What is listening?
“Listening ability lies at the very heart of all growth, from birth through the years of formal education. The better those learning skills are developed, the more productive our learning efforts”
(Brown, H. Douglas. Principles of Language Learning and Teaching. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1980: Pg. 10.
What is listening? “ We cannot assume that listening skills
are keen in the first language or that the Students’ listening strategies are efficient. Consequently, teachers must attend both to the general process of listening comprehension and to the comprehension in the foreign language”
(College Entrance Examination Board. Academic Preparation for College : What Students Need to Know and Be Able to Do. New York: College Board, 1987): Pg. 75.
What is listening?
“…the key to achieving proficiency in speaking is developing proficiency in listening comprehension”
(Dunkel, Patricia A. “Developing Listening Fluency in L2: Theoretical Principles and Pedagogical Considerations.” Modern Language Journal 70 (1986): Pg. 100.
TEN QUESTIONS
Students ask questions to guess the identity of a
famous person that the instructor is thinking about. Questions must be questions that can be answered with YES and NO. If a question is repeated by a member of the class that counts as a NO.
The goal of the activity is to guess who the person is before ten hatch marks are placed on the board.
If the class guesses who the person is before ten hatch marks are on the board they win.
La Telenovela: Pasión y Fuego
Students create individual details about the characters in a soap opera based on photographs.
All the individuals need to be connected in some way as the students reveal the plot.
After the plot line is created students need to recall the details about the characters in the soap opera.
Listening to Music
Students receive lyrics to a song with key words missing .
They listen to the song and must fill in the blanks as they listen to the song.
Next they must answer questions based on information related to the song.
The Oscarito: best conversation
Students will create a conversation / role play based on a given situation or topic:
Going to the movies Shopping, etc…Students will be given some time to organize and practice. Each pair will present their role play to the rest of the
class. Students will fill out a chart grading the presentations while they are watching their classmates’ role play and will assign points according to the rubric sheet.
At the end, the class will add up all the points for each role play and the one that has the highest score will win the Oscarito for best plan to go the movies.
