongoing battle

between dictatorship and democracy, through the more

powerful opponents, Germany and Britain

Page 5: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

Historical Background

‒ Adolf Hitler was rising as the dictatorial leader of Germany, and

similarly in Britain, Winston Churchill gained authority as the

democratic leader of Britain

‒ Hitler, as the chancellor of Germany, had the absolute power

over the country without the input of any of the citizens. He

manipulated fear to control the population, leading the country

to commit barbaric atrocities

‒ Winston Churchill was elected as Prime Minister by the citizens

of Britain. Each citizen had the power of voting - things were

done as a collective on fair terms“Continuous effort - not strength or

intelligence - is the key to unlocking our

potential”

“Make the lie big, make it simple,

keep saying it, and eventually they

will believe it.”

Significance in Lord of the Flies‒ Ralph is depicted as a democratic leader, alluding to Churchill

○ He uses orderly methods to maintain a civil structure on

the island, allowing the boys to have freedom over the

island and making sure each of the boys plays an equal

part in preserving the structure

‒ Jack is shown as a dictator, alluding to Hitler

○ He uses fear and violence to assert his dominance and

manipulate the boys on the island into following his

leadership (like a dictator). He tricks the boys into taking

part of the savage actions on the island

Inside the floating cloak, he was tall, thin, and bony; and his hair was red beneath the black

cap… Out of his face stared two light blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to

anger” (Golding 20).

Quote Analysis

Symbolism & Allusion: “His hair was red” - The

colour red is associated with and symbolizes war, bloodshed, and danger.

Red is also the primary colour on the Nazi Germany flag.

Imagery: “Out of his face stared two

light blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to anger” This quote demonstrates very early on that Jack is easily quick to anger and has a short temper.

He is already naturally the most animalistic boy on the island.

“‘Choir! Stand still!’ Wearily obedient, the choir

huddled into line and stood there swaying in the sun” (20).

“‘All right. Who wants Jack for chief?’ With dreary obedience, the choir raised their hands” (23).

Chapter 1

Page 13: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

Quote Analysis

Diction: “Wearily obedient” Wearily: Means to be tired

or exhausted.

Obedient: Means to comply with or to be submissive to authority.

Diction: “Swaying in the sun” Swaying: Means to move to

and fro.

Diction: “Dreary obedience” Dreary: Means sorrowful or

sad.

Here, we can see how intimidating Jack is, which is why the choir is obligated to obey his orders or to obey his following, whether they’d like to or not.

Nuremberg Laws and the Reich Citizenship Laws

Reich Citizenship Law: Article 1

“A subject of the state is a person who enjoys the protection of the German Reich and who in consequence has specific obligations toward it.”

Reich Citizenship Law: Article 2

“A Reich citizen is a subject of the state who is of German or related blood, and proves by his conduct that he is willing to and fit to faithfully serve the German people and Reich.”

Unless you are a Reich citizen, you will not receive protection from the German government. This can be compared with

Jack.

If any of the Nuremberg Laws are disobeyed, you will be sent either to jail or

to a concentration camp

Chapter 2

Page 17: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

Diction: “Challengingly” This means to “offer a

challenge” or to “test one’s ability.” When he looked at them “challengingly,” he looked for anybody who dared to question his abilities.

Quote Analysis

Diction: “Slam”This is defined as “a violent

and noisy closing, dashing, or impact.”

Jack has naturally violent tendencies because of his fear of failing to hunt. He will now do whatever it takes to fulfill his goal.

Jack does not want to look weak. He is scared of being viewed as a weak or insufficient person because he has no other role other than to hunt since

Ralph has already been nominated chief.

Page 18: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

“‘Ralph’s right of course. There isn’t a

snake-thing. But if there was a snake we’d hunt it and kill it. We’re going to hunt pigs to get meat for everybody. And we’ll look for the

snake too -’” (36).

Page 19: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

Jack is trying to justify his sense of violence. His natural will to want to hunt is being expressed here, he is just looking for a way to justify that killing is the right thing to do in order to quell the younger uns.

Quote Analysis

However, there is another very important clue within this quote: Here, Jack is affirmative in saying that the “beastie” that the younger boys saw does not exist. He states it as if it is a fact. However, later on the novel, he uses the beast again in order to manipulate the fear of the boys in order to get them to his side.

Message and Lesson Told Through Quote:

Through this quote and chapter of the book, Golding explores a representation of political figures through Jack and Ralph. Teaching the reader about the styles of leadership, exploring their similarities and differences. This is explored through the idea of democracy versus dictatorship.

