CLSA Pickleball Score Big at Fall Games Five medals were won by our very own pickleball club members at the Alberta 55+ Fall Games in September. The games, hosted by the Marigold 55+ Association (Zone 6) were a huge success and took place at several venues across the city, including in our own rec centre. Congratulations to the Marigolds planning committee and their amazing volunteers for a fabulous and fun event! And congrats to our winning Pickleballers!

SAGE Seniors’ Housing Forum Each year, the Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton coordinates and hosts this important forum. This year CLSA sponsored this annual event. As part of the trade show, we promoted our association to more than 700 visitors, encouraging them to become members and remain active and ageless. Board member Vic Kowalewich, instructor and member Marilee Barry and volunteer Carol Keeler hosted our trade show table and spoke with more than 300 visitors.

Practice Tai Chi Drop-in Featured Clubs of the Month By Rita Makkannaw

Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. The term taiji refers to a philosophy which is based in the forces of yin and yang and how to use them for feeling balanced, healthy and for longevity. The slow and deliberate movements are

an art form and are most gracious. For the last three years a group of about 12 people gather on Friday af-ternoon to practice. Many like to start with this drop in group so they can get a feel for this physical art. “We all come for the exercise” said practi-tioner Sarah J. Janet M. added “There is a real sense of accomplish-ment.” Everyone loves the laughter and the social aspect of practicing together. Lorne Friesen, the only man there this week added. “It is very enjoyable to be in the presence of these lovely ladies.” Another great activity

Mahjong Drop-in Activity By Rita Makkannaw

Mahjong is known to have originated in China. It is played by matching tiles of different categories in various ways depending on which version is played. The word mahjong means sparrow and the shuffling of the tiles is called twittering of the sparrows. Mahjong is played at the center by matching tiles in pairs, triplets and runs until all the tiles in a person’s hand has been matched up. It is a fast-moving game, great fun and a wonderful social activity. “Anyone is welcome in our club and we will teach those who wish to join how to play. “There is a lot of detail involved, but we are a patient bunch,” said member Olga the coordinator of the club. Everyone nodded in agreement. It has a great history and is played by thousands around the world today. Do come and see if it is something for you.

A Visit with City of Edmonton Councillors By Rita Makkannaw Andrew Knack, city councillor responsible for seniors on Edmonton city council as well as Bev Esslinger and Scott McKeen were in attendance at a forum at the Central Lions Senior Center on Tuesday Sept 25

th. A lively discussion

was had with much input from the audience. Andrew Knack opened with an invitation for feedback in regard to the upcoming budget which is currently being dis-cussed and will affect us all for the next four years. Edmontonians can give their input by going to Edmonton.ca/mybudget to fill out a survey or can contact your ward councilor’s office. An open public forum is being held October15th. There was much dialogue about parking issues in general and in particular the lack of parking at the site of the new downtown museum. The councilors acknowledged the problem and they will work together with the province to improve the situation. In the meantime, there is parking available in the city hall parkade. There was concern expressed about taking away free parking for the handicapped. The councillors assured the seniors it isn't in the works at this time but cautioned that it might come up in the future. Snow removal received considerable discussion as it is of very high priority for pedestrians in general and for seniors in particular. For anyone who needs help to clear their sidewalks there is a program in place called Snow Angels who will help. For more information call 311 or send an email to [email protected]. Difficulties regarding the DATS issues are now being discussed with a meeting taking place October 15

th. It is led by councilor Esslinger, so please feel free to contact her office or 311 for more

information and to share your ideas and concerns. We also discussed bicycles riding on sidewalks and rehabilitation of back alleys in mature neighbourhoods. Susan Mann reminded the councillors that we still want ETS to provide a commuter bus from Kingsway transit centre to our south entrance. She also asked that they keep the CLSRC basement rehab a priority in the upcoming City budget talks. Scott Mckeen reminded us that we are a city in transition and that creates many challenges. He also reminded us that if we have city related problems we should first call 311. They will forward your issues to the proper department. If you do not receive satisfaction going that route, please contact your local ward member on city council. They will be pleased to help in any way they can. Appreciation was expressed to the councilors for taking the time to come out and give us the opportunity to share our concerns, and the members for coming to this most important event.

The Center provides a myriad of music opportunities. Members can take group and one-on-one lessons, join one of our five great bands, or sing with our Homegrown Harmo-nies each Friday afternoon. If you have just decided to fulfill a dream to take up an instrument, there are beginner lessons in guitar, ukulele, piano and a brand-new addition to our repertoire, a two-day African drumming workshop (see the Fall Program Guide, page 39).

Our music groups include: the Edmonton Firefighters Alumni Band, Edmonton Schoolboys Alumni Band, Young at Heart Band, Lions Big Band and the Swingtime Band. Several will participate in the Musical

Extravaganza event on October 28th. This is a chance for band members’ friends and families can listen and appreciate the wonderful musical talent at CLSA. Tickets are reasonably priced so the whole family can come and enjoy! Whether you are a budding musician, or simply enjoy the vast variety of music courses available, CLSA has something just for you!

Exploring Interest in a Social Club By Rita Makkannaw

Are you looking for a social activity one evening a week? A new social club may be available if there is enough interest from members. The club activities could include: movies, board games, guest speakers, wine tastings, theatre outings or whatever the group decides. This club would be self-driven, so if anyone would be interested in volunteering as a coordinator please contact Susan Mann. If you are interested in joining, add your name to the list at the front reception desk.

This would be a great opportunity to have an

evening out, to connect with like-minded people

and to find companions with common interests.

Volunteering at the Centre The winner of the $25.00 gift certificate for September is the very lucky Rita Makkannaw! You’ll recognize her writing in many articles that appear in this publication. The certificate can be used toward any CLSA program or activity. All volunteers who donate five hours/month, track and submit their hours are entered into a draw for a $25 CLSA gift certificate. It’s a small token of our appreciation for the time and effort you put into our organization. Watch this space for your name! To become a volunteer, applicants are interviewed, complete a criminal record check and attend three hours of City and Association training. The next volunteer intake training is on Nov. 7th at 10:00 am with a facility tour at 1:00 pm.

We Need You! Volunteers are needed to fill the following positions: Ambassador - Greet guests, provide facility tours, act as host for General Interest presentations, and more. Front Desk Reception - Greet guests, answer phones, support reception and general administration activities. Gallery and Gift Store Attendants - Assist guests as they view the artwork and shop for locally sourced art and craft products. We also need those with experience in retail, inventory management and contract development. Fitness Centre Reception - assist with the administrative activities in the Fitness Centre by issuing passes, collecting fees, answering questions, scheduling orientations, and more. Additional volunteers are required to help us manage our database using Microsoft Excel.

Call Tracy at 780-442-0935 to get the process started.

Volunteer Training Sessions If you host a drop-in group or volunteer in general, you must complete the City of Edmonton / CLSA volunteer training session. Part One (10 am) explores volunteering in general and Part Two (1 pm) is a facility emergency and safety tour. These sessions are hosted by City of Edmonton Facility Manager, Dawn Linman, and CLSA Volunteer Manager, Jerry Letal. The next training sessions is November 7th. Register with our volunteer coordinator, Tracy Thorne at 780-442-0935. Volunteers who complete the training session track their volunteers hours. Each month, one volunteer wins a monthly $25 gift certificate which can be used towards annual membership, program and special events registration. All volunteers who donate at least 25 hours/year are invited guests at our annual Volunteer Appreciation event (May 2, 2019).

Thank you, to all our amazing volunteers!
