It is a common knowlegde that social and emotional skills are more important factors to determine life success than professional competence in any particular field. While it is not likely to convert a reclusive personality into so called a social butterfly, it is still possible to teach children social skills at an early age.

This is a strategic partnership project with five schools from Poland, Italy, Romania, Greece and Turkey which concentrates on social and emotional skills. The project actions perform according to two main aspects - on one hand, the activities and short term exchanges help overcome lack of social and emotional skills at an early age, on the other hand schools search, observe, practice, evaluate and transfer the good practices between each other.

Students who lack social and emotional skills are our project target group. We involve about 100 students in activities which will be applied at every school. The students' age range from 6-13.

Our project allows students to identify their emotions and enable them to use these emotions to “facilitate [their] learning and their ultimate success at school”. Social and emotional skills to be acquired as a result of the project are: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, interpersonal relationships and decision making skills. With these 5 competences, a student will be able to recognize emotions and emotional triggers, make and identify personal and academic goals, perform cooperation and team work and identify ways to resist peer pressure concerning unsafe or unethical activities. obstacles against success at school.

Partners, subtopics and activities

Poland – Transnational Project Meeting

Italy - Self-awareness - Creative Drama Activities

Romania - Self-management - Individual Sports Activities

Greece - Social awareness - Helping Abandoned Children, Visiting Abandoned Children and sharing toys, games, organizing an evening event for them.

Turkey – Transnational Project Meeting

This project is carried out transnationally as having five partners from five different countries provides an international aspect to the studies and the international impact helps achieve the project goal even more effectively.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

• Developing good social skills that students can use in their further life and career. • Developing emotional skills such as anger management and understanding the

connections between their feelings and their life experience. • Overcoming students’ weak social and emotional skills which are easier to notice, since

they are unable to "hide" behind high academic achievement. • Identifying students’ emotions and enable them to use those emotions to “facilitate [their]

learning and their ultimate success at school”. • Integrating these competences into school curriculum with a team work involved by

teachers. At the beginning of the project a self-evaluation questionnaire will be applied to students at schools and their needs will be defined. According to these indicators specific programme will be prepared by the project team and applied.

• Improving students’ self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, interpersonal relationships, decision making skills

• Overcoming lack of social and emotional skills at an early age. • Developing students’ making and identifying personal and academic goals,

demonstrating cooperation and team work, identifying ways to resist peer pressure to engage in any kind of misbehavior.

• Developing ICT and language skills. • Making students take a part in social activities on a more frequent basis. • Increasing positive attitude towards the European project and the EU values

İSTANBUL

Istanbul embraces two continents, one arm reaching out to Asia the other to Europe. In the

city's heart, the Bosphorus strait, course the waters of the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn. The former capital of three successive empires- Roman Byzantine and Ottoman-today Istanbul honors and preserves the legacy of its past while loking forward to its modern future.

Indeed it is Istanbul's variety that fascinates its visitors. The museus, 5 churches, places, great mosques, bazaars and sights of natural beautiy seem inexhoustible. As you recline on the shores of the Bosphorus at sunset contemplating the red evening light reflected in the windows on the opposite shore you understand, suddenly and profoundly, why so many centuries ago settlers chose to bulid on this remarkable site. At times such as these you feel that istanbul is truly one of the most glorious cities in the world.

The view of the Adriatic Sea was wonderful. I had a wonderful time in Italy.

FOSSACESIA COMPREHENSIVE INSTITUTE - ITALY

Our Institute is located in Abruzzo, a region in central Italy.

The Institute is made up three towns: Fossacesia, Mozzagrogna and Santa Maria Imbaro. They are small municipalities near each other.

Population

Fossacesia 6.300

Mozzagrogna 2.400

S. Maria Imbaro 2.000

The district of the three municipalities develops on a large area that includes a coastal area, a flat country, along the river Sangro and another hilly, which is the largest. The population is not concentrated mainly in

ITALY

17

urban centers, but it is distributed in settlements scattered in the countryside. For the socio-economic aspect, the population is mainly engaged in the agricultural sector, although the vast industrial area of the Val di Sangro engages the inhabitants, in a large percentage, in the secondary sector.

The favourable geographic position has allowed the increase in tourism-related activities in recent years, thanks to the presence of the sea (the “Coast of the Trabocchi”) and places of great historical-artistic-environmental interest, such as the Saint John in Venus Abbey in Fossacesia, or the Trabocchi – ancient fishing machines now adapted into restaurants.

Kindergardens are not compulsory; pupils are from 3 to 5 years old .

Primary schools are compulsory; pupils’ age is from 6 to 10 years old

In Secondary schools (compulsory as well) pupils’ age is from 11 to 13 years old

At the end of the Secondary school there is a State exam with five written papers and an oral examination. Passing the State exam is the condition to be able to attend a high school.

Total population of the Institute is 900 pupils.

The school timetable is structured in 40 hours per week in the Kindergardens, and up to 30 hours per week in Primary and Secondary schools. Lessons take place in the morning, while in the afternoons there are several laboratories for the pupils.

The learning environments, which are adapting to the new needs, have Interactive multimedia boards, computer labs and other laboratories (musical, artistic,...), as well as several teaching facilities.