Relation to History:

Through the novel Golding uses the characters of Ralph and Jack to represent historical figures of the time period. Firstly Ralph demonstrates Churchill, as he was a democratic leader, this is shown through Ralph allowing for others to help make decisions and giving others power. Secondly Jack, represents Hitler for he gains all power through fear. He makes all the decisions and does not deliver power among others. Overall these are political figures seen through this time period, which could allow for an influence in Golding's writing.

Literary Devices Used:

The device used throughout this quote is conflict. As through the novel and history there is a present ongoing conflict between the leaders and their style of leadership.

Conflict is demonstrated through William Golding’s book Lord of the Flies in many ways. But primarily through the demonstration of the differences present between Jack and Ralph, how the boys argue about the way a task should be done and lastly the present ongoing battle between each other. For overall Golding uses the idea of conflict to express the presence of the historical figures attributes hidden among Ralph and Jack.

Page 23: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

“Rescue? Yes, of course! All the same” Golding 53

Message and Lesson Told Through Quote:

Through this quote Golding, demonstrates the joining of forces as for the choir/hunter boys team up with ralph to complete their end goal of being rescued and returning home.

Secondly through this quote Golding demonstrates the understanding of Ralph and Jack working to complete a similar goal.

Overall Golding teaches the readers about how allowing the two groups of boys to work together, will benefit their chance of survival. For they gain power through the society as an equal.

Relation to History:

This demonstrates the idea from when Golding was a member in WW2 for the british military, Canada which was a colony of britain was automatically at war. For this was in according to the state of Canada’s Government and development, as Canada was self-governing but did not controls its affairs, and legal status. This idea was explored through the british declaration of war, in which brought together the Canadian and British military services. Which is similar to the joining of the forces demonstrates throughout the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the groups worked among one another to complete a similar goal or outcome.

Literary Devices Used:

Through this Quote, Golding uses an analogy.

An analogy is the act of comparing two things with a common objective and or building of a relationship between these objects/individuals.

Through the novel Golding compares his experiences with the experiences among the characters. For example the idea of joining forces which was explored through history and the novel.

across from right ear to left ear. “ Golding 63

Message and Lesson Told Through Quote:

Through this quote Golding demonstrates Jack descending into savagery as he parts and pulls away from his civilized norms.

Relation to History:

Through this passage Golding relates Jack with Hitler. As he demonstrates the attributes of Hitler and his symbols. This is demonstrated through the act of Jack putting red, black and white paint on his face creating a new identity and descending into savagery.

For Hitler used these colours as a symbol of his power and leadership among the Germans.

Literary Devices Used:

Through this quote Golding uses colour symbolism to embrace Jack’s new identity. As Golding uses the colours red, white and black which are all a component in the Nazi symbol of Hitler. Allow for Golding to express the presence of dictatorship through Jack by symbolizing Hitler and Jack with many similarities.

Red = Violent passion, hate, evil, sin, and bloodBlack = Power, death, and darkness White = Purity, and goodness

“ I cut the pig’s throat, “ said Jack proudly, and yet he twitched as he said it” Golding

69

Message and Lesson Told Through Quote:

Golding teaches the reader, that every individuals has innocence but when placed under stressful, fearful, and unknown conditions an individual will begin to part from their sense of innocence and develop into savagery.

Relation to History:

This idea of an individual descending into savagery when placed under stressful, fearful, and unknown conditions, relates to the fact that Golding was a member of World War two and to carry out his duties, Golding ordered the destruction of German ships and submarines and he killed German troops from sea during the D-Day landings. Golding was said to be “shocked” by his own capacity to harm others. As seen through the quote as Jack is to carry out his duties of killing the pig, but is overwhelmed with the experience and emotion.

Literary Devices Used:

Through this quote Golding explores the idea of innocence but when placed under stressful, fearful, and unknown conditions an individual will begin to part from their sense of innocence and develop into savagery. Golding uses diction to improve the quality of his writing and to allow the reader to develop an understand of how Jack feels and expressions when carrying out his duties.

Diction is analyzing the author's choice of words.

Twitched = a slight jerk of a body part = a short sudden pull or jerk.

“And I was frightened and started to call out for Ralph and then I saw something

moving among the trees, something big and horrid.” (85)

Literary device: Diction

“frightened”: Negative connotation - to be afraid or anxious

“big”: Neutral diction, but in the given context has a negative connotation, describing the threatening qualities of the beast

“horrid”: Negative connotation - to cause horror

Explanation

By picking words with negative diction to describe the beast, Golding is able to effectively convey the boys’ perception of the beast. The readers can understand how frightened the boys are of encountering the beast, through both the implicit and explicit wording.

