SETTING UP PRINTER FLATSBefore you set up printer flats, youll need to workclosely with the printer, bindery, and other vendorsto confirm that the imposition will work withtheir setup. The printer may, in fact, simply tellyou how to set it up.

When setting up printer flats, youll use acombination of controls in the Preview andLayout panels. Then, youll simply click theCreate button to produce a new PDF documentcontaining each printer flat on separate pages.

Note: Throughout this discussion, the term printerflat refers to a collection of pages that will beimaged on one side of a single sheet. The termprinter spreads refers to two pages next to eachother on a sheet of paper.

Step 1: Spec i fy ing a Sheet TypeThe sheet type is the number of pages on eachprinter flat (each side of a sheet): two, four, oreight. The type of imposition you select inImposer Pro 2-Up, 4-Up, or 8-Up controlsthe types of imposition available.

For 2-Up, Standard imposition is available.

For 4-Up, Standard, Work & Turn, Work &Tumble, and Sheet Wise imposition areavailable.

For 8-Up, Standard, Work & Turn, Work &Tumble, Split Web, and Sheet Wiseimposition are available.

To specify a sheet type, open the Imposer Prodialog box and click the Layout tab. Then, clickthe 2-Up, 4-Up, or 8-Up tab.

The 2-Up, 4-Up, and 8-Up tabs let you select a sheet type, which determines the imposition types available.

    6

  • Step 2: Specifying an Imposition TypeSince the type of imposition interacts with thebinding and determines which other options areavailable, its important to understand how eachtype functions.

Standard places the number of pages youspecify for the sheet type on each flat: two for2-Up, four for 4-Up, or eight for 8-Up. Forexample, if you select 4-Up Standard, an eight-page document will yield two uniqueprinter flats, a 16-page document will yieldfour unique printer flats, and so on (providedthat you choose Saddle Stitch or PerfectBound for the binding).

Work & Turn places four (4-Up) or eight (8-Up) pages on each flat, in which the printedpress sheet is turned from left to right. SaddleStitch and Perfect Bound binding will yieldduplicate printer spreads.

Work & Tumble places four (4-Up) or eight(8-Up) pages per flat, in which the printedpress sheet is tumbled top to bottom. SaddleStitch and Perfect Bound binding will yieldunique printer spreads, which are thenduplicated front and back.

Split Web, available only for 8-Up sheets, places eight pages on each flat. Split Weballows you to impose a document over severalforms when printing to a Web press that can beconfigured to run multiple roll stands. In theSheets field, enter the number of roll stands tobe configured. For example, entering 2 in theSheets field will impose 2 forms that make upone 32-page signature. In the Layout panel, you can toggle between the forms Imposer Prowill create.

Sheet Wise places four (4-Up) or eight (8-Up)pages on each flat, but it creates different platesfor each side of the press sheet. Use this optionwhen printing full signatures that yield onesignature out on a Web press. When youchoose Sheet Wise, the Units menu lets youchoose how many units out to produce.

To specify an imposition type, first confirm thesheet type in the Layout tab: 2-Up, 4-Up, or 8-Up.Then, choose an option from the Type menu.

The Type menu, which offers different imposition optionsdepending on the sheet type.

Note: If you choose Sheet Wise, choose an optionfrom the Units menu. If you choose Split Web,enter a value in the Sheets field and click thearrows at the bottom of the Layout panel to viewthe different forms.

For Split Web imposition with multiple sheets, you canuse the arrows at the bottom of the Layout panel to viewthe different forms.

Step 3: Spec i fy ing a B ind ing TypeThe type of binding you choose affects how theprinter flats are created:

Choose Saddle Stitch if the pages will bestapled.

Choose Perfect Bound if the pages will bebound to the cover with adhesive.

Choose Stacked if the pages will be three-holepunched, spiral bound, or comb bound.Stacked is similar to None, except it allows formultiple masters for large format copiers.

Choose None if the pages will not be bound.None offsets any two (2-Up), four (4-Up) oreight (8-Up) pages from the Start Pagespecified in the Preview panel.

