IN INDIA,AS FASHION DESIGN IS STILL IN ITS FLEDGLING STAGE, ITOFFERS PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENTHUSIASTIC,TALENTEDAND HARD WORKING YOUNGSTERS

he word 'fashion' imme-diately conjures up images

of glitz and glamour. Andmany young people, attracted

by these attributes decide to foray intofashion only to realize that what theysee outside is not the inside story. Ad-mittedly, there are some glamorous as-pects to this business. As part of the fashfrat (fashion fraternity for the unin-formed), you may get to rub shoulderswith the rich and famous, but reachingthere is sheer hard work.

Fashion design can be divided intothree main branches - garment design, leather design, accessory and jewellerydesign. Here we will focus on garmentdesign.

While the saying "clothes maketh aman" merits debate, the fact is we nolonger wear clothes to keep ourselvescovered or warm, but to express our per-sonality and "attitude". This is wherethe fashion designer steps in, to help usmake the correct fashion statement. Cre-ating a style, using the right fabric, theright cut and a good finish, the design-er turns out either a singular creation(one of its kind) that may sell for a king'sransom, or more usually, outfits that willreach a retail outlet in different sizesand colours. In certain cases, the gar-ment may even be mass-produced for aspecific market.

Garments include items of regularclothing, generally western style, al-though there is a growing local marketfor Indian style designer wear such assalwar-kameez, sherwanis, ghagra-cho-lis, kurtis and so on.

There are four courses of action thatyou can adopt to launch into the careerof your dreams: Apprenticeship undera flourishing, well-known designer; Em-ployment in an export house or garmentmanufacturing unit; Freelancing forfashion houses and boutiques; and self-employment, as in opening your bou-tique or manufacturing unit or an ex-port outfit to showcase your talent.

In India, the fashion industry has justbegun to come of age. As it is still in itsfledgling stage, it offers plenty of op-portunities for enthusiastic, talented andhard working youngsters.

A question often asked by youngpeople is whether they really need tobe trained to be a designer. Most youngpeople who are able to sketch well andhave an interest in fashion believe theirtalent and interest already qualifies themfor the fashion industry. But fashion de-sign is not just about sketching prettyclothes. Barring a few exceptions wheretalent borders on genius, it is certainlyrecommended that you pursue a coursein fashion design. And you can do sostraight after school. There are a vari-

ety of courses available to suit differentneeds and budgets.

While the academic requirements arenot very high, you need to be highly cre-ative to combine colours, shades andtextures, and express your ideas throughsketches.

If you can visualise designs and enjoyworking with fabrics and accessories youare looking at the right career. Alongwith fashion consciousness and creativ-ity, you also need excellent communi-cation skills to articulate your ideas andunderstand the client's requirements.Knowledge of the market and a goodeye for detail are the other must-haves.

Beware though fashion is as muchabout technique as about style. You needto be clued in on manufacturing tech-nology, time and motion studies, plantefficiency, labour motivation, zero-de-fect production - all are extremely rele-vant to this industry. Before you becomea name to reckon with, be prepared toput in tons of hard work and runningaround.

However, fashion design is just oneof the many careers that a student offashion design prepares for. There area number of others such as marketingand merchandising, fashion co-ordina-tion, fashion journalism, etc.

As a fresher you'll start out with amonthly package of Rs.8,000-14,000. A

couple of years down as your designing skills mature, your salary would be in the range of Rs.30,000-40,000.Of course, if you become a marquee designer and arelucky enough to go international, you could for a singlecreation, quite literally ask for the moon!

Your race for admission into a reputed fashion schoolwill begin straight after school. Subjects like drawing, painting, home science, and computer graphics will de-velop your creativity. By the time you finish the courseyou will have mastered the step-by-step production of agarment - from designing to pattern making, produc-tion and even marketing.

Although, if you are interested in further specialisa-tion to work in a large manufacturing unit or start yourown fabrication unit someday, you could opt for post-graduate courses in garment manufacture, merchandis-ing, etc. You can opt for a course in accessory design orspecifically in jewellery design, knitwear design, footweardesign or leather design as well - the options are as di-verse as the range and variety of accessories themselves.

FASHIONISTA - THE GURUKUL

I came here in June, 2011, with nervousness, curiosity, cold hands

and feet to get into the class. Interior designing began with line

practicing. I thought it to be so easy. But eventually learned the

practicality. From line to practicality, the journey was

impeccable. Classes, teachers, assignments, all rolled upon my

mind throughout. I was lucky to accomplish this beautiful

journey with different junctions in between. Throughout the journey there was

attainment and satisfaction. This could never have happened without the support

of M.D. ma’am and Papia ma’am. I have immense respect for both of you.

Not just this but this institution provides a lot of placement offers in Delhi and other

states. I got my internship placement at a leading firm in Mumbai.

“Learning till your capability” is the motto of this organisation. The only thing we need

to put in is hardwork and we are there, where we want.