The Invasion of Normandy‒ In relation to history, during the invasion of

Normandy, France (June - July 1944), an event in which Golding participated in as a soldier, Allied soldiers were in constant fear of being ambushed by Germans

‒ The Germans had the advantage, with their forces occupying France, and the soldiers were paranoid of being attacked by the large Nazi Panzer tank artillery

‒ This is similar to the boys on the island, in constant paranoia of the beast

Page 31: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

“After Jack says that there is no possible way for the beast to exist, he suddenly brings

back the idea:

“‘If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down! We'll close in and beat and

beat and beat -!’ He [Jack] gave a wild whoop...At once the

platform was full of noise and excitement, scramblings, screams

and laughter.” (91-92)

Page 32: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

“‘If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down! We'll close in and beat and beat and beat -!’ He [Jack] gave a wild

whoop...At once the platform was full of noise and excitement, scramblings, screams and laughter.” (91-92)

Literary device: Repetition & Diction

“beat and beat and beat”: Repetition - the word “beat” is repeated several times to emphasize Jack’s savage/attacking nature

“Wild”: Diction - negative connotation, meaning not civilized/primitive

“scramblings”: Diction - negative connotation, meaning to move around awkwardly using one’s hands and feet like an animal

“screams”: Diction - negative connotation - to give long, loud piercing cries

Explanation

- Despite the fact that he knows the beast does

not exist, Jack suddenly revives the idea of the

beast, using the fear to manipulate the boys to

be on his side.

- Jack knows the boys are extremely frightened

by the beast, so he uses that to his advantage by

suggesting to hunt it.

- This causes their savage natures to be revealed

through the negative connotations

The Reichstag Speech‒ In January of 1939, Hitler gave a speech in Berlin, in honour of his

6th year of being chancellor of Germany - known as the

“Reichstag Speech”

‒ He forced Germans to believe that Jews posed a “threat” (however,

the Jews were just a scapegoat. This caused extreme fear amongst

German citizens leading them to join Hitler’s bandwagon

‒ By the end of the war, Germany had committed the savage-like

atrocity of killing over 6 million Jews

‒ This is like Jack, manipulating fear to use as his advantage, while

also leading the boys to develop animalistic natures

everyone becomes afraid:

change. It faced out, rather than in” (100)

“The circle of boys shrank away in horror. Johnny, yawning still, burst into noisy tears and was slapped by Bill till he

choked on them. The bright morning was full of threats and the circle began to change. It faced out, rather than in”

(100)

Literary device: Imagery & Juxtaposition

“shrank away in horror” “burst into noisy tears” “it faced out, rather than in”: Imagery - these segments are all vividly describing how fearful the boys are of the beast by using adjectives with negative connotation

“The bright morning was full of threats”: Juxtaposition - it contrasts the happiness of day with the threats of fear, displaying how overtaking this fright is to the kids

Explanation

Golding uses imagery to distinctly explain the scene,

allowing the readers to better understand how scared the

boys are of the beast. Juxtaposition also hints at the idea

that the innocence associated with daytime is being

infiltrated by their own terrors

Kristallnacht‒ This relates to the event of “Kristallnacht”, during November

9th and 10th in the year of 1938.

‒ It was a pogrom where German citizens and SS members

rioted and began to destroy anything with Jewish association,

because of their manipulated fear of Jews

‒ Chaos was everywhere, and many things were destroyed.

Broken glass was from all the destruction was throughout the

streets of Germany, and the event earned the name of

“Crystal Night” or “Kristallnacht”

‒ Similarly, the fear of the beast also leads the boys into

disorder

“‘Shove a palm trunk under that [the boulder] and if an enemy

‘and - wheee!’” (106)

grass dotted with heads, and behind that the forest. ‘One heave,’ cried Jack, exulting, ‘and-wheee-!’” (106)

Literary device: Characterization

“if an enemy came - look!”: Characterization - this reveals Jack’s animalistic nature by having the idea of killing his future enemies

“One heave”: Characterizes Jack’s desperation to enact violence, and kill his enemies

Explanation

- Jack is characterized as a very violent and savage

person when he implies that he wants to kill any of

his potential enemies by dropping boulders on

them.

- He recognizes the cliff as a good spot to be if so that

if in the future, if one of his feared enemies came

after him, he could easily kill them - showing Jack to

be animalistic by nature.

