Dear Parents – welcome back to the final term of the academic year. This is always a busy

and exciting term and we will soon be sharing dates for sports days and end of year

performances with you.

We are delighted to let you know that Mrs Mason and Miss McFetridge

have both had a baby boy recently and all are doing well.

Year 6 pupils have now finished their SATs and year 2 pupils are currently

doing theirs. All children have been working exceptionally hard and we wish

them the very best of luck.

Finally, a big thank you to Miss McIntyre for arranging the ‘Big Cake Bake Sale’ recently for

the National Deaf Children’s Society and a thank you also goes to everyone who supported

this event which raised a grand total of £568 to be shared between the Society and our

school fund.

Best Wishes - Miss J Harris and Mrs D Williams (Headteachers)

IMPORTANT REMINDER School will be closed to all pupils on Thursday 23 May 2019 as our building will be used as a polling station for the European elections. School will be open as normal on Friday 24 May 2019 before breaking up for the half-term holiday at the end of this day.

Mrs Roberts – Assistant Headteacher

All the classes have made a good start to their new topics to ensure that maximum learning is taking place

during this short half term. The pupil’s writing is showing very good progress.

Please admire the topic work some of the children in 3.1 did over the half term. Photos of them holding

their work are on display outside my office. Well done to Aamna, Zainab, Omari and Hashim whose work is

displayed here.

I want to say a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Year 6 for the conscientious way they have revised for their

SATs which took place earlier this month. They worked hard and did themselves, their parents and school

proud.

Rainbow Day!

On Friday 5 April school held a Rainbow Day in order to raise awareness to Autism. The children enjoyed

the school being so colourful and became more understanding of the condition which a number of children in

school are diagnosed with. As well as listening to the teachers, a number of our autistic children shared

their own experiences of the condition, giving our pupils an insight into the daily struggles that can be

faced alongside the talents autistic children possess.

Some KS2 children spent the previous Monday afternoon making cakes with Mrs Paton-Devine to share with

their parents at Miss Burns’ coffee meeting on National Autism Day itself which was Tuesday 2 April.

During our awareness day, the children produced jigsaw pieces to represent themselves which have been

displayed around school and you can see one of these below with some other pictures of our fun days:

Pirate News

On Tuesday 7 May children in nursery launched their new topic on pirates by having a fun pirate day! All

children and staff dressed up in fantastic pirate clothes and were visited by Pirate Greybeard and Pirate

Liz. They did lots of exciting activities including learning about what life was like for a pirate living on a

pirate ship, they fired cannons and walked the plank, they made their own treasure maps and had a big

treasure hunt looking for numbered clues.

Thank you to all of the parents for the efforts with pirate costumes, the children had a wonderful day.

Poetry Slam

Last half-term a group of year 5 pupils had the privilege of taking part in a Poetry Slam (a spoken poetry

competition) at Sladefield Infant School.

Following their visit to Safeside, the 14 year 5 pupils wrote and performed three poems linked to safety in

front of four other schools. Birmingham’s Poet Laureate, Matt Windle, praised their performance saying

that “From the minute The Oval stood up to the second they sat down everything they did entertained us.

They brought the poem to life by adding actions and through the clever use of their voices.”

The children showed great enthusiasm on the day and should be very proud of themselves! They were a real

credit to the school and to you as parents.

Congratulations all of you!

Buddhist Temple Visit

On Wednesday 8 May, the pupils in year 5 visited the Buddhist temple. Whilst at the temple, the pupils

learnt about the core beliefs of Buddhism and looked at the symbolism of artefacts that can be found

inside the temple. The pupils acted respectfully throughout the visit and were a credit to the school. Well

done year 5.

Fun At Thinktank

All reception children visited the Birmingham Think Tank on Wednesday 3 April. During our visit we

explored the wildlife gallery where we learnt some interesting facts about different animals and got to see

their skeletons. We watched a destination space show where the children were involved in a virtual

experience of travelling to space and dressing up as an astronaut and experiencing what life is like in space

and how it is different to where we live. The Kids City gallery was a popular choice of activity for the

children as they enjoyed role playing different jobs in the doctors’ surgery, dentist, cafeteria and builders

work. The children absolutely loved exploring the outdoor science garden where we investigated some

scientific concepts through the many adventurous opportunities and activities there. All children had a

fabulous time from start to finish, ending with a sing along on the coach journey back to school and lots of

sleepy reception children.

A big thank you to the parent helpers that volunteered to come along with us and all reception teachers

were very proud of how well behaved the children were.
