Vision
To be the best sustainable livelihood improvement and poverty reduction women group through NRM in Embu County by year 2015
General Objective
Improve Rural Livelihood and Reduce Poverty through Poultry Farming for Wamiti Women Group in Embu County, Kenya
Specific Objectives
i. Improve rural livelihoods and reduce poverty for rural women
ii. Improve household nutrition
iii. Improve soil fertility using the chicken manure
Beneficiaries/Target group
i. 25 Wamiti Women Group members of Embu County
ii. They are rural women located 30KM from Embu Town
Background/justification
i. Rural women have limited income generating economic activities due to the patriarchal system
ii. Chicken rearing is an accepted women activity in the geographical area and they have control of incomes and benefits from the same

iii Women are currently practising subsistence farming from an irrigation scheme built under MKEPP support
Iv The proposed project will assist the household in terms of income from egg sales, improve household nutrition by eating some eggs while the waste (manure) improves soil fertility for better crop productivity.
Key Lessons Learnt from LR-Nepali. IGA’s may be done individually, cooperative
or a combination of both, Marketing is done individually or collective marketing through cooperatives-Marketing Collectively brings more returns
ii. Support to livelihood IGA’s enhances sustainable NRM
iii. Gender mainstreaming (Active participation of men, women and youth) is prerequisite to sustainable poverty reduction and NRM

iii. High literacy levels (Approx 80% with Secondary School education)

Operation mechanism
i. Each of the 25 group members/farmers will rear 50 chicken within her home
ii. The Group members will market as a group in order to benefit from market price determination,s economies of scale from input supplies as well as access to technical services
NB: The above arrangement is a new approach
Sustainability
i. The women group will be able to sustain themselves from the income and subsequent restocking
ii. Each member will be capacity built on good record keeping
iii. The group will be assisted to develop a strategic and business plan
iv. Adherence to group constitution and by-laws
v. Each household MUST plant trees/crops using the manure
vi. Continuous Technical support from relevant Govt departments