Hitler’s Personality‒ This can connect to Adolf Hitler’s personality, and

who he was as a person based on what he did

‒ He was always determined to gain power, and part of

that goal was to exterminate all those he hated, or

posed threats to his power

‒ Hitler’s politics would always surround how his

enemies could be eliminated and how he could stay in

power, just like Jack, admiring the cliff for the purpose

of killing his enemies.

Literary Devices

Diction - Vulnerable: something or someone is susceptible to emotional attack or harm

This portrays the image that the flesh is up for grabs for all the boys to eat, therefore Ralph is fighting his was through the crowd so he will not starve. This use of diction represents that all the boys are fighting for survival, since the fear of death and starving is overpowering.

Allusion:● In the quote, allusion is also present. In the tense that the boys

are becoming more and more vicious. ● It is not directly mentioned in the quote, but the diction used

portrays that the boys are slowly going insane. This is an indirect reference to the civilians in ww2 in the sense that the civilians had to change their mindset so they could survive. Civilians in ww2 had to implement different ways of life so they could survive.

● For example, in poland, during the mid 40’s, regular citizens at the time had to follow hitler's way of life so that hitler and the nazi army didn’t execute them because the Nazi army executed everyone who didn't follow his orders and way of life of Nazism.

Imagery

● Animal Imagery/Zoomorphism: “The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering” ○ Animal imagery is used in this segment of the quote because animalistic features

are being given to Ralph. For example, some animals are known to squeeze and hurt people very viciously. that Ralph is giving in to his environment and that way of living on the island. The lone wolf mentality is taking control of Ralph and he is starting to slowly think more about his well being other than everyone else.

○● This quote strongly represents how the fear of starvation that Ralph is put through

influences the boys on the island and how this releases their animalistic features and attitudes.

Page 47: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

Literary Devices

Diction: Heaving: extremely crowded, filled with peopleFrightened: negative connotation - scared and worriedDirty: Neutral connotation: to be unclean, covered in dirt, mud, etc

This quote also contains violent imagery because the words used to describe the pig being killed are very vicious and all the kids are acting in a very animalistic and violent manner by making the dying noises. Roberts frightened sniffles are like a voice in the darkness because that’s all the quiet and tired boys can hear.

Metaphor:The silence accepted the gifts and awed them: this is a metaphor for the silence being characterized as something or someone that can accept the pigs head. The silence is depicted to be the beast.

Ties to history: This quote is relevant due to jews heads were cut off and put on stakes because they didn’t follow Hitler’s laws and precedents to scare the citizens enough so that they wouldn’t do the same thing again.

Diction High pitched - high sound and pitch, high frequency Hot blood - high temperature, usually blood is a high temperature due to body heating

Imagery In this quote, the author portrays the scene to be very graphic. For example, the blood spouting into Jack’s hands. This quote represents how vicious the kids are becoming, and how they are adapting to being distant from society, and how they’re becoming more primordial

"Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his bloodNow out of terror rose another desire, thick, urgent, blind.

Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood " (Golding 152)

Literary Device

Repetition: “Kill the beast!Cut his throat!Spill his blood”This phrase was repeated many times in the book. The boys shout this out of fear that the beast is going to come and kill them. Therefore, showing their animalistic nature.

Diction: “terror” Terror = FearThe word terror has negative connotation it describes the fear the boys have of the beast.

Historical Connection

- When Hitler ordered the Germans to kill all the Jews, manipulating them and causing the Holocaust to happen.

- That is what Jack did to gain leadership and power over Ralph. He supported the boys desire to kill the beast. By using this they elected him their new leader.

Hitler and Jack pursue people by providing them with safety from a threat that they fear, than using their fear for power.

Therefore, making them do savage acts.

Chapter 9: Quote #2

“Before the party had started a great log had been dragged into the center of the lawn and Jack, painted and garlanded, sat there like an idol. There were piles of meat on green

leaves near him, and fruit, and coconut shells full of drink.” (Golding 149)

Literary DeviceDiction: Idol - A person that is admired or worshiped

Golding refers idol as a negative connotation because when the boys start to idolize Jack. His thirst for power starts to increase and revealing Jacks animalistic behaviour.

Imagery: Describes the place as a paradise.

Historical Connection

- Hitler thought of himself as an idol, like Jack did. The more power they achieved the more animalistic they got. Furthermore, the fear they both had of losing power lead them to do unhuman like actions.

- For example; In 1939, Adolf Hitler does a public speech called Reichstag, on how the Jewish race “intent” to survive and expand at the expense of Germans. Using negative stereotypes and racial arguments to persuade the Germans to be on his side to kill the Jews and gain power.