    7

  • Note: Choosing Saddle Stitch, Perfect Bound, orStacked enables the Signatures menu in thePreview panel, which allows you to specify howmany signatures to create.

To specify a binding type, confirm the sheet andimposition type in the Layout tab. Then, choosean option from the Binding menu.

The Binding menu lets you choose from Saddle Stitch,Perfect Bound, Stacked, or None.

Step 4: F l ipp ing and Moving PagesOnce you have the pages arranged, you canrearrange pages if necessary and decide whetherpages need to be flipped (head-to-head, forexample).

To flip pages, click the Page Flipping tool in the Layout panel. Click the thumbnails toflip them; in 4-Up Standard, 4-Up Work &Turn, or 4-Up Work & Tumble, you can flipthe top and bottom sets of thumbnailsseparately.

To rearrange pages, click the Page SequenceNumbering tool in the Layout panel. Ifyouve selected None for the binding, click oneach thumbnail to display a menu. The menulets you arrange the pages any way you want. Ifyouve selected Saddle Stitch or Perfect Bound, click a thumbnail to specify the location of page1. Page 1 must remain a right-facing page.

Step 5: Spec i fy ing B leedThe value in the Bleed field specifies the amountof space used to allow page elements to printbeyond the edge of the trimmed page. Enter avalue between zero and the smallest margin. Thevalue you enter in the Bleed field will affect onlythe face of a printer flat (the top, bottom, andoutside page edges). To control the bleed betweenpages for Saddle Stitch or Perfect Boundpublications, refer to Crossover.

Step 6: Spec i fy ing CreepThe value in the Creep field specifies the amountof space necessary to accommodate paper thicknessand folding in Saddle Stitch or Perfect Boundpublications. Enter a value between 144 pt and144 pt. For Saddle Stitch publications, the valuespecifies the distance contents move. For PerfectBound publications, the value specifies thedistance pages move relative to the spine.

How Creep WorksImposer Pro considers the cover of the final piece to be the outermost printer flat while thecenterfold is considered to be the innermostprinter flat. The term sheet is used to representtwo printer flats the front of the sheet and theback of the sheet. The creep increment iscalculated by dividing the user-supplied creepvalue by the total number of sheets minus one.

For example, a 16-page PDF file could yield eightprinter flats, or four sheets. The front of the firstsheet will consist of the first printer flat (pages 16and 1) while the back of the first sheet will consistof the second printer flat (pages 2 and 15). For thesake of this discussion, if the user-supplied creepvalue was 24 pts (we realize this is an extreme) thecreep increment will be 8 pts per sheet (24 dividedby 3).

The amount of creep applied to the outermostsheet will be 24 pts, the amount of creep appliedto the second sheet will be 16 pts and the amountof creep applied to the third sheet will be 8 pts.No creep will be applied to the fourth andinnermost sheet. As our example illustrates, theamount of creep for each successive sheet wasdecreased by the creep increment.

In summary, each page on the outermost sheet ismoved 12 pts (half of the 24 pt creep value for thissheet) away from the spine, each page on thesecond sheet is moved 8 pts (half of the 16 ptcreep value for this sheet) away from the spine, each page on the third sheet is moved 4 pts (halfof the 8 pt creep value for this sheet) away fromthe spine. Pages on the fourth and innermost sheetare not moved.

Step 7: Spec i fy ing CrossoverThe value in the Crossover field specifies theamount of space used to allow page elements toencroach the Gap in Saddle Stitch or PerfectBound publications. (Think of it as a bleed for inbetween pages.) Enter a value between zero andhalf the Vertical Gap value.

Step 8: Spec i fy ing Marg insValues in the Margins area specify the amount ofspace to surround the trim size of the printer flat.Enter values between 0 and 288 points in the Top,Left, Bottom, and Right fields.

Step 9: Spec i fy ing GapsValues in the Gaps area specify the amount ofspace that will be placed between imposed pagesand spreads. Enter values between 0 and 288points in the Vertical, Horizontal, and Spreadfields.

The Vertical field represents the distancebetween the right side of the left page and theleft side of the right page.

