Protection o biodiversity o the Sit-ut island group is an important link in theprotection o the exceptional richness o biodiversity o the entire Adriatic, andrelies on the conscientious behaviour o us all. Thereore you are kindly asked:

Not to throw rubbish into the sea or dump it in nature. Rubbish containers are lo-cated in the inhabited bays.

Avoid anchoring whenever possible. Anchoring mechanically de-stroys the seabed and damages the population o Mediterraneantapeweed. Anchors and anchoring chains can be the means otransporting the invasive species into an area where their expan-sion endangers the existing biodiversity. Thereore we kindly re-

quest that you inspect your anchor-ing equipment beore submerging, remove the species shown here anddispose it in the rubbish containers.

Not to set open re in nature.Firesthreaten the vegetation andtraditional sheep-arming,valuable elements o the characteristics o the Sit-ut island group . Due to thelack o running water, it will be very hard to put out res.

Not to damage the plants. Many species present in the Sit-ut island group are rareand endangered.

DOLPHINS ARE NEAR!!! This aquatorium is a priority habitat or the protection othe bottlenose dolphin. When approaching them, reduce the speed o your vesseland do not move towards them, rather ollow the direction o their movement anddo not come closer than 100 m. Sudden changes o direction or speed, and pre-sence o a large number o vessels disturbs them!

The Sit-ut island group occupies the north eastern part o the Kornati archipelago. It con-sists o2 islands, 38 islets and 8 rees with a total surace area o195 km2 and a total coastallength o about 95 km. The Sit-ut island group, as well as the entire Kornati archipelago ol-lows the general direction o the Dinaric massi (northwest southeast). The land consistso limestone and abounds with typical karst orms caves and pits.

Throughout its long history, the entire archipelago has been a signicant pasture and sh-ing zone, while the cultivation o olives has been limited to smaller, more easily accessiblearable suraces. Numerous traditionally built stanovi, pens or livestock and berths orsmall boats, today bear witness to such arming activities in the past.

The cultural heritage, but also the biological and geological characteristics o the entireKornati archipelago were recognised back in 1967, when the entire archipelago was pro-claimed a protected natural area. Ater announcing the Pikera and Kornati island groupa national park, the remaining islands Sit-ut island group remained at the same levelo protection, and according to the new categorisation o protected regions this is now thecategory o important landscapes.

The important landscape Sit-ut island groupis an area o great biological diversity, land-

scape and cultural-historical value, intended or rest and relaxation.

curry plant (Helichrysum italicum), sage (Salviaofcinalis),mastic (Pistacialentisc us) and terebinth (Pistaciaterebinthus ).

Lattice sea-lavender (Limonium cancellatum) is an endemicvariety which grows in the cracks o coastal rock aces, in thezone o airborne salt and splashing o waves. Due to its at-tractiveness or years now it has been collected like a souvenir;thereore the species is rare today.

Medicinal sage (Salvia ofcinalis) is a wild growing woody bush wdark blue-purplish owers which can grow up to 40 cm. It growon the dry and sunny slopes o the Kornati islands. All parts othe plant have a strong aromatic scent. The medicinal propertieso this plant have been known rom ancient times, when Romanwriter and scientist Plinius named it Salvia, ater the Latin wordsalvus, to heal.

Mediterranean tapeweed (Posidonia oceanica), which is also calleseagrass, is the most important element o biological diversity o tentire Adriatic. This variety represents the habitat, eeding place ahatchery o numerous sea organisms. It enriches the sea water sediment with oxygen and that is why it is oten called the lungs osea. With its roots it astens the sediment and prevents it rom bswept away, while its long leaves reduce the strength o the waveprotect the coast rom erosion.