- Jack did the same when he destroyed everything that connected them to civilization like the conch. He also, killed people out of fear that they would pursue his army to stop obeying him.

Chapter 10: Quote #3

“ The chief was sitting there, naked to the waist, his face blocked out in white and red. The tribe lay in a semicircle before him. The newly beaten and untied Wilfred was

sniffling noisily in the background.” (Golding 160)

Literary Devices

Garment Imagery: Clothing = civilizationNaked = loss of civilization/humanity

- In the book, the clothing symbolized the civilization they had. In the beginning the boys had school uniform on. Meaning that they were used to rules and following them. As you go on they slowly take off their clothes. This shows how the boys are slowly transitioning from civilized children to savages.

Imagery: - Jack uses fear to gain authority and respect of the boys by beating Wilfred and leaving him in the

background, insinuating that this will happen to them if they didn't obey him.

Historical

Connection

-

Page 56: In Lord of the Flies...In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows the reader that humans are best motivated by ... Chapter 1 Inside the floating cloak, he was tall,

Historical Connection

By the start of World War 2, the SS (Schutzstaffel) would martyr people (execute) them in town squares as a symbol of dominance. The SS, executed them in the town square to demonstrate that if they do not obey, the same thing would happen to them which created fear of retaliation. Jack did the same tactic that the SS did when he was beating Wilfred and leaving him in the back all beaten for everyone to see. Resulting to animalistic behaviour.

Chapter 10: Quote #4"[The beast] came--disguised. He may come again even though we gave him the head

of our kill to eat. So watch; and be careful." (Golding 160)

Literary DeviceExplain how this shows fearDiction: Be careful = to be cautious, avoid danger etc

In the quote Jacks brings up the beast again saying “he may come again” and telling the boys to be careful. Using their fear of the beast as a manipulation to get them to do what he wants. Resulting them to do animalistic acts.

Historical Connection

- When Hitler became leader, he won people's support with promises to the Germans to help them get out of the recession and making their country better again. For example, when Hitler broke the treaty of versaille and created a secret army.

- Jack did the same thing with the boys. He promised to protect them from the beast and kill the beast. By using their fear of the beast all the boys became part of Jack's tribe and made him chief and rebelling against Ralph.

Both of them manipulated people to get what they wanted, they used people's fear to gain power.

Chapter 11 Quote # 1

Diction

This shows Diction because Ralph and Jack were showing animalistic traits by “breathing fiercely”

When Jack attacks Ralph thinking that he was going to attack him was like what happened in WW2 when Hitler turned on the Russians and attacked them when he thought they were going to attack him.

Literary Devices Link to History

Quote: “Jack made a rush and stabbed at Ralph’s chest with his spear. Ralph sensed the position of the weapon ... and put the thrust aside with his own butt … and caught Jack a stinger across the ear. They were chest to chest, breathing fiercely, pushing and glaring.”(Golding 177)

Chapter 11 Quote # 2

Zoomorphism: This shows zoomorphism because it shows Jack doing something “viciously” which is animalistic behaviour

Symbolism:Water is the symbol of birth, resurrection, and redemption

Jack viciously throwing his spear at Ralph and doing it on purpose is like how Hitler was killing innocent Jews and fully knowing that he was.

Literary Devices Link to History

Quote: “Viciously, with full intention, he hurled his spear at Ralph. The point tore his skin and flesh over Ralph’s ribs, then sheared off and fell in the water. Ralph stumbled, not feeling pain but panic… the tribe, screaming now like the chief, began to advance”(Golding 181)

Chapter 12 Quote # 1

Personification: This is personification because the skull is “regarding Ralph” even though the skull is inanimate

Ralph being fearful and full of rage when he saw the skull and rejecting the answers it gave him by hitting it is like how soldiers in the world war would try to reject the fact that they are killing other humans by convincing themselves that they are doing the right thing.

Literary Devices Link to History

Quote: “The skull regarded Ralph like one who knows all the answers and won’t tell. A sick fear and rage swept him. Fiercely he hit out at the filthy thing in front of him” (Golding 185)

Chapter 12 Quote #2

Metaphor:This is a metaphor because Sam is comparing Roger to a “terror” which is someone who uses extreme fear

Sam and Eric not rejoining Ralph is similar to when Germany invade Poland. Poland was scared of Germany and the repercussions that might have happened if they tried to fight back

Literary Devices Link to History

Quote: “‘Won't you come with me? Three of us, we’d stand a better chance.’ After a moment’s silence, Sam spoke in a strangled voice ‘You don’t know Roger. He's a terror’”(Golding 189)