A Vertical gap value is required if the flat has acrossover. For Perfect Bound publications, ifyou are creeping in (with a negative value), theminimum Vertical gap value is the width of theCreep value. If youre manually creatingsignatures (for example, if there are differentstocks in the same publication), you can enter avalue in the Vertical field to specify a startingcreep for flats that belong to differentsignatures.

The Horizontal field represents the distancebetween the bottom of the upper printer spreadand the top of the lower printer spread.

A Horizontal gap value is not available for 2-Up flats but is required for 4-Up flats thatbleed.

The Spread field, available for 8-Up flats only, represents the vertical space between the twosets of printer spreads.

In the Layout panel, arrows show the location affected bythe active field (the Spread field).

Step 10: Specifying Registration MarksImposer Pro lets you create new PDF files withoutregistration marks (if the supplied PDF file has itsown registration marks) or with standardregistration marks.

1 In the Imposer Pro dialog box, click thePreview tab.

2 Choose an option from the Registration menu.

the settings in the Preview and Layout panelsof the Imposer Pro dialog box.

3 Click Create in the Imposer Pro dialog box orpress Return/Enter.

Note: Imposer Pro for Adobe Acrobat places eachset of printers marks on a separate layer in thefinal PDF file. These layers can be accessed byclicking the Layers tab in Acrobat and can beturned on or off, giving you complete control overwhich marks will print.

Creat ing Custom Impos i t ionsYou are not limited to a single imposition typewithin a document. You can choose which pagesto impose a certain way, create a PDF file from those, then impose and create a second PDF file containingthe remaining pages. For example, the cover pagesof a document may need to be in a different PDFfile than the interior pages.

Say youre printing a 12-page book. You can createone PDF file containing eight of the pages 4-Upand the remaining two pages can go in a secondPDF file 2-Up. This results in three printer flatsin two different PDF files. If you dont customizethe imposition in this scenario, and create theentire book 4-Up, Imposer Pro will add four blankpages and your resulting PDF file will contain fourprinter flats.

g InDesign: Set all Bleed fields (Top, Bottom,Inside, Outside) to the same bleed amount inthe Marks and Bleeds tab of the ExportAdobe PDF dialog box.

g QuarkXPress: Set the Bleed Type toSymmetric, and the Amount to anappropriate number.

2 Open the PDF file in Acrobat Professional andchoose Document Crop Pages (Document Pages Crop for Acrobat Professional 6.x).

3 Enter the bleed amount (from step 1) into eachof the fields Top, Bottom, Left, and Right.

4 Under Page Range, check the All option toassure all pages are cropped, and choose Evenand Odd Pages from the pop-up menu below it.

5 Click OK, and the PDF should now be croppedto the final trim size. Using Imposer Pro at thispoint should yield the expected results.

Note: No information is discarded when youcrop a page from within Acrobat Professional;cropping only controls the onscreen viewablearea.

ADDING CUSTOM PRINTERS MARKSThis isnt currently a feature of Imposer Pro, butit can be done using a feature built into Acrobatwith relative ease.

1 Create a PDF of your custom printers marks(color bars, logo, etc.) using your favoritegraphics application.

2 Open your imposed PDF in Acrobat Professional.

3 From the top menu, select Document AddWatermark & Background.

  • 4 In the Type section, click the Add a Backgroundoption, and be sure the Show when displayingon screen and Show when printing optionsare checked.

5 In the Source section, select the From fileoption, click the Choose button, and select thecustom marks PDF that you created.

6 In the Position and Appearance section, changethe Vertical Alignment to 0 in from Top, andthe Horizontal Alignment to 0 in from Center. This is assuming the marks will fall at the top-center of the flat. Otherwise, simply changethese settings accordingly.

7 In the Page Ranges section, be sure that the AllPages option is selected. Click OK.

Note: You can add as many marks as youwould like by following these steps again. Each time you do, the marks are embeddedinto your imposed PDF. By changing the PageRanges section accordingly, you can also usedifferent marks for different flats.

SAMPLE IMPOSITION SCENARIOSTo use Imposer Pro effectively, you need to fullyunderstand the types of imposition it offers. Thissection provides a real-world example of theimposition types in action.

