Community Counts

It was a fantastic, fiercely fought out Year 7 Community Hockey Competition last Thursday, which saw 7DJJ: Amelia Gibbons; Sophie Smeaton; Maisie Clegg; Scarlett Spoerry; Neve Tunney; Samuel Kelly; Archie Medway; Harry Stead and Jordan Clarkson crowned Year 7 champions. It was great to see such enthusiasm from participants, spectators and tutors, and the whole event was a resounding success. The total points awarded to each band for the day were:

I Band - 100 points G Band - 255 points S Band - 240 points

Fantastic team spirit was shown by all, with some terrific individual effort from Archie Medway (7DJJ), Carrick Matthews (7GS/JMP) and Jacob Smithson (7MPC). All three used their hockey skills well to play as a team; they also individually contributed many goals and match winning plays. We are eagerly anticipating the Year 8 tournament this Thursday and hope they can live up to the high standards set by Year 7. Mr Cunningham, Mrs Knowles and Miss Mitchell

The School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester held the 9th annual UK Schools’ Computer Animation Competition this year and recently announced their winning entries, out of the 1,000 entries from 1,378 students and 130 schools across the UK. The competition is all about enthusing students about Computer Science, and inspiring them to use computers creatively. Students aged 7-19 entered the competition by creating an original key-frame computer animation, up to one minute in length, using eligible software including: Alice; Flash; Scratch; Blender; Autodesk 3D Studio Max; Autodesk Maya and Serif DrawPlus. Congratulations to Ted Balaam (8LNR) who, although missing out on a main prize, received his certificate recently for his creation ‘Flake the Snowman’.

You may have seen Mr Denison riding to school on his motorbike or maybe you just wondered who owns the bike which is often seen parked at the front of school on sunny days. You might even be one of the lucky ones to have been stuck in a conversation with Mr Denison about all things bike!

This summer, Mr Denison is putting his passion to good use to help raise money for the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes. This is an entirely charity funded organisation whose services are provided by volunteer riders. They help to deliver vital supplies of blood, organs, breast milk and tissue to hospitals across the UK.

Our mathematical motorhead will be riding as part of a relay to help a teddy bear mascot cover 6500 miles across the UK. This will involve more than 200 riders over 12 days and continue 24 hours every day. It aims to emulate the sort of journeys taken by volunteer riders to raise awareness and funds. Mr Denison will be part of a number of legs on Saturday 2nd July around Leeds, Shipley, Keighley, Huddersfield, Scarborough, Sheffield and other local (and not so local!) places. For more information or if you would like to donate, got to http://www.relayriders.co.uk/

Congratulations to Thomas Dover (7AWD) who trains at the Blackburn Rovers Academy. Thomas was in action at the weekend playing in the FA U12 tournament for Blackburn Rovers. Blackburn won the tournament beating Manchester United 2 - 0 in the final where Thomas assisted both goals.

Congratulations to all the students who took part in the ball boy/girl trials. All the students involved have shown excellent commitment, enthusiasm and effort in learning the role of a boy girl/boy. It's been fantastic to see such quantity in numbers wanting to take up this opportunity, and the eagerness with which you have shown in learning the drills has been a real credit to all students. Unfortunately, we did have to make a cut which was made extremely difficult by the standard of everyone who took put in the trials and also the amount of students wanting to take part. Well done to the following students who have made it onto the ball crew this year! Thinking of applying for something you see in ‘in-form’ but holding back? Well don’t! Four of our students who applied for the positions of Kumon assistants recently advertised via in-form and Headline were successful. Sara Muir, the instructor at Ilkley Kumon Centre was really pleased with the response and commented, ’I had over 50 applicants for this job and Ilkley Grammar School students were by far the most impressive.’ Congratulations to: Charlotte Armitage (12SSS); Rebecca Hall (12PPB); Ethan Thompson (12AJK) and Maddie Fern (12RN).

Dan's Den is a permanent indoor soft play facility housed in the Riddings Hall at Christchurch, The Grove, Ilkley. Run as a not-for-profit charitable company, it benefits the wider community and is supported by Christchurch. The aim of this non-profit making project is to reach out to all children and their families within the local community, regardless of faith or personal circumstance, by providing a fun, clean, safe and stimulating environment in which to play and develop.

Facilities such as Dan’s Den run on volunteers and they are looking for more pairs of hands...can you help?

