Nostalgia On 23rd December, 2013, K.J.
Somaiya Institute of Management
Studies and Research once again
opened its doors to host its flagship
annual alumni homecoming event,
the ultimate extravaganza -
Nostalgia.
Shades of the Past, the theme for
Nostalgia-2013 signified a look at
what has gone by. From decorations
and dance themes to promotions on so-
cial media, everything was totally in
sync with the theme for this year.
A large number of Alumni attended
the event with their spouses and family
with the registrations crossing 100. More
than 200 alumni, guests, faculty mem-
bers, staff and students attended the
event celebrating the spirit of conviviali-
ty, connecting with batch-mates, seniors,
juniors as well as the current students of
SIMSR. Now you know why this
event holds a special significance in
the SIMSR calendar - the over-
whelming turnout it receives every
year. The event commenced with
sports organized for the alumni fol-
lowed by registration, campus tour
and a glance at what all the exclu-
sive and non-exclusive committees
of SIMSR had done in the past one
year. The stalls were festooned with
various themes relating to marketin-
-g, international business, retail etc.
making it an interesting watch for the
Alumni. Following this was the Annu-
al General Meeting for the alumni
committee members, alumni and the
college management to discuss and
share the work done by the committee
so far and suggestions to improve the
same. The purpose was to further the
bond between our beloved alumni and
their alma-mater.
As behind every successful event
there is always a hardworking
team, volunteers for Nostalgia’13
left no stone unturned to make this
event a grand success.
The team promises to bring a big-
ger and better event next year!
Merry Christmas and a
very Happy New Year!!
Mementos were distributed to felici-
tate the alumni of batch 1999 and
2000.
The following evening unfolded with
various cultural performances viz.
Bollywood, hip-hop, classical dances
and a hilarious skit by present
SIMSRites. The performances en-
thralled the audiences sitting in the
amphitheater. A dinner for the guests
followed by a DJ party gave a perfect
ending to this eventful day.

Navikaran
With great enthusiasm and
hopes, began the preparations for
Navikaran’13, the marketing fest

terface. It was indeed a pleasure to
get associated with very reputed
brands namely Castrol and Saras-
wat Bank on board, as our Prima-
ry Sponsors. With associate spon-
sorships from Buckets and Tuckets,
9pea, The Chocolate Room, Lak-
me Salon and Desi Connect, Na-
vikaran’13 reached a new Mile-
stone of sponsorship worth Rs. 6
lakh.
The build-up towards Navikaran’13
began way before D-Day with a
series of Online Competitions and
fun activities. To buzz out the ex-
am stress, ‘Why Exams’- A pho-
tography competition was orga-
nized. Chocolaty Moments were
cherished with ‘Admataaz’- A Dig-
ital Poster making competition
and TCR Moments, both in associ-
ation with The Chocolate Room.
Diwali was made more colourful
and bright with the Rang De Diwa-
li- A Photography competition
using Instagram! Marketing Acu-
men of participants was tested
through Jigyasa - the online mar-
keting quiz.
Navikaran’13 took a giant leap this
time as the event was a two-day
affair with ‘marketing’ being the
buzz word all over SIMSR. The
first day of Navikaran was marked
with the final round of RanNiti- the
Flagship Case Study event of Na-
vikaran, in association with Castrol.
The participants had to work on a case
that revolved around the ‘Digital Mar-
keting and Monetization strategies of
Castrol’. The event was a 3 stage
event wherein the participants had to
send a write up for initial selection,
based on which 30 teams from B-
schools across India were shortlisted.
These teams then had to submit a
presentation with the promotion strate-
gies. For the final round (on-campus),
the top 5 teams were shortlisted and
these teams had to deliver their strate-
gies which would help Castrol in their
endeavour to create a larger footprint
in the digital space.