Sadd le-St i t ch Scenar ioLets say youre creating printer spreads for a 16-page document. In the Layout panel, click the 2-Up tab and choose Saddle Stitch from theBinding menu. Specify any necessary values forMargins, Gaps, Bleed, etc., then click thePreview tab. To create a new, imposed PDFcontaining all the pages from the originaldocument, click the All radio button. Select anoption from the Registration menu, then clickCreate. This setup creates a new PDF filecontaining eight 2-page printer flats.

Now, lets say the printer requests a four-upconfiguration for the same document. All you dois click the 4-Up tab in the Layout panel andleave the Type set at Standard. All the othersettings remain the same. (If you specified a Bleedvalue, the Horizontal Gap is automatically set totwice the Bleed value.) This setup prints four 4-page printer flats.

Perfect -Bound Scenar ioLets say your document is 116 pages (includingthe front and back covers). This job may requiretwo print runs, one for the cover and one for theguts.

Cover Output: In the Layout panel, click the 2-Up tab and choose Perfect Bound from theBinding menu. To compensate for the spine, enter a value in the Horizontal Gap field. Entervalues in the other fields as necessary, then clickthe Preview tab. Enter 1, 2, 115, 116 in theRange field. Choose an option from theRegistration menu, then click Create. Thissetup creates a new, imposed PDF filecontaining the first two printer flats.

  • Guts Output: In the Layout panel, click the 4-Up tab (if your printer requests printerspreads, click the 2-Up tab). Specify anynecessary values for Margins, Gaps, Bleed, etc., noting that the Horizontal Gap for thespine is no longer necessary. Click the Previewtab and enter 3114 in the Range field.Choose an option from the Registrationmenu, then click Create. This setup creates anew, imposed PDF file containing theremainder of the document in 4-up flats.

Since there are 112 pages of guts to impose ineight-page sheets, and 112/8=14, this setup prints14 sheets. (Imposer Pro would allow you to createimposed PDFs for 15 sheets from this document ifit included the covers.)

Stacked Scenar ioThe Stacked binding option is ideal fordocuments to be reproduced on a large-formatcopier such as a DocuTech, which cuts and collatesas it prints. Say youre creating an imposed PDFfile for a 40-page book (from a 40-page PDF file)which will be printed on a DocuTech to be spiralbound. First, in the Layout panel, click the 2-Up tab and choose Stacked from the Bindingmenu. In the Sheets field, enter 10. Specify anynecessary values for Bleed, Margins, and VerticalGap (Creep and Crossover are disabled forStacked binding).

Then, click the Preview tab. To use all the pagesin the document, click the All radio button. Selectan option from the Registration menu, then clickCreate. This setup creates a new, imposed PDFfile containing 10 four-page sheets. The PDF filecan now be printed to the large-format copier, andthe sheets then cut to size and stacked on top ofeach other to form a 40-page publication, readyfor binding.

Work & Turn Scenar ioLets say you have a PDF file for a four-pagebrochure. The printer is planning to print this 4-upas a work-and-turn job and has requested a PDFcontaining composed flats. In the Layout panel, click the 4-Up tab, choose Work & Turn from theType menu and either Saddle Stitch or PerfectBound from the Binding menu. Enter values in theother fields as necessary, then click the Preview tab.Enter 14 in the Range field. Choose an optionfrom the Registration menu, then click Create.

Work & Tumble Scenar ioUsing the same example as work-and-turn, lets saythe printer requests film for a work-and-tumblejob. The only change you need to make is tochoose Work & Tumble from the Type menu inthe Layout panel. Since Work & Tumble createstwo flats with the same contents, you only need tocreate a new PDF file of one of the flats.

Sp l i t Web Scenar ioIn this example, say youre creating an imposedPDF file for a 16-page book which will be printedto a Web press with two roll stands. Each pressunit will print an 8-page signature. Both rolls areprinted at the same time and collated in line to befinal folded into a 16-page stapled book. In theLayout panel, click the 8-Up tab and then chooseSplit Web from the Type menu, (note: Units willdefault to 2 out), choose Saddle Stitch from theBinding menu. Proceed as usual.
