Russian Music Society

In 1859, Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna (a German-born aunt of Tsar Alexander

II) and her protégé, pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein founded the

Russian Music Society (RMS) aiming at enhancing the quality of both musical

education and classical performances in Russia. By the mid-1860s, the concerts

organised by the RMS had introduced the general public to the works of

Beethoven, Händel, Bach, Gluck, Schumann and Schubert as well as to new

compositios by Russian composers… Furthermore, the RMS was involved in

the establishment of the Conservatories in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Until its

liquidation in 1917, all concerts of the Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow

Conservatoire were performed under the aegis of the Imperial Russian Musical

Society. In 1995 then, the charitable fund “Russian Musical Society” has been set

up. In addition to the popularization of classical music, the recreated RMS

regards as its main task the support of the Great Hall Symphony Orchestra of

the State Conservatory. Conductor Yuri Botnari has been elected Vice-

President. He initiated a series of special recordings that now can be purchased

at the official RMS website.

Sixth Season of Live Broadcasts from New York’s Metropolitan

Opera comes to Record-Breaking End

The sixth season of The Met Live in HD, presented in Germany and Austria

by Clasart Classic, came to an end with two absolute highlights, the first of which

was the premiere of the new Met production of Massenet’s opera Manon in New

York in early April with Anna Netrebko singing the title role. “She’ll seduce you!”

raved the New York Post, and the New York Times elatedly proclaimed this Manon

to be “of rare intensity and emotional depth.” A record was broken at the last

broadcast of the season, with nearly 40,000 opera lovers filling 140 theaters in

Germany and Austria to experience La Traviata with Natalie Dessay live from New

York’s Metropolitan Opera, an event that grossed over one million euros. Clasart

Classic registered over 200,000 viewers during the 2011/2012 season, which

represents an increase of 25% in comparison with the previous year.

Sold-out cinemas can be reckoned with in the coming season as well. On the

programme of the opening night on 13 October 2012: Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore

with Anna Netrebko! Of course, celebrating the Verdi anniversary year 2013, Verdi

will be holding center stage: The programme contains opera highlights such as

Otello, Aida, Rigoletto and Un ballo in maschera…

CLASART CLASSICS

In addition to Manon and La Traviata, Clasart Classic provides about 60 further

outstanding productions from The Met Live in HD series for TV.

market penetration. Despite Apple’s high profile, Android smartphones have picked

up massively in 2011, exceeding Apple’s market share in many of the key markets.

At the time of his death, Johannes Johansson was strongly committed to the

development of the emerging field of artistic research at the Royal College of

Music in Stockholm, as well as nationally and internationally. This work has also included the development of the reflective element within programmes

at all levels, particularly as part of artistic degree projects.

The focus of work at the moment was also the launch of KMH's new building

project, a venture proceeding in close collaboration with the Royal College of

Music's Board of Directors and a number of partners in the business and public sectors. For Johannes Johansson the future premises were an outer

manifestation of the vision of making KMH an optimal centre for higher music education and a central artistic and educational meeting place.
