PE/Sport Report September

New Jerseys Have Arrived

After a lengthy design and manufacture process, our new rugby league jerseys have arrived. These jerseys are to be used mainly for the older boys, with us looking to get a matching smaller set of jerseys for the younger guys next term. These will be used in 2015. The purchase of these jerseys and the forthcoming smaller set would not have been possible without the donations of one of our generous community supporters, who wish to remain anonymous.

Junior Gymnastics

For the first few weeks of the term, all year 7-10 classes participated in gymnastics unit and assessment. For many students this was their first experience with gymnastics and it was pleasing to see the majority of the students attempt different skills and put together a routine on a chosen piece of apparatus. Over the course of the unit, students learnt the basics of balance, spring, landing, rotation and locomotion, and apply these to various apparatus including; floor, beam, mini-trampoline and parallel bars.

Last newsLetter for term 3 This is our last newsletter for this term we have had a fantastic term at school even though it has gone by fast. Some of the highlights of term 3 includes: NAIDOC Week activities, our breakfast club, the totem pole, Aboriginal students success in subject awards and achievements, our girl’s chick club, Wee Waa Public School, completion of PLPs, Year 12 final school term, Tjnisha Toomey’s achievements in dancing, Valerie Booby’s leadership role as vice-captain for the school, Best Employment and other agencies for their support, Aboriginal mural by Cliff Toomey, homework centre, visits from our local Elders and their support. I would also like to thank our principal, Mr Neil Schneider, for working with us to achieve our goals and successes.

Best empLoyment In April, we applied for funding through Best Employment ‘BEST in the Community’ program for our breakfast club. On Wednesday 10th September, we were informed by Sean Russ from Best Employment that we were successful in receiving $1500. This money will be utilised for resources in the ‘Binaalbaa’ Community Room. I would just like to thank Best Employment and other interagencies that support our school, without your valued contribution to our community room and students this would not be possible.

Good Luck to tjnisha toomey I just want to say ‘Good Luck’ to Tjnisha Toomey on her second trip to Sydney all this week; she will be performing at the University of NSW with the Bangarra Dance Company. Unfortunately Tjnisha will not be here to celebrate her muck up day with her peers, which she was so looking forward to. She had lots of ideas for it. She will also be unable to attend her Year 12 formal assembly. She is one of our Aboriginal students who has successfully succeeded her Year 12 schooling and I am very proud of her achievements. She is a quiet achiever that has excelled in her studies.

conGratuLations to our aBoriGinaL students in year 12 To all our Year 12 Aboriginal students who have finished their schooling, I would like to congratulate them on their achievements and hope that they succeed with their future life outside of school.

Breakfast cLuB Last Friday 12th September we had our last breakfast club for this term and it was another successful morning with a large turnout of students. It’s always good to see students start off their day with a healthy nutritional breakfast as it helps them perform better at school and do well in their classes. I would like to thank Kate Battustuzzi, Rachel Freer, Naomi Nean, Robyn Booby, Anita Wright and other outside community groups for helping me this term to successfully run our Breakfast program. Your help and support is greatly appreciated.

LocaL aecG news

Last Thursday 11th September, a scheduled meeting for our local AECG had to be postponed due to not having a quorum. However, another AECG meeting has been set down for this Thursday 18th September at 4:00pm at the Wee Waa Local Aboriginal Land Council Office. I would like to encourage all Aboriginal parents/carers to please come along and support their local AECG.

Thank you Wee Waa Public School and the kindergarten class for inviting me to share my knowledge of my culture and strengthening the relationship between the schools. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I was presented with an Appreciation Award. It made me very proud for working alongside these students: I hope they enjoyed themselves also. Thank you to the teachers and Kate Battustuzzi for supervising on the day.

SRC Report September

Hope 4 Soap

The SRC recently held a fundraising day and BBQ to raise money so that we can place a soap dispenser in each of the junior boys and girls toilets along with the senior boys’ and girls’ toilets.

In the past, some students have vandalised these facilities. We hope by bringing this issue to the attention of all the students and using their support to fund the initiative, that the students will take responsibility for their actions in the toilets.

Over the course of the day we raised just over $250, which should be enough to fund soap and soap dispensers for all of the student toilet facilities.

