Dear Parents/Caregivers Book Week We celebrated Book Week last week on the theme of “Curious Creatures & Wild Minds”. What a delight to see the Kindy students in their book week costumes on Tuesday, 25 August. They proudly showed off their costumes and talked about their characters. It was lovely to join in with KT doing the ‘Hokey Pokey” dance and share in the joy of Book Week. Thank you to all the Kindy staff for their time in assisting with the coordinating of this event. On Friday, 28 August we were dazzled by the creative efforts of our students from Pre-primary to Year Six and entertained by the video of the staff as they performed the Monster Mash. A special thank you to Mrs Leatherbarrow and Mrs Leverence for their ongoing excellent work in coordinating the Book Week activities. Also thank you to Mrs Johnson in the school canteen for getting into the Book Week spirit with offering “curious creatures” specials.

New Families We welcome Olivia Ellison (1K), Isabelle Goodwin (3yr Olds) & Jessica Spry-Stol (3Yr Olds) and their families to St Joseph’s. We trust they will soon feel a part of the St Joseph’s school community. We also welcome Mackenzie Mann (3yr Olds). Mackenzie has a brother who attends Pre-primary.

Seasons For Growth The Seasons for Growth programme concluded with the Celebration Session that was held on Monday, 24 August. A special thank you to Ms Trimboli and Miss Dickinson for all their work in coordinating and facilitating this programme.

School Car Park I appreciate one of the most frustrating areas within a school is the carpark. Unfortunately as space is at a premium it is very difficult to cater for the amount of traffic without having to sacrifice classroom sizes or playgrounds when schools are built or extended. As with all our actions we have the safety of our students at the centre of all our decision making. Our duty of care of the students is paramount to ensure that children learn and function within a safe learning environment. There are two options available to parents in regards to collection of and dropping off students – drive through or park and collect, and we ask that you follow these processes appropriately. If your child is being collected by someone else can you please inform them prior of the carpark rules. Unfortunately we cannot make exceptions for the rules regarding parking, parents walking students to parked cars or the drive through protocols as this creates misunderstandings and does not help in the flow of traffic or the safety management of all students. When staff approach you to remind you of the rules this is with the students best interests at heart. The staff are following the school code of conduct and fulfilling their duty of care which aims to keep all community members safe. If you need to discuss parking matters further please do not hesitate to make an appointment with me.

Busy Bee - Saturday, 4 September Thank you to Mr Presser for coordinating the upcoming Busy Bee on Saturday, 4 September. Any time that you may have between 8.00am to 9.30am on this day would be greatly appreciated. Laying stepping stones and digging in poles are the main tasks on the day. The saying “many hands make light work” is certainly relevant in regards to Busy Bees. Additional information is on page five, including how to RSVP.

Kindy and Pre-primary Sports Morning Information was emailed to families (Kindy & Pre-primary) on Tuesday, 1 September regarding the scheduled Sports Morning and Colour Fun Run fundraiser on Tuesday, 8 September. Please check your emails to ensure you have the information regarding the events and the morning tea requirements.

Athletics Carnival - Years One to Six

Jumps Day – Wednesday, 9 September. (Years Four to Six)

Athletics Carnival – Friday, 11 September. (Years One to Six)

Jumps Day & Athletics Carnival Day - Years One to Six Our athletics carnival is fast approaching and it is great to see the children committed to trying their best in preparation for their events. This year the students are able to wear plain (no print) faction shirts on the Jumps Day (Years Four to Six), Wednesday, 9 September and Athletic Carnival day (Years One to Six) on Friday, 11 September to help with visibility and organisation on the day. An information sheet regarding the running of the day will be emailed to families with students in Years One to Six next Tuesday, 8 September. Please come along in the colour of your family’s faction and enjoy the fun of the day. A friendly reminder that due to COVID-19 Phase 4 restrictions please be mindful of the social distancing requirements. An important reminder that families stay in the designated family areas and do not go onto the track as this causes safety concerns and can make the running of the day very difficult.

Colour Fun Run Fundraiser At the conclusion of the Kindy & Pre-primary sports morning and the Year One to Year Six Athletics carnival days the Colour Fun Run fundraiser will be held. Thank you to everyone who has pledged money for this event - it is greatly appreciated. Further information regarding this event is on page five.