There are three ways in which you could volunteer:

1. Dan’s Den run an ‘Outnumbered’ session on a Thursday afternoon to aid larger families (twins/multiple family units) from Thursday 9th June and through the school holidays. A commitment of 2 hours per week is required and the work would be direct hands on experience with families. This may appeal to students looking for experience in the care/childcare/education sector.

2. ‘Helping Hands’ is Dan’s Den session to LS29, families with additional needs. This runs on alternate Tuesdays 3.45 - 5.45pm, again this is directly communicating and supporting these families.

3. General volunteers - Dan’s Den volunteers help with all customer facing activities, from the till, coffee making, storytelling, crafts to occasional kitchen help. They currently have students using this volunteering option as part of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and are looking for anybody who would like to gain customer service/charity involvement experience. The commitment can be from as little as a 2 hour regular slot up to whatever you are willing to commit to.

All of these volunteer options are as part of a safe, interesting, professional, fun working environment. Dan’s Den will happily provide future references following on from your volunteer work with them.

If you would like any further information please visit www.dansdenilkley.co.uk and contact them on 01943 603903 or email [email protected].

Childnet love to celebrate the positive things that young people are doing online and that’s why each year they hold a film competition that showcases young people's creativity and understanding of e-safety issues. This year’s theme is all about how we can all make a positive difference online by supporting young people to ‘shine online’. The 11 – 18 category involves creating a two minute film in response to the theme: ‘Shine Online’ – How can you make a positive difference online? Childnet are looking for creative, imaginative films which reflect a positive and inspiring message. You can express your ideas through comedy, animation or music. How about creating an advert, campaign or documentary? It’s entirely up to you! All you have to do is make sure that the completed film reaches Childnet by Monday 13th June. To celebrate the young people’s amazing work, shortlisted finalists will be invited to a private screening at London’s BFI where the winners in both categories will be revealed by the judges and be awarded some great prizes! To find out more and download the resource pack click here and check out this film from last year’s primary category winner, Herbie, about his Childnet Film Competition experience.

Career planning helps you to realise your ambitions — what you would like to do in your working life, which courses would suit you and which colleges/universities or businesses fulfil your needs. Each week, we hope to provide information that will help you along your journey ranging from apprenticeships, open days and insights into careers you may not have thought about.

Further information is available from Mrs Mitchell (Key Stage 4 Hub) or Mrs Stewart (Post 16 Office).

Residential Engineering Work Experience for Girls: RAF Leeming 1-5 August 2016 The RAF are running a work experience residential for Year 10 girls who are interested in engineering. The week is a joint project between the RAF and Women in Science, Engineering and Construction (WISE) and is designed to offer young women a chance to see a range of career opportunities in the exciting world of engineering. The prime objective of the week is to give students hands-on experience and due to the nature of the week places are limited to 40 students. Application forms should be returned by 30th June. There will be healthy competition for the places and the main criteria for acceptance onto the course will be a willingness to consider engineering as a career. The event is funded by the RAF and is free apart from the cost of transport to and from Leeming on the first and last day. Food, accommodation and transport during the week will be provided along with any necessary items of specialist clothing. Students will be supervised at all times by qualified staff. More information is available here or scan the QR code above.

Earn While You Learn With an Apprenticeship Get ahead with an apprenticeship. The world is changing fast, and to get ahead you need up-to-date skills. But you don’t need to sit in a classroom all day to get them – there are other ways of learning that could suit you. An apprenticeship is a real job with training, so you can earn while you learn and get recognised qualifications as you go. You can apply for an apprenticeship if:

you live in England; you're 16 or over and you're not in full-time education. Apprenticeships take between 1 and 4 years to complete. They cover 1,200 job roles in a range of industries, from engineering to financial advice, veterinary nursing to accountancy. Read more about the different types of apprenticeships and job roles available here. If you're interested in an apprenticeship but you don't yet have the skills and experience to get onto one, a traineeship could be for you. A traineeship is a placement that will give you the chance to get some work experience and improve your skills. It can last anything from 6 weeks to 6 months, find out more here Traineeships - get a skills and experience boost.

Key Benefits Progress in your career: surveys show that employers recognise and value apprenticeships, so with hard work you could rise through the ranks quickly. Achieve sought-after qualifications: apprenticeships are the gold standard for work-based learning. Learn job-specific skills: learn from knowledgeable tutors and work alongside experienced staff to gain in-demand skills. Earn a salary: the average wage for an apprentice is £170 per week. Top quality training: get on-the-job experience and off-the-job training. Want to know more? Watch the video: Apprenticeships - A Better Future and more information is available here.
