THE CITY

The poet Goethe praised Heidelberg almost modestly as having "something ideal" about it. But Mark Twain, thepragmatic Mississippi river pilot, speaks of "the lastpossibility of the beautiful."

Today a city with some 148.000 inhabitants, Heidelberg was once the royal residence of German Prince Electors, and for hundreds of years it was a focal point of Germanhistory. Closely connected with Heidelberg are the namesof such houses of nobility as Wittelsbach, Stuart, or Medici,of theologians such as Martin Luther, or political guressuch as Friedrich Ebert.

Strikingly evident is the beauty of Heidelberg’s setting and architecture: edged north and south by the forestedhillsides of the All Saints’ Mountain and the King’s Chair,Heidelberg lies where the Neckar river leaves theOdenwald Forest and ows onward into the Rhine valley. The baroque silhouettes of the houses, the elegant sweepof the bridge over the river, and the stately ruin of theregal castle towering above the town, blend with thesurroundings to present a visual image that is almostethereal.

Amidst this magical setting, the town pulsates with modern life. In the angular lanes of the Old Town, students, tourists, and long-time residents cross paths day andnight. Numerous stages beckon citizens and passers-byalike to enjoy the annual festivals for classics, jazz, lm,theater, and literature.

In Heidelberg’s oldest university, founded in 1386,

research at the highest level is being actively pursued. Atpresent some 30,000 students are matriculated, roughly afth of the population. It is largely the students who vestthe city with its cosmopolitan, international, and youthfulatmosphere. Positioned in one of the most dynamiceconomic regions of Germany, Heidelberg is among themost attractive conference and convention sites in theland.

The Old Bridge (the Karl-Theodor-Bridge)

Together with its famedBridge Gate, which was once apart of the city wall, the bridgehas always been a symbol ofHeidelberg. The statues ofKarl-Theodor (who built and

gave his name to the current stone bridge) and of Pallas Athena, the goddess of wisdom and culture, standenthroned here above the Neckar. The Bridge Monkey,re-erected in the 1970’s on the Old Town side of thebridge, is one of the most popular photo motives. The entrancefee for the castle courtyard, the Great Vat building, and theGerman Apothecary Museum is included in the price. Those wishing to go higher can take the railway up to thenext stop, Molkenkur. Here, where in earlier times guestspartook of a coveted whey cure (Molken-Kur) in the hotel, today’s visitor can enjoy coee and cake on the spacious, sunny terrace looking onto the town.

While the lower funicular presents its streamlined form in dynamic silver grey, a change of trains at the Molkenkurstation propels you into nostalgia. From here onward, thehistoric original car designed of venerable wood in 1907,and completely restored in 2005, takes the visitor to thepeak of the King’s Chair and the surrounding forests. Thespectacular view, from a height of 567 meters or 1,860feet above sea level, is sublime. From the terrace of thefunicular station, the panorama stretches over the entireRhine-Neckar area to the chain of hills of the PalatinateWine Route. On a particularly clear day, the silhouette ofthe Vosges Mountains is visible in the west.

For fans of technology and history, the mountain railway oers a special treat: an exhibition in the charming oldbuilding transfers you to the early beginnings of the King’sChair railway, and the engine room itself is open forinspection. In 2004, the Heidelberg Mountain Railway wasdeclared a culturally signicant monument.

An outing with the mountain railway of Heidelberg’s public utility company is not only an entertaining experience, it isalso a tangible contribution to environmental and climateprotection. The mountain railway is a prime example forenvironmentally safe electromobility – and what’s more, iteliminates the search for a parking place!

Thus came about a classical construction inthe tradition of a Roman triumphal arch, crowned by fourPalatinate lions. In the middle section of the facade facingthe city are portraits of the Elector and his consort, beneath the electoral chapeau, while on the facade lookingaway from the city, the middle eld bears the dedicationinscription below a weaponry trophy with the coat of arms
