SEASHORE TROLLEY MUSEUM’S 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION WILL FEATURE REDEDICATION OF MONTREAL OBSERVATION CAR TO OPERATING FLEET For Canadians and Franco-Americans, the highlight of Seashore Trolley Museum’s grand 75 th Anniversary Celebration on July 5, 2014 may be the rededication of the Montreal “Golden Chariot” to Seashore’s operating fleet. Located at 195 Log Cabin Road in Kennebunkport, Maine, Seashore Trolley Museum, the operating entity of New England Electric Railway Historical Society, is the world’s oldest and largest museum of public transit. Within its collection of over 250 public transportation vehicles, the most spectacular in the Museum’s open car fleet is the “Golden Chariot”, Montreal No. 2, one of the four famous observation cars that regularly operated on summer sightseeing tours in Montreal, Quebec, until shortly before the end of trolley operations in that city. Built by Montreal Street Railway in 1906, Montreal No. 2 was acquired in 1963 by the Museum through the cooperation of the Montreal Transportation Commission and the generosity of the Carling Brewing Company, then of Natick, Massachusetts. Montreal No. 2 has no roof, and its seats are arranged theater fashion at progressively higher levels on either side of a center aisle. (See photo of car when it was still operated by Montreal Street Railway.) Transported by truck and trailer from Montreal to the Carling plant in Massachusetts, the car made a triumphal tour of the countryside en route to Seashore Trolley Museum in 1963 where it was restored and operated for many seasons. The photo at left shows the car at the Museum in 2005. It remained in operation until 2006, when it again needed repairs. It is fitting that this beautiful vehicle is coming back in service for Seashore Trolley Museum’s grand 75 th anniversary celebration!

Transported by truck and trailer from Montreal to the Carling plant in Massachusetts, the car made a triumphal tour of the countryside en route to Seashore Trolley Museum in 1963 where it was restored and operated for many seasons.