Footy Colours Day

On Friday 12th September, the SRC and the school participated in footy colours day. This is where students can wear their favourite footy (or sports) team jersey or colours and participate in footy themed activities. On the day we held a BBQ selling bacon & egg rolls, had an out of uniform donation drive, a goal kicking challenge and a ‘hole in one’ contest. The funds raised from this year’s footy colours day will go towards cancer research and Connie Smith, who is attempting a 60k charity walk in October on the Gold Coast to raise awareness of Breast Cancer.

Wee Waa High School Welcomes Year 6

On Thursday 4th September, 40 Year 6 students from Wee Waa Public School, St Josephs and Namoi Valley Christian Schools attended a two hour transition to high school. They were welcomed by their future Year Advisor, Miss Freer and were taken on a tour of the school, inspecting the facilities with the help of a senior volunteer Samantha Carrett.

The students were then divided into two groups for some taster lessons in Science and Technology-Timber. In Technology, the students constructed a tic-tac-toe game. This involved them marking out and drilling the board game, as well as sanding and finishing the pegs. In Science the students got to light a Bunsen Burner for the first time. They were also amazed by demonstrations involving the production and combustion of hydrogen gas from various metal. Culminating with a big bang!

The students all agreed that the classes they took were much more interesting than recess time and are all very excited about becoming members of the high School. Mr Catt and Mr Druce both enjoyed working with the upcoming cohort and both Ms Sloan and Kate agreed that we have an exciting group coming to join us next year.

The students will return to the high school next term for Multicultural Day and two full days where they will experience a range of subjects, as part of the ongoing transition program.

Ag Roundup The Wee Waa High School Show team has had a busy, exciting and successful week away with Tracey Mortimer taking 3 girls to attend the National Dorper Show on Tuesday September 2nd – Thursday September 4th. The girls, Sarah Stanfield, Caitlyn Galagher and Emily Shearin assisted the Bilgamma Dorper Stud operated by the Hibbens family in preparing and showing their sheep at the Show held in Dubbo. The girls put in a lot of extra hours going out to the Hibbens farm on the

weekend and Monday beforehand to train the sheep to halter and wash and dry the sheep til they were as white as snow! As well as the Hibbens family having a successful show, Emily Shearin was awarded 1st place in the Junior Handling competition held at the show. Well Done Emily! Following the Dorper Nationals the girls were joined by Verity Gett, Maddison Galagher, Maddie Lee Dewson and Amelia Cruickshank to

attend the National All Breeds heifer Show, also held at Dubbo from Thursday- Sunday afternoon. It was a busy time with the girls learning every aspect of cattle showing including presenting the animals- blowdrying and hairstyling the heifers! They also participated in parading and junior judging demonstrations on the Friday. Saturday saw the beginning of the Herdsman competition where the girls were required to do all aspects of the animals show preparations and care, and parading unassisted.

Page 8: Important Dates - Wee Waa · the help of a senior volunteer Samantha Carrett. The students were then divided into two groups for some taster lessons in Science and Technology-Timber

The team performed wonderfully, getting up at 4am on the first morning to make sure their cattle were fed, watered and stalls cleaned up and well presented. The Junior Judging competition was held on Saturday morning. The Wee Waa Show team is to be commended, with 4 of our 6 girls successfully reaching the finals in our first competition against much more experienced schools (there were over 250 students attending!). Emily Shearin gained 3rd place in the Junior Judging in her age class. Well Done Emily! Next was parading of the stud heifers. All of our team did a tremendous job in preparing and presenting the Murray Greys. Caitlyn Galagher was leading the heifer named Reserve Champion in its class. Well Done Caitlyn!

The Wee Waa High School Show team were generously provided with Murray Grey cattle to Show and many thanks to Mr Steven Martin for giving us this opportunity and experience. The girls are already excited about next years event even with the 4am starts! Things have been busy on the Ag farm whilst we were away. The chicks we hatched are now 4 weeks old. We have unsexed isa brown cross chicks for sale- $10 each. Please see Mrs Verity Gett if you are interested. We also have bantam chicks hatching from today so will be looking to sell them in 4 weeks time. Chickens have been a hit with all grades, and a busy enterprise. The ag classes are running another chicken trial, with thanks to Mrs Anna Madden. We have 2 lots of 8 1 week old chicks in our brooder- 4 isas and 4 meat chooks and are feeding them two different diets comparing the weight gain. It is a great visual way for the students to see the different development of the different purpose chickens. Verity Gett
