Our planned response to these situations has been enhanced over the years as we added in text and on-line communication with parents and, more recently, CCTV security cameras that will enable us to monitor the school in a lock down situation. Note that the recommended time for this earthquake practice is 9.15am but we are doing ours at 8.55am so our senior athletics event can start on time at 9am. Now, the challenge for all of us is to discuss our family emergency responses over one of the coming weekends! Judy Parr

Message from the Principal

Our school has signed up to take part in ShakeOut, the annual international earthquake practice, on 15 October. With a little over two months to go until ShakeOut day, the organisers report that they are approaching the national target of 1.5 million registered participants. The reason for teaching emergency drills, such as Drop Cover Hold, is outlined in Amanda Ripley’s book ‘The Unthinkable: who survives when disaster strikes and why’. Ripley outlines three response stages (1) denial - this can’t be happening to me; (2) deliberation - what should I do; (3) action - do it. By practising emergency procedures the intention is to minimise or eliminate stages 1 and 2 and move straight to stage 3, action. As well as planning school earthquake procedures we encourage families to practise their own procedures at home. You can access information and ideas on http://www.shakeout.govt.nz, the ShakeOut website. It is also good to cover the other key emergency situations at home. The next Family and Friends meeting is on Tuesday 1 September at 7.30pm. Everyone is very welcome to attend. This is a great way to be involved in your school and make new friends. We hope to see you there.

Park safely and keep our kids safe How you park can affect the safety of others, especially the children. Please think carefully when parking around the school to avoid being a danger to children. Over the past few mornings there have been two car accidents on the roads around our school. We always encourage our parents to take their time when dropping off and picking up children at school. Please think carefully about how you drive and where you park. Your actions affect other users of the roads and footpaths so please reduce your speed enough that you can stop safely if needed, without a collision. Our children are very young so we need to look out for them. Again, we encourage our school community to think of safety first to make sure our children and adults are kept safe.

Newsletter Advertising If your business is interested in placing a one off or regular advertisement in our newsletter please contact Sandy Walker in the office for more information. Daffodil Week this year is from August 24 to August 28. Daffodils will be on sale from August 24 at the school for a gold coin.

Girls Soccer Team

Well done to our girls’ soccer team, which won against Shelly Park (again) 6-4. Keep it up girls.

Rugby Team We played a good game against Cockle Bay on Friday, but they were the better team on the day. Good luck for the next game boys.

Kyle even managed to hurt his arm for the team!! Diagnosis: badly bruised!

Pakuranga Primary Schools Dance Festival!

The junior, middle and senior dance groups performed at the Howick Pakuranga Primary Schools Dance Festival on Wednesday and Thursday night last week. They received rave reviews! ! The groups will be performing on Friday 21st August at our next whole school assembly. It was great to see so many parents at our maths open morning on Wednesday. We hope that, on your visit to the classrooms, you saw some great maths learning in action.

REMINDERS ABSENCES! (! Please notify the office by 8.30am if your child is going to be absent. Phone 274 0637 Ext 1 and leave their name and room number. The answer phone is available 24 hours a day. We really appreciate that so many parents do use this means, or our website, to notify us.!

ARRIVAL!AT!SCHOOL!D!The optimum time for students to arrive at school is between 8.20am and 8.30am. Arrival after 8.40am is a real problem. Children who arrive late are disrupting their own learning and the learning of their peers. We are very concerned about the number of late children at the moment and will be engaging the School Attendance Service (previously called the Truancy Service) to work with families where children are arriving late on a regular basis.

Bird Colouring Competition Winners Well done to Jamie Hall from Room 19 who came first and Tayla Penman Gates from Room 1 who came third. It would have been hard to judge as there were so many really good pictures from our school, without even looking at entries from other schools.