Comstrat
Do you know the first ever case study
competition in the area of communications to be
organized among management students in the coun-
try? Well ‘Comstrat’, a unique concept, now in its
eighteenth year, was pioneered by
DraftFcb+Ulka Advertising along with K.J. So-
maiya Institute of Management Studies & Re-
search The uniqueness of Comstr at lies in the
fact that unlike other case study competitions, which
are in the field of general management/marketing/
finance, Comstrat is the only competition conducted
in the area of advertising and communications. Past
cases like that of Cadbury Schweppes, Marico Para-
chute, TVS, Philips, Indian Oil Corporation, Asian
Paints, Tata Sky, Nokia C3 and Coke Burn, to name
a few, have helped DraftFcb+Ulka develop "real-
life" communication strategy case studies (based on
actual market data) and has been instrumental in the
success and popularity of the competition amongst
management circles.
The event this year was organized on
the 7th December, 2013 in the customary host cam-
pus, KJ Somaiya, Mumbai. The teams that made it
to the finale this year were - JBIMS, IIM Bangalore,
NL Dalmia, SIMSREE, NMIMS and KJ Somaiya.

or. The aim of the case was to develop innovative
communication strategies for a range of products
falling under the Godrej Hair Color segment.

such as Mr. Kapil Dev Pillai (Vice President- Mar-
Ms. Mahuya Chaturvedi (Managing Partner, Cogito Consult-
ing) and Mr. Nitin Karkare (COO, DraftFcb+Ulka), judged
the event. Mr. Kinjal Medh (COO, Cogito Consulting), the
brain behind the inception of Comstrat also graced the occa-
sion with his presence.
After an exhilarating round of presentations, the teams that
topped the charts were – KJ Somaiya (Winners), IIM Banga-
lore (First Runners’ Up) and JBIMS (Second Runners’ Up).
The winners won a cash prize of Rs. 25000/- while the First

Alumniscence -Day 1
On the morning of 14th December, 2013, SIMSR was
gratified to give to its students a session of ‘experience
based learning’ as a part of the Alumni Committee’s initia-
tive, Alumniscence - Guest Lecture Series. The lecture was
delivered by our esteemed alumnus, Mr Nirav Bhatt.
Mr. Nirav Bhatt is presently working in IDFC Securities
Ltd. In the past he has worked as the Senior Sales Associate
at Anand Rathi Securities. He passed out from SIMSR in
2007 and has also worked with other well known organiza-
tions such as J P Morgan, prior to this. His skills and exper-
tise lie in the areas of Equity Research, Investments, Finan-
cial Modelling, Equity Validation, Credit Analysis and
Strategy.
The session started with Mr Nirav Bhatt asking the students
questions so as to understand their background and their
curiosity as far as a career in Finance is concerned. Realiz-
ing the confusion in the minds of students, he motivated
them by saying that it is their time to dream and that they
should not be afraid to dream big. Starting from the very
basics, he touched upon a lot of aspects of finance
like financial market, corporate finance, private equi-
ty, investment banking, capital market, risk manage-
ment etc and also explained the inter-relationship be-
tween these concepts. He highlighted the importance
of an entrepreneur in the ecosystem of corporations
and that the entire system is a business of relation-
ships.
Apart from the financial aspects, he guided the stu-
dents on ways to make the best out of their education.