Athletics Carnival Day Lunch Orders - Years One to Six A lunch order form was issued to the eldest child in each family last week. If your child would like to place an order for lunch can you please complete the relevant areas and return the form to school. Please note the closing day for lunch orders is next Monday, 7 September @ 9.30am. Online orders will also close at 9.30am. For your convenience a copy of this form is on page five. Unfortunately we are not able to accept late orders.

A friendly reminder that there will be no canteen service available to Pre-primary and 3yr Olds on Friday, 11

September.

Rotary - Give A Damn - Give a Can Appeal Pope Francis tweeted ‘May the Holy Spirit make us grow constantly in knowledge of God so that we might spread His love and His truth in the world.’ Each day we aim to find the Making Jesus Real moments in each other and to celebrate the gifts of the Holy Spirit which enable us to live more like Jesus. It is great to see the children taking time to care for others in the playground as well as the classrooms. The Rotary Give a Damn - Give a Can initiative is now up and running at school and if you can spare a can for those less fortunate that would be wonderful – supporting those in need and giving dignity to others is a wonderful way to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Father’s /Special Person Day I extend my best wishes to all our Dads/Special Persons in our school community for a great Father’s/Special Person day this Sunday, 6 September. Annette Quirk Principal Wellbeing for the Significant Men in our Lives There are many different types of Dads. Father figures come in all shapes and sizes, and being a parent can sometimes lie with a less-traditional role-model. So, let’s celebrate all the different dads out there who help shape who our children are: Dad - This one is pretty standard, the one we think of when we think of Father’s Day. Boyfriend or Stepdad - Whether biological dad is around or not, a boyfriend or stepdad can play a very important part in kids lives. Grandpa - Sometimes a grandparent ends up being a primary caregiver. Uncle - An uncle can play a leading part in their niece or nephew’s lives, whether they’re an uncle by blood or marriage, or just based on their friendship and relationship to the family. Mum - Sometimes there’s no father figure in the family. Shout out to the mums that also step into dad’s shoes sometimes. Mate - Just like an uncle, sometimes a friend of the family or a mate can step in to play dad whether that’s helping sometimes to pick the kids up from soccer or having those man-to-man type of chats with a young man figuring out the important things in life. Boss - This one can be particularly relevant to a young man embarking on an apprenticeship or someone that spends a lot of time at work, but there are plenty of ways that a boss or manager can take on father-figure actions through the simple act of mentorship and looking out for someone. Our School Priest - Fr Noe - Just like Jesus, Fr Noe teaches our children at school that God our Father loves us all.

General parenting at times and Father’s Day may bring a slew of emotions to the surface. If you’re worried about not seeing your kids on Father’s Day, and your Dad is still alive, maybe shift your focus to make sure your Dad knows you love him and try to spend some time showing him that. MensLine Australia has professional counsellors available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing confidential and anonymous information and support for all father and parenting issues. All collected food will be passed on to the In Town Lunch Centre, Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul Society for distribution to needy families. We’re sure you are all well aware that the number of families needing help increases each year! Our school has once again been invited to participate. It is a great opportunity for children to be personally involved in a community service program simply by bringing gifts of food - cans, packets of pasta, rice, soup or other non-perishable food items and placing them in the school’s main collection box. The school appeal will run over the next month. St Joseph’s School Business Directory Please Click here to view our school business directory. Melanie Stapleton Assistant Principal Exploring Numeracy with your child Kids who are keen on sport can use their interest to engage in maths. Some questions to ask them when watching or playing sport are:

How does your favourite sport keep score? What maths is involved? Are there other ways to record the score?

How do you use maths to find the total?

Who is at the top of the ladder and how do you calculate that?

How long do games last and how is the time divided?

What are the shapes and sizes of the playing fields? Can they estimate the perimeter?

MJR: The Spirit of Jesus Many of us are involved in sport after school and on the weekend. In Australia these sports are often run by generous volunteers. These people sacrifice their time and energy, even when others forget to thank them and may even abuse them. Then there are those who serve the community in organisations like St John’s Ambulance, St Vinnies, Lions Club and the Salvation Army. When you look at these people you can see generosity, sacrifice and patience. When we open the eyes of our faith we see these qualities that people practise every day. But sometimes we miss the obvious – the way our families and friends help us. We can ask ourselves, “How do I rate myself as a grateful friend or family member?” When Jesus says he is always with us, it means he is in the here and now – in us. Where did you see the Spirit of Jesus in your life today? Jane Olsen Assistant Principal