Thanks to the municipalities, which make available the transport, the school organizes numerous guided tours: for the orientation, for the knowledge of artistic and historical places and environmental sites.

In recent years, the school has obtained national and regional funding for extracurricular didactic laboratories and for digital equipment.

Many projects are carried out during the school year, such as “Garden at school”, “Making oil and bread”, “Recycle the waste”, “Newspaper on line”.

First Transnational Project Meeting

BYDGOSZCZ, POLAND, 4th – 8th December 2016

Italy teachers’ experience

My first impression about the school we were in Bydgoszcz was impressive, because there were all the equipment I have ever wished: rehabilitation room for pupils with handicap, dedicated classrooms for single subjects and so on. The most remarkable thing was the big timetable for teachers: it was clear that school is a very complex system, which needs a huge organization to work.

The meeting was successful and very well managed. We also had the opportunity to know the philosophic statement behind the project from the voice of Bassam Aouil, teacher at Bydgoszcz University.

And, of course, the main important thing was knowing each other in person, sharing our ideas and planning the details of the project.

A very special moment happened on Slawomir Borkowski’s home. He and his wife Beata invited all we visiting collegues to have a dinner at their house. A wonderful opportunity to better know each other and to share our emotions round a table, which is always a good place to do this activity!

The visits to Bydgoszcz old town to Gdansk (with the Solidarnosc museum) and the meeting with the vice major completed brilliantly the programme.

Short term exchange

FOSSACESIA, ITALY, 2nd – 8th April 2017

Italy pupils’ experience

When I knew that I would host two Romanian girls, I was so excited! My mother and I prepared everything for their stay. When they came, we suddenly got in touch together and we had wonderful experiences, doing a lot of things all together. My judgement? Top!

Emma, 12 years old The girl I hosted at my home to was Polish. So I asked her to explain me a few words in his language. And it was nice for me when in the evening she phoned her mom and I listened to her: I was surprised to think that Polish is a very beautiful language!

Giorgia, 12 years old The activity I liked most was when we made pasta in a countryhouse near the school. It was like going back to a few years ago, when my grandmother showed me how to make homemade pasta with the “chitarra”.

Sara, 11 years old The poetry lab was my favorite activity. I did not think that I would be able to share my emotions with people from other Countries. Instead, I discovered that we have the same feelings, even if we come from different nations.

Suan, 13 years old

I think it was a beautiful experience. With our new foreign friends we exchanged many emotions, such as: happiness, joy, confusion, shame, joy, doubt, union, dream, love, friendship...

Italy pupils’ experience

When I arrived in Romania, I immediately thought it was a beautiful country. Once at my hosting family I soon realized how nice they are and that I would have enjoyed them.

Generally, in the morning we went to school and we did a lot of activities related with sports. In some afternoons Marco, Rares and I played basketball and football with our new friends and we enjoyed it a lot.

This experience taught me a lot: English language is very important and life is full of things to do: visit other countries, make experiences never tested before and know other people. Moreover, staying abroad for one week taught us to live far from our families and to do everything by ourselves.

When we had to leave, a lot of Romanian guys started crying and so did the Italians. This exchange was the most beautiful experience in my life

Dylan, 12 years old

… now I would like to go back to that week in Romania but I can’t. The greatest memory is when we walked away. I opened the bus window to share a big hug with my big friend Colin. No one wanted to depart from the other. I tried not to cry but a had a terrible stomachache, and for sure I was not hungry

Kevin, 12 years old

Chios

• Chios is situated in the eastern part of Greece. It is the fifth 5th biggest island and has a population of 55.000 people. The main industries are mercantile marine sailing, production of Mastic

• ( chewing gum from bush resin) and tourism.

Places of interest in Chios are Mediaeval villages, archaeological museums, monasteries, pebbly beaches, orange groves/orchards.

What Chios is famous for. It is famous for the local mastic( pistachio-lent) , seafaring tradition/ sailors, medieval villages and picturesque unspoilt beaches and the local tulips.

24

Chios nature

. It features a variety of flora and fauna, like the mastic trees, local tangerines, wild orchids ( there are about 96 species locally in the wild), wild tulips, as well as a variety of insects and animals!!

Our school is situated in Vrontados, a small town 5km away from the capital, with . A great number of people are sailors/fishermen.

The school was built in 1960. There are 94 pupils aged seven to twelve and sixteen teachers

Pupils’ stories on activities accomplished during the Erasmus exchange visits.

Greek pupils’ experiences The mandala of emotions

The portrait drawing

When we went to Italy we did lots of activities, but the one I liked the most was when we had a class with the Italian children; the lesson was about emotions. First, we went into a classroom with computers, we saw some pictures with emotions which we had to describe and imitate. Then, we went to another classroom, and the Italian teacher told us to choose an Italian child and draw its portrait!! When we finished we exchanged them!!

Mary Tsouri, 11 years’ old

While we were in Italy on Erasmus+ programme, we did a lot of activities. In my opinion the most important activity was the one in the Art Lab. We sat one opposite the other and the task was to draw each other’s face. We had to draw all the characteristics/features in detail to look like the real face! In this way we had fun and showed our talent!!

