TheGCCLiteracyforAllframeworkhasbeendesignedtotakefullcognisanceoftheintentionsandaspirationswithinCurriculumforExcellenceLiteracyandEnglishframework.Inaddition,itmakesclearlinkswithCfE benchmarksinordertohighlightendoflevelstandardsandtosupportteacherjudgementastoachievementofalevel.

Itisimportantthattoensurebreadth,challengeandapplicationtherearenumerousopportunitiesgivenforchildrentodevelopskills.Theframeworkaspects(reading,writingandlisteningandtalking)havebeenpresentedseparately,inlinewiththepresentationofLiteracyandEnglishinCfE.However,thethreeaspectsinterlinknaturallyinmanyplacesandpractitionersshouldmaketheselinkswherepossibleand‘bundle’ExperiencesandOutcomes.Linkswithrelevantexperiencesandoutcomeshavebeenmadeonthe‘SupportingGuidance’pages.Forexample,makingnotesappearsinreadingandwritingastheskillscanbeintegrated.YouwillnoticethatsomeofthelinkstoExperiencesandOutcomesstartwith‘ENG’andsomestartwith‘LIT’.Thoselabelled‘LIT’areEsandOsthattransferintoarangeoflearningandlifeskills.Literacyistheresponsibilityofall,andisclearlynotedinCfEguidancethattheskillswithinthe‘LIT’EsandOsshouldbepractisedinavarietyofbothfamiliarandunfamiliarcontexts.Crucially,linksshouldbemadeacrossthecurriculumandthisissignpostedinthe‘SupportingGuidance’pages.

Pleasenotethefollowinghighlights:

TheLiteracyforAlltrackershavenot,forobviousreasons,beendesignedinexactlythesamewayastheGlasgowCountstrackers.ProgressioninLiteracyisnotstrictlylinear.Forexample,inNumeracyitmaybethecasethattoprogressinunderstandingoffractionsachildstartsbyexploringhalvesbeforemovingontotheconceptofquarters.ForsomeoftheLiteracypathwaysinthetracker,thisprogressionapplies,e.g.inToolsforReadingchildrenneedtohavephonologicalandphonemicawarenessbeforetheycanreadaloudwithconfidenceandexpression.However,inFindingandUsingInformationforexamplethepathwaysstartbylookingatfeaturesofnonfictiontexts,thenthenextboxlooksatfeaturesoffictiontexts.Thesedon’thavetobedoneinanyparticularorderandwillcomedowntoprofessionaljudgementandresponsiveness.

TheCfEPrinciplesandPracticepaperclearlysetsoutthatprogressioninLiteracywillinvolvefourkeyaspects:thecomplexityoftexts,continuousbuildingandconsolidation,applicationandthedegreeofindependence exhibitedbychildren.Theseaspectsshouldberecognisedalongsidetheprogressionstepsoutlinedinthetrackers.Thetrackersthemselvesrefertocomplexityandindependencebyusingphrasessuchas‘withincreasingindependence’and‘increasinglycomplextexts’.Theyalsobuildonandconsolidatepriorlearning,andrefertoapplication.
