In at the deep end revisited.
Aim: Recreate your own version of a song that is currently in the
top 20 of the UK charts. You are going to create a cover version not a
copy of the song and you should think about how you are going to change
it to make it your own. This weeks top 20 tracks can be found @:

Activity 1: Musical Literacy
Write a descriptionof the song that you are going to cover. Here is an
example:
Trumpets by Jason Derulo
The songs start with asoloMale voice which is quickly joined by a piano.
The vocal line is sung in falsetto and the piano plays a vamped ohm -
cha accompaniment. A synthesized strings sound joins in with the piano
and voice and there is apausejust before the chorus.
In the chorus there are synthesized sound which are used to create the
sound of a trumpet. There are also background voices, which are
whooping, andan electronic drum kit accompanies this. The chorus
repeats but with a stronger bass line the second time. There are also
chime sounds.
The drum pattern and synthesized strings continue into the first verse.
There is a trumpet sound which sometimes plays the melody at the same
time as the singer. The whooping from the chorus also continues.
The introduction is repeated before another refrain of the chorus. The
chorus is fuller this time with louder dynamics and more
countermelodiesbeing played.
After another repetition of the verse the chorus is repeated but now all
the parts, are sung over the piano accompaniment from the
introduction.

The chorus is repeated but with overdubbed vocals where Derulo adds
question and answerstyle phrases.
The outro consists of overdubbed vocals and hand clapping in a repetition
of the chorus. And the final phrase of the song is a synthesized trumpet
playing a version of the trumpet riff, which has been heard throughout
the song but decorated using a blues scale.

The Lead Sheet
A lead sheet contains the words and chords for a song written in a simple
form. A full lead sheet will be written as staff notation with the words
underneath the music and the chords above.
There are lots of websites that provide an even simpler type of lead
sheet, which contains just the words and the chords above. You may find
these useful when you are learning to play your song. Because they only
give you their words and chords you will need to listen to the song as well
to work out rhythm, timing and Melody. Here is an example:

Activity 2: Chords
Look online for, or work out your own lead sheet. When you have got a lead sheet look at the different chords
being used. So that you can perform your song you need to know howto perform the chords on each of the
instruments that youre using. Use the table below to write down how to play the chords/ notes that you need in
your song. The chord of C major has been given to you as an example.

Activity 3: Making an outline Plan
Use the table below to make a plan of how you are going to perform your song. Remember that it is a cover
version not a copy so it doesnt have to be identical to the original. You can fill this table in as you develop your
performance.

Activity 4: The rehearsal and performance.
You need to rehearse your performance until you are able to perform it to the rest of the class. When you perform
your song you will be marked using these grading criteria.
Working Above Expectation: A successful performance where you show you understand the style of the
music and attempt to express the mood of the song. You use dynamics effectively so make the music more
interesting.
You play in time with the rest of the group and you do not play/ sing too loudly or quietly.
Working at Expectation: A good performance where you show reasonable understanding of the style of
the music. There is some attempt to express the mood of the song. There are some dynamics used to make the
music more interesting but they are limited. You mostlyplay in time with the rest of the group and you do not
play/ sing too loudly or quietly.
Working Towards Expectation: Your performance demonstrates no real sense of style and there is no
attempt to express the mood of the song. There are very limited or no dynamics. You show very little or no sense
of ensemble for example you play/ sing too loudly or quietly and/or play out of time with the rest of the band.

Activity 5: Self Evaluation
You will be given verbal feedback from your teacher and classmates when
you have completed the performance. Having listened to the feedbackcomplete the self evaluation below.
1. For this assessment I was working:Working Towards Working At Working Beyond
2.Describe two things that you did well in this task.

3. Describe one thing that you will try to do better in future musicaltasks.
