Important Things To Include In Our Film

By Jackson Davis

Audiences Favourite Films

• Most either liked The Man Who Wasn’t There or Double Indemnity• We like these too• We will try and combine our favourite elements from

both films• We particularly like Double Indemnity’s harsh lighting.

Similar techniques are used in The Man Who Wasn’t There, however, not very often• We love the sound of the voiceover in The Man Who

Wasn’t There

Black & White

• Arguably the most important part of the whole recreation stage• It how the audiences recognises the time period, it

automatically converts the audiences way of thinking back to that era• Really simple and quick to apply, will add lots to the

entire film

Low Key Lighting

• Allows us to create that harsh contrast between light and dark areas• Casts very deep and dark shadows across the scene• Exactly what we are going for• Love the effect that it creates

Voiceover

• Is the most important thing for us• Want it to be spot on• The majority of our audience felt that this was an

important feature

Femme Fatale

• Although the audience feels that this is really important• We want to challenge the convention a little• We think this will make it a little different• Plus, it helps the film to flow better, rather than trying

the cram lots of plot into a 5-minute short film

Cynical Male Protagonist

• Both Characters in the script are very cynical (Donald and Louis)• Donald constantly talks about his life in the voiceover,

how he is doing, why he is sad• Louis doesn’t seem to care about taking the sweet shop

or Donald's girl• This is typical of the time period as men often thought

they had more rights

Urban Settings

• It sells the time period• We don’t live in 1940s America• We might have to recreate some scenes using visual

effects• Probably one of the most crucial things in Film Noir

Page 9: Important things to include in our film

Costumes

• Need to be realistic• Fit the time period• Big coats, dresses, smart trousers, smart shoes, shirts• Nothing too casual

Why the audience is important

• They are the ones watching the film• They are the ones that will be rating and recommending

the film• The main objective is that they like it• They also need to recognise the style that we are going

for• If the conventions are clear then there shouldn’t be a

problem