The cup song

Team game in stations/ sports

On Wednesday morning we went to the primary school of Fossacessia. Then, when the bell rang, we got into the classrooms. At that time, they had a music class. At first ,the Italian teacher showed us the cup show. At the beginning of trying doing that, we had difficulty. We watched the Italian pupils doing that and we thought ‘’ How can they do it so fast?’’, but after many attempts, we did it!! Then, we drew a picture for relaxing and we left school. I liked it because I had a great time and I made new friends!!

Antony Ap.

The game I liked the most was the one we had split into groups, one kid from each nationality. Each nationality had the same letters, so as not to be together. Each kid had a letter and they had to form the word EUROPE! After the teams were formed, each team went by different stations/stops, like football, basketball etc. Each team who finished the tasked could repeat whichever activity they liked.

Strategic game

Horseriding in Romania

In Romania we did several activities at the school gym, such as musical chairs and running but my favourite one was a strategic game; we got split into 2 two teams, one attacking and one defending team. We all had plastic shields and swords, but the defenders had more shields and the attackers more swords. Each team had one captain who they had to defend, if a team’s captain was lost/killed, the whole team went down!! The defenders had formations, they should make a square around the captain and the attackers had to split the square of the defenders and eliminate the captain. The team whose captain went down first, lost the game! I liked the game very much and I would like to play more of it!!

• 2 kindergarten classes – aged 3-6 • 21 primary school classes – aged 6-10 • 16 secondary school classes – aged 11-15

They learn in two shifts: the morning one, from 8 to 12 or 1 , and the afternoon shift, from 12 or 1 to 5, 6 or even 7 pm. All the primary classes and the kindergarten learn in the morning. The classes have an average of 25-30 pupils.

The national curricula includes Romanian and Mathematics, the exam subjects for entering a high school, then foreign languages, mainly English, French and German, (one studied from the first school year and the second one from the 5th grade), History, Geography, Sciences (Physics and Chemistry), Art, Music, P.E, Crafts, Computer Science etc.

The classrooms are quite modern, with video projectors, LCDs or Smart boards. There is also a library, with more than 20,000 books, and a Geography lab, a Computer Science one and a multimedia room.

The gym next to our school is a real support in having not only PE classes, but also activities oriented towards developing a healthy lifestyle. We hope we’ll soon have a swimming pool, too, as we have special swimming primary classes

More than 10 years ago, our school implemented the after-school programme for primary school pupils.

Pupils can join clubs, such as chess, drama, painting or dance club and take part in various extracurricular activities, especially during the week called “A Different Week”.

The school has been involved in interesting international projects: Learn and Play (LEAP), Our Day Starts with a Smile, The Rainbow Tree.

First Transnational Project Meeting

BYDGOSZCZ, POLAND,4th – 8th December 2016

Romania teachers’ experience

Before taking off to Bydgoszcz we did some “research” and found out it is one of the largest cities in Poland. We were very eager to discover part of it, to meet our partners, visit school and meet its students. Our expectations were rewarded with extraordinary experiences: a very beautiful city, with impressive architecture, lovely partners, a very big and well-organized school and nice students. The school special equipment for pupils with handicap really amazed us!

Our host, Slawomir Borkowski, together with his team, managed in organizing very interesting activities, meant to help us know each other better, share ideas, plan the project, and so on.

We had the chance of meeting Bassam Aouil, teacher at Bydgoszcz University, who helped us understand the importance of developing emotional skills for our students.

We had great time together and were sure, from that very first step of our project, that our work would be a succeesful and productive one!

Short term exchange

FOSSACESIA, ITALY, 2nd – 8th April 2017

Pupils’ experience

The Troublesome Pasta

The most I liked was when we did pasta. It was amazing the way the cook was working with the dough, as soft as a child cheek. There was flour spread on the table and it looked as the snow in December. We were like ladybugs trying to have our first flight. And as we tried again and again, we finally suceeded. The same like in life, the way to succes was difficult, but the result was very tasty. After doing the pasta we ate it. It was a delicious meal, as it was our work. Our mums' pasta is great, but ours was the most delicious!

Ana

In Italy, I liked the activity called "Emotions in Motion" the most, as we had a lot of funny and entertaining games. I liked when we were blindfold and had to cross past some markers. I also liked the activity when we had to express some emotions. Then we went to the theatre in Fosacessia and had a lot of fun. I'd like to have the chance to go in Fosacessia again and meet my friends Marco, Dylan, Francesca, Paolo, Kevin, Pedro, Alessandro, Eduardo and others. It was a great experience! Rares

My favourite activity in Erasmus+ project was when we were at the theatre. I liked it the most because we had some funny games.

Robert

The activity I liked the most was the one with the theatre visit. We played and learned a lot of interesting things. The funniest moment was when I had to move the arm and my partner had to move his following mine. I hope I'll gave such great time again!

Gabriel

This experience was v ery pleasant and interesting. The

activities, cultural and educative, were very well organized. The most I liked was when we had the trip in the mountains and at the ruins of the castle. This mobility made me more open and careful with my things.