The Alumni Committee of SIMSR hosted a guest lec-
ture for the Communication students of SIMSR on 16th
November on importance of Consumer Insight in de-
signing Marketing Campaigns. The Lecture was con-
ducted by our esteemed Alumni, Mr Satish Menon,
MMS batch of 1995-97. He is presently working in
Bristol - Myers Squibb( a reputed Pharma Company), at
the position of Associate Director – Marketing. He has a
rich experience of over 15 years in Marketing and Ad-
vertising predominately in the Pharma Sector.
He began with sharing his career and the choices he
made post his graduation in SIMSR. He narrated his ex-
periences in a beautifully beaded story which caught eve-
ryone’s attention. He carried out an interesting activity to
introduce the topic of discussion, Consumer Insight, en-
gaging two volunteers to share their experiences where
they had to convince someone in favor of their needs.
Post this activity he continued going deeper in the sub-
ject and explained the difference between different types
of insights and the ways to acquire them. In the process
he discussed many case studies to explain the subject
better.
We also discussed a live project on consumer insight in
health insurance sector which helped the students get
100% clarity on the subject. He also shared his own ex-
perience in gaining insights for two Pharma products.
There was a lot of interaction between the stu-
dents and the alumni during as well as post the
lecture and Mr. Satish provided apt answers to
all the questions.
The Deep knowledge on Consumer Insights
that the students gained in the two hours of the
session was appreciated by one and all present
in the session. And to everyone’s surprise the
session was houseful.
We on behalf of PG communications Batch
thank Mr. Satish for such and Insightful ses-
sion on Consumer Insight.

Outreach
Imprints — Issue 3 Volume 3
……….……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
As a student of SIMSR how many of us actually catch
the drift that we are in a B-School with tomorrow’s leaders.
Truthfully very few, but when we see our Alumni doing so
exceptionally well, it then dawns upon us that once upon a
time they were also students like us. In fact we have more
opportunities and facilities than they ever had. Hence, on
behalf of SIMSR, the Alumni committee has taken up a
new initiative called “Outreach” to appreciate the work
done and milestones achieved by our Alumni. Through
‘Outreach’ we aim to build relations with the alumni by
meeting and interacting with them along with gifting them
a token of appreciation.
In a first, we had the opportunity to meet our 1989 batch
alumnus Mr. Ramesh Devnani, Vice President, Blue
Star. We discussed about the cur rent happenings of col-
lege and numerous events conducted by ALCOM all year
round. He showed keen interest to be a part of some of the
ALCOM activities. Mr Devnani warmly shared his industry
experience and provided insights to take our Committee to
higher skies.
The next Outreach took place with Ms. Vidya Kamath,
Vice President of Payments and Cash Department of
HSBC, The informal session began with Ms. Kamath
enquiring about the college, alumni committee initiatives
and appreciated our initiative to reach out to alumni
through “Outreach”.
She took us to a walk down memory lane – year 1992, the
time when our college was a two storied building Those
were the days when the out-station students were accom-
modated in the Engineering Hostels or outside campus and
the MBA course comprised only two MMS classes with 60
students each .
Ms. Kamath shared with us her career experiences in dif-
ferent companies, right from her stint with BNP Paribas to
HSBC. Acquiring a sound knowledge about the basics,
gaining expertise in your area of interest, improving your com-
petencies ,in all possible related areas of interest, contributing
positively to the growth of the organization, apart from the allot-
ted work, acquiring information about the domain structure of
your field in other similar organizations and not succumbing to
the negativity or stress and allowing it to affect your work per-
formance. Instead working hard to overcome it were some of the
insights shared by Ms. Kamath, based on her experience, to
guide the juniors in their career post MBA.
The conversation then moved on to ‘Work life Balance’. Her
view was to develop and nurture a hobby along with the work.
Additionally devise a roadmap to your career and assess your
goals at regular intervals to strike a balance between professional
and personal life. She also threw light on how companies are
implementing gender equality measures and encouraging more
women to climb up the corporate ladder. The session ended with
Ms. Kamath promising to be back to college – not as a student,
but as a guide and mentor. A gift was presented to her as a token
of appreciation on behalf of our college. The discussion, then
moved on to the present day about how on her recent visit to the
campus in 2011, she was amazed by the drastic changes in the
college infrastructure as also the facilities like hostel, Internet
Connections and so on.
Apart from Mumbai, it was indeed a great pleasure for us to meet
2 alumni Mr Saurabh Sureka and Mr Ritesh Jain–alumni of
2007 batch during our Outreach initiative in Kolkata.
Both the ‘Outreach’ experiences were highly edifying and engag-
ing and we look forward to more of such endeavors in the offing.
For Timeless anniversaries of our Communion
