We have an overall knowledge of how all processes interact on board large cruise ships or navy vessels. It is simple to load a system and update or increase memory with the help of a computer, but there are improvement processes on a ship that are far more complex. Here we have to have a clear view of the future and make allowances in the planning for each vessel’s individual purpose. In addition there are regulations, economic, social

and environmental criteria that also have to be factored in, plus we know that in the ship’s life-cycle other unexpected issues often occur. But values have changed with demands now for a far greater precision and awareness about the effects on environmental sustainability, economy improvements and the long-

air conditioning plant is one of the main consumers on board a ship we design and develop air conditioning systems that can operate with significant less energy. As a result, smaller and lighter engines can be used that in turn deliver on-going savings in operating costs. Furthermore, the space required for the HVAC system may also be reduced by optimising the AC-room as well as the trunk and ceiling arrangements. Depending on the system configuration a large number of ducts and pipes can be completely avoided. This means for example that for cruise ships, we can create space for more cabins – which creates more profit.

There is for example a constant demand for more entertainment media or some even have huge glass exterior walls – yet the energy consumption needs to be decreased. Everything is taken into

account, from very simple means such as the use of LED lighting, right up to the integration of decentralised systems. These decentralised systems provide air conditioning according to the local demand in the specific area.

The ships we build are hotel complexes or leisure resorts. Except that in our case they have the built-in advantage of ocean-going mobility. Restaurants, wellness spas, leisure and sports facilities plus entertainment and shopping centres – in short, everything today’s discerning holiday-maker demands. Next to perfect service and excellent food, the one thing that determines whether passengers become”repeaters“ is the ambient comfort throughout the ship. And here, HVAC is the defining factor. Imtech has full scope knowledge of all the processes on board and has even helped to simplify their integration. Our systems today are much smaller, more powerful and more economical. They

pay for themselves more quickly and can easily be updated or upgraded. Fully customised Cabin Solutions are now a network of decentralised units that offer individual and fully automatic controls which are linked to the central system. Whether the cabin is empty or occupied and even if a balcony door is open or the bath and shower have raised the humidity level, every situation can be detected and controlled by sensors to provide maximum comfort. The all-embracing design of the Fan Coil Unit and the duct system ensures that the air is supplied silently and without draft at the required temperature and humidity. By the improvement of its hygiene-, energy saving-, installation- and weight-properties the latest generation of the Cabin Fan Coil Unit provides new and even more advantages for the owner, the shipyard and the passenger.

you might imagine an ATU (Air Treatment Unit) is an ATU and one AHU (Air Handling Unit) is the same as any other AHU. But this is not the case. just as each navy vessel is built for a specific purpose, so it is with certain components. Requirements can range from heavy-duty, indestructible items to those that are invisible, inaudible or even imperceptible to others. At Imtech Marine, we know from experience that total reliability, extreme robustness and 100 % performance of all components is demanded at all times and that thanks to our on-going stress tests, the shock and vibration resistance of our components have been proved. It is also taken for granted that components have to carry on functioning when the ship may well be on standby for months or when it may have been partially damaged to provide protected areas like citadels – because this could save lives.

For this reason, navy vessels in particular have extreme requirements which need special system solutions. This is our speciality. We select the best components to assemble the AHU or ATU so that it corresponds precisely to the requirements, is easy to install and maintain and is more energy efficient. We know that the optimal combination of components is key so we deliver independent product solutions across an entire range of applications and bring common-off-the-shelf products (COTS) from the civil into the naval sector.

The more accurately and reliably we can forecast the long-term costs of operation, the easier it is to make the right decisions. With large investments such as those in shipbuilding, this is certainly a more secure basis for the ship owner. Although it may not be required initially, Imtech Marine will always consider the entire life-cycle of the ship – from new builds to conversions and the final decommissioning. This also includes making an outdated ship ”greener“ and more competitive which ultimately enhances the profit. 03.Computational Fluid dynamics (CFd) CFD is a numerical simulation which can replicate current flow conditions that are subjected to speed, pollutant concentrations and air temperature disturbances and can verify these within any geometrical space. Even the acoustic calculations of a circuit can be represented. In shipbuilding, the CFD simulation is done by means of turbulent flow models especially in the design of the hull and the optimisation of the propeller and rudder design, or by thermal investigations covering a wide range of engine room applications. Imtech, formerly known as Rud. Otto Meyer (ROM), has been using CFD simulation for more than 20 years.
