Up to its neckin the Engineering party, it sponsored the Engineering editionof the Prospector, the St. Pat's picnic, the Hard Luck dance, afootball team, basketball team, and a boxing team in the Intra-mural Sports programs, and the famous "Bean Feeds" wherethe engineers listen between bites to talks by prominent men inthat profession.

ONE OF THE YOUNGEST organizations at Mines is theCollege of Mines branch of the University of Texas student chap-ter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Mines group,which held its first meeting in February, 1948, will receive itsown charter when the Mines civil enqine erinq curricula is ap-proved by the E.C.P.D. The ASCE's were hosts when a jointmeeting of over 100 members of the, society from New MexicoU., New Mexico A. & M., Arizona U., and Texas Tech was heldat Mines May 7 and 8. The Mines students wrote technical pa-pers in competition with students from the other colleges. Thisactive group has heard several speakers and seen films at meet-ings this year.

PRE-MEDIC CLUBThose students with the earnest desire to cut people up,

pour castor oil down children's throats, and help humanity, com-pose the Pre-Medic Club. The members, students who intend toenter medical school, made frequent field trips to nearby hos-pitals and clinics during the school year. The club also heldregular meetings this year, at which many speakers, prominentin medical centers, gave educational talks and lectures.

High brow and long hair may be the terms associated withart students by many college students, but not at Mines, becausethe Beaux Arts Club numbers among its membership some ofthe most popular and best-known students on the compus, aswell as some mighty good artists. Art majors must belong, andthe other members include all art students and those interestedin art appreciation. At their monthly meetings, the Beaux Artsmembers hear speakers who are outstanding in the various artfields.

FOR STUDENTSwith a burning desire to take the centerof the stage, College Players, the dramatic group at Mines, wasfounded in 1927. Always active, the group produces two full-length plays and several one-act plays each year. The twoproductions in 1947-48were "George Washington Slept Here"and "Over 21," both directed by Miss Lucia Hutchins. Membersof the group also put on one-act plays for speech classes.

IN SEPTEMBERwith their best foot forward, the Minesband stepped trimly out on the football field and began a greatyear of activities including parades, pep rallies, and concerts.Under the direction of Charles Senning, the band is makingstrides toward assuming its prominent pre-war position in WestTexas.· With new uniforms and a fast prance, they got off toa good start last fall and stayed there during their outstandingconcerts this spring.

Any Mines student with a yen to discuss the explorationof the human mind may belong to the Psychology Club, newlyformed organization with over 50 members interested in oneof the various phases of psychology. The club held its firstmeeting in January of this year, and since that time has heardmany well-known speakers in this field. Thepurpose of the clubis to bring lecturers to students of psychology and to gatherpsychological literature. Besides monthly meetings with speak-ers, the club also held Saturday business luncheons once amonth during the spring term.

· THE INTERNATIONALRelations Club is an organizationwith a really serious purpose, that of studying internationalpolicies and law in an effort to effect, if possible, an internationalreconciliation. The group is an accredited member of the WestTexas-New Mexico International Relations Conference, whichconstitutes one-twelfth of the conferences meeting annuallythroughout th entire country. Lee Rosch, president of the MinesChapter, is vice president of this region. The group has heldsemi-monthly meetings throughout the entire school year, hear-ing prominent local and out-of-town authorities on internationalrelations.

WEIRD SCREAMS in the night at Kelly Hall, a sobbingwoman ... it doesn't mean mayhem. It's only the RadioWorkshop Players doing their stuff. The Radio WorkshopPlayers, now almost two years old, is the dramatic groupwhich produces, directs, and acts in radio dramas overKVOF. Besides producing plays by well-known auth-ors, the group has also produced original scripts bysome of its imaginative members.

The Baptist Student Union has been an active organiza-tion at Mines since April, 1941,and this year the possbility ofthe group's building its own house on the campus has beenbrought closer. Baptist leaders who visited here advocated thisas well as the instituting of a Bible chair at Mines. Althoughthe Mines BSU is a local organization, it cooperates with thestate group for the purpose of assisting the Baptist students inboth spiritual and social religious activities, and it held manymeetings and several parties during the year.

THENEWMANCLUB,a branch of the national organization,was organized on the Mines campus in 1933.The national groupwas founded in 1905and was named after Cardinal Newman.The local chapter at the College of Mines is sponsored by theNational District Council of Catholic Women, and is under thejurisdiction of Dioceses of El Paso. The membership of the New-man Club is open to all Catholic students on the campus. Amonthly breakfast is held and frequent round table sessions,

ALL SEVEN women's organizationson the campus get together for at leastone thing, to make the Co-Ed Associa-tion one of the busiest Mines groups.The Co-Ed Council. composed of rep-resentatives from each organization,plans for all the big Co-Ed affairs.Their major activities this year were toprovide food for "M" Day, to hold acoffee for freshman girls in October,and to hold one of the most successful"drag your man" dances ever held, atthe Woman's Club last December.

The Prospectorspearheaded the drive to make Minesthe site of the 1949 Texas Intercolle-giate Press Association convention.

EL BURRO,the campus exponent of typical college humor, ispublished once a month. The contents consist of feature articles,jokes, a prize story, pictures of outstanding events, a Chester-field's ad, and other efforts on the part of staff members. Allinterested students are eligible for the staff and the most capablemembers are voted into the Press Club. El Burro takes an activepart, also, in the Texas Inter-Collegiate Press Association'sannual conference, which was held in Abilene at McMurrayCollege this year.
