ProgramDescription Male infertility affects up to twelve percent of the world’s male population. Current methods to diagnose male infertility are labor-intensive, expensive, and laboratory-based. Stigma against male infertility hinders many men from getting tested especially in resource-limited African countries.

Dr. Shafiee’s lab is developing a smartphone-based point-of-care semen analyzer. A semen sample can be automatically analyzed in ~5 seconds and abnormal semen samples based on WHO guidelines can be identified with ~98% accuracy.

The Foley catheter is among the most com-monly used (~30,000,000 per year in the U.S.) but dreaded medical devices. It is a necessity for the drainage of urine and for monitoring urine output, but is associated with pain and infection.

The Toroidal Foley, being developed by Dr. Massicotte and colleagues, glides without friction while in and out of the body, minimizing catheter pain and decreasing infection-prone trauma to the delicate mucus membranes of the urinary tract.

Dr. Shafiee’s lab aims to integrate biology/medicine with micro- and nanotechnology to develop innovative tools and solve unmet clinical problems.

This team consists of 15 postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate students, and graduate students. Applications for their work include infectious disease diagnostics and treatment monitoring for global health, vaccine delivery, personalized cancer immunotherapy, and infertility diagnostics.

His lab is particularly interested in developing

point-of-care diagnostics through utilizing advanc-es in consumer electronics, nanotechnology, and optical/electrical/magnetic sensing modalities.

His work has been recognized by diverse and well respected publications including (among others) ScienceNewsline, nanowerk, physorg, EurekAlert, ScienceDaily, Nature World News, Science World Report, Med Device Online, Azonano, Engadget, Popular Science, Device Space, Product Design & Development, and HCP Live.

Dr. Shafiee’s lab is funded through national, international, and institutional awards including the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
