Presidents Report

It has been a big week with the Bottle and Brush Highland Foundation Fundraiser on Wednesday night followed up on Thursday night by the joint meeting with RC Brighton at VGC with the CEO of Victorian Racing being our guest speaker. The Bottle and Brush night was a great success made possible by the help given by Malcolm Sawle, Kerry Geard , Judith Hyde and Heather Chisholm. Di Hone was, of course the lynch pin who this time not only orchestrated the painting on the night but also organized the whole event. The night has made around $1000 and I have decided to donate the Footy tipping donations of $228.45 to this cause rather than MITS as we have budgeted to support them in a major way this year. Heather D'Arcy is running a Charity Mah- Jong and games day at the Huntingdale Golf Club on Monday 11th November at 1.00pm. Some of the proceeds from this will also go to the Highland Foundation (see Flyer in this IN GEAR) and plans are now afoot for a Highland Foundation cocktail party in 2020.

The Combined meeting with RC Brighton proved to be bigger than Ben Hur. It was a great night for the Club with two poten-tial new members in attendance and numerous guests and partners making a grand total of 93 diners. We also had as our guests, Christopher George and Graham Holmes, whose business, Flavours Patisserie Café - Bakery in Bluff Rock, was a finalist in the Bayside Business Excellence Awards. They were the first of a number of finalists we will be inviting to the club.

Gail Anderson and Adrian Culshaw did a lot of background work. Gail organized all the raffle prizes donated by Rac-ing Victoria as well as two tickets to Oaks day which Adri-an professionally auctioned off for $400. Adrian also han-dled all the attendance variations with his usual calm effi-ciency. The Racing Victoria also gave us the Subzero CDs and the Horse biscuits were donated by Jackie Noonan from Mt. Wycheproof Racing Club and made by Bakery on Broadway, Wycheproof. Gail also donated a special bottle of wine to thank Giles Thompson for being our guest speaker. On the night our Raffle and auction collected $838.

Joe McGrath from Racing Victoria gave us some insights into the history of the actual golden cup itself and Giles followed up with a great presentation on the Victorian Rac-ing Industry and the Spring Carnival.

I need a volunteer to go to the Foundation seminar on Fri-day November 8th at 6.00 pm

The Council have unfortunately cancelled the joint meet-ing, on 22 October, with the Bayside Rotary clubs. They are looking to have another meeting early next year.

This week we are at VGC and our guest speaker is Roy Stanbrook, the Port Melbourne Harbour Master.

Speaker: Giles Thompson, CEO Racing Victoria Topic: Spring Racing Carnival & General Racing Issues

Growing up in the picturesque rural county of Norfolk in the UK, Racing Victoria CEO Giles Thompson had an affinity for horse racing from an early age. His stepfather worked as the course doctor at the local venue in Fakenham, and he has vivid memories of his early days there, the “community feel generated at the track”, and the “sheer intensity and challenge” of the big-ticket races. This passion only grew when he worked as an executive at betting exchange Betfair, including three years as CEO. “It deepened my love of the sport,” Giles says. “We were very racing-focused, we sponsored many meetings, tracks and clubs whenever we could. I spent a lot of time exposed to racing and enjoying it as a sport.” A background in betting proved useful when he moved to Racing Victoria in 2015, ini-tially in a CFO role. “It gave me a great understanding of wagering. Directly or indirectly, most of our income still comes from that sector; A$351 million of our A$408 million last year, so it’s extremely im-portant that we understand that industry.”

Giles gave an excellent and entertaining talk combining the sizzle and the steak. The “sizzle” were the latest promotional videos of the Spring Racing Carnival. You can see some of these on the Racing.com web site. The “steak” was the details about the importance of the industry and the key industry “non negotiables”. These are summarised on the next page. More details are available on the Racing Victoria website.

This cup was presented to the own who won the 1919 Melbourne Cup. In winning the 1919 Melbourne Cup, Artilleryman set a new race record time of 3 minutes 24.5 seconds. This was also the first year that the current three-handled Loving Cup trophy was present-ed to the winning owner.

The sun sets over Seceda, one of the mountains in the Dolomites, or Italian Alps. Your Shot photogra-pher Tomasz Przychodzień remembers, "Ten minutes earlier I was sitting in the tent at 2500m with my wife and 2 year old son waiting for a hail-storm to pass."
