Presidents Report

Brian Negus the General Manager Public Policy for the

RACV provided plenty of interesting and disturbing facts

last week when he spoke about what the AAA are doing

during the lead-up to Federal Election (when-ever that

may be). The AAA (Australian Automobile Association)

whose members include the RACV, NRMA, RACQ etchave launched a program “Demand Better Roads” and

are urging the combined 7 million members to demand

better funding for land transport infrastructure from their

local politicians and want all Federal and State govern-

ments to implement major reforms.

According to the AAA the amount of funding required to

provide the priority road and land transport infrastruc-

ture across all states is in the vicinity of $99.3 billion, an-

nual Federal expenditure on land transport is approxi-mately $4.9 billion but the amount raised from Fuel ex-

cise per annum is around $15 billion. The AAA identifies

the significant gap between the growing need for the

infrastructure required and the existing funding methods.

They also claim that by improving the quality and safety

of our roads, the current cost to the Australian economy

of around $27 billion could be reduced.

Brian also spoke about the other issues that the AAA

want all political parties to address including; an in-creased focus on road safety, promoting consumer

awareness about safer vehicles and clear and accurate

fuel pricing (complicated by the involvement by the su-

permarkets and their shopper docket programs and du-

opoly). Brian mentioned a new website that allows con-

sumers to compare prices in their local area; http://

motormouth.com.au.

There was a lot of interesting questions for Brian which

indicates the quality of the presentation which was en-joyed by not only the members but by visitors David

Waldron (a friend of David Greenall) as well as Rewa

Jones and Shirley Frewen. A full report of Brian’s

presentation is included later in this bulletin.

As mentioned at the meeting last week, the Con-

course Traders Association met last Wednesday

evening to discuss their annual festival. They wereunanimous in deciding that the RCOB should take

over the planning and running of future festivals.

Our next step is to meet with a sub-group of traders

to pave the way for planning the next festival which

they have earmarked for Friday 29 November sub-

ject to that date not clashing with anything else in

the area or another festival day in Bayside.

It’s now only one week till the first major night of the

year. All is in readiness for An Evening with Jona-

than. Megan Glenwright has done an amazing job

of not only organising the attendance (160 people)

but also arranging the prizes, table settings, menu

and seating plan. All we need to do now is turn up

and enjoy, what should be, a fantastic night.

It is extremely encouraging to see how many mem-

bers read David’s wonderful newsletter thoroughly

as can be seen from the number of emails I received

last week picking up a major typographical error. The date for one of the most anticipated nights on

the annual calendar, the much loved AGM, is not

October 10 (that night is reserved for the DG’s visit)

but October 17.

While the Sergeant’s fine session is raising a healthy

level of fines, David may have to refine the time

frames for his “quiz homework”. For example, next

week’s subject is Famous Classic Literature Quotes,

great – only a thousand years or more to research. How about these; do they count? (See Ed comment)

The difference between literature and journalism is

that journalism is unreadable and literature is

not read.Oscar Wilde

Alcohol is my lawful wife and literature my mis-

tress; when I get tired of one, I spend the night

with the other. Anton Chekhov

A successful man is one who makes more money

than his wife can spend. A successful woman is

one who can find such a man. Lana Turner

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid

ones that need the advice. Bill Cosby

Wine is constant proof that God loves us and

loves to see us happy.Benjamin Franklin

Sallie Geary, a National Youth Science Forum at-

tendee is this week’s speaker with Geoff Stockdale

in the chair. An evening to look forward to.

See you there.

Robert Robert Robert Robert

ED; The topic is actually Famous Quotes from English

Literature ( I checked with the Sergeant as there was

some confusion) so technically even Oscar Fingal

O'Flahertie Wills Wilde may not count if you are

being pedantic!

Sergeant’s Session Topic

Sergeant David has introduced his own novelty, atopic on which he will ask a question; those who failto get the correct answer will be fined. This week’stopic is;

“Famous Quotes from English Literature”

I am sure you are all busy researching the myriadpossible questions which could spring from such a

The Bixby Bridge has been anicon on the Big Sur coastline since1932. It is amazing that some-thing man-made could blend sowell into such an incredible envi-ronment.
