In January 2018 a group of Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA) and Science and Math Institute (SAMI) students will travel to Cambodia and Lao PDR with their instructors. Through Global Perspectives Humanities classes students have investigated issues in women’s issues such as education, health, and human tracking – in South Asia. Students will travel to Cambodia to extend their studies as they have an opportunity to serve as educators, mentors, friends, and co-learners in schools of underserved children in through the Ponheary Ly Foundation. “The Ponheary Ly Foundation promotes access to public educational opportunities and the health and well-being of children and young people in Cambodia’s Siem Reap and Preah Vihear provinces. We believe that in order for children to learn, they must have food security, a stable place to live, transport to school, and access to medical care — the same everyday supports that should be aorded to children throughout the world.” (http://theplf.org/wp/) From there we will travel to Nam Et - Phou Louey National Park for an eco-tour with the Nam Nern Safari where students will learn about wildlife conservation, local ora and fauna, and the ways in which the national park has worked with local communities in anti-poaching eorts. Students will volunteer in schools for approximately two weeks and during non-school times will visit the ancient historical sites surrounding Angkor Wat, modern historical sites such as the Killing Fields and S-21 Prison, and the bird sanctuary of Prek Toal.
