I recently attended a conference for chaplains where I had the opportunity to listen to some fantastic key speakers, one of which was Dr Paul Whetham, a Clinical Psychologist based in Seacliff. His main message was the importance of looking after yourself. He based his message on Mark 12:30-31 ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these. We know well that we are to love our neighbour; we have heard it many times. The part we often forget is that we are commanded to love as we love ourselves. This means taking care of ourselves. You can’t love others if you don’t love yourself. You can’t take care of others and do it well, if you don’t first take care of yourself. Dr Whetham explained that when we are facing a problem and don’t deal with it, we often function out of that problem and relate to others through that filter, which can be quite dangerous and damaging for those we come into contact with, especially those closet to us. Ever experienced a great deal of stress and then spoken harshly to a family member? I know I have, well at least once or twice… The message is this: take notice of how you are travelling. How are your relationships going? How is your spiritual life? How are you emotionally? Anything out of balance can be a sign that you may have a problem that needs dealing with. When going through tough times we can seek God and surrender to His will and His way of doing life. We can seek trusted people to confide in and that will walk with us to get us to a better place. Remember, when you’re in a fix, Philippians 4:6: “Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have.” God bless you and have a great week. I recently attended a conference for chaplains where I had the opportunity

to listen to some fantastic key speakers, one of which was Dr Paul

Whetham, a Clinical Psychologist based in Seacliff. His main message was

the importance of looking after yourself. He based his message on Mark

12:30-31 ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul

and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love

your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than

these.

We know well that we are to love our

neighbour; we have heard it many times.

The part we often forget is that we are

commanded to love as we love ourselves.

This means taking care of ourselves. You

can’t love others if you don’t love yourself.

You can’t take care of others and do it well,

if you don’t first take care of yourself. Dr

Whetham explained that when we are facing

a problem and don’t deal with it, we often

function out of that problem and relate to

others through that filter, which can be quite

dangerous and damaging for those we come

into contact with, especially those closet to

us. Ever experienced a great deal of stress

and then spoken harshly to a family

member? I know I have, well at least once

or twice…

The message is this: take notice of how you are travelling. How are your

relationships going? How is your spiritual life? How are you emotionally?

Anything out of balance can be a sign that you may have a problem that

needs dealing with. When going through tough times we can seek God and

surrender to His will and His way of doing life. We can seek trusted people

to confide in and that will walk with us to get us to a better place.

Remember, when you’re in a fix, Philippians 4:6: “Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you

need, always giving thanks for what you have.”

God bless you and have a great week.

From the Principal By Brad Williams

August 5th 2019

Thursday night will see the culmination of two terms of hard work as our choir students join other children from the cluster to perform at the Chaffey Theatre. We congratulate each of the students for their commitment and wish them every success on the evening. Thanks to Mrs Wormald for her work and coordination of this event. Book Week Parade Book Week begins on the 19th August with the theme of “Reading is My Secret Power”. Our Book Week Parade and Celebration will take place on Wednesday 21st August at 9:00am. This will see all classes and the ELC parade around the quadrangle area. Students are encouraged to come dressed as a character from a book (don’t stress if the character doesn’t match the theme!) Parent Education/Workshops I often say to our families that education is a partnership between home and school. For students to achieve to their potential, the school and home need to work together. In staying true to this, we have orchestrated a number of workshops to provide information, support and education to our families. These are as follows: Monday 19th August at 6:30pm (Rm 8) – Want to know more about Reception at LLS? Thursday 29th August at 3:30pm (Rm 10) – Basic Number Skills Workshop (Years 3-7) Monday 2nd September at 5:15pm (Rm 10) – On-Line Safety Workshop with Michael Bradbury For further information about any of these sessions, please call the office.

Take care, Brad

Dear Families,

ELC Director News Recently, our ELC Director, Ms Melissa Pascoe advised me that she won’t be seeking to renew her contract beyond this year. Melissa will be returning to the Barossa Valley to be with her family and will also be heading overseas next year to broaden her life experience. There will be opportunities towards the end of the year to formally acknowledge Melissa’s contribution to the ELC and LLS community. The search for a new director will commence immediately, giving us every opportunity to find someone who will continue to work towards the vision we have for the centre. New Student We welcome Reece (Year 6) and his family to LLS. We wish Reece every blessing as he continues his learning journey with us. Thank you We extend our thanks to Paul Kaesler for donating fertiliser for our school oval. We also extend our thanks to Max Wishart for donating the blue metal for the car park area. We are very blessed to have local businesses and friends of the school who support us in so many ways. School Photos These are scheduled for Tuesday 27th August. Further information will be forthcoming in the near future. Excursions We wish our best to the Year 1 (Monarto Zoo), Year 3/4 (Lake Cullulleraine) and Year 5/6 (Scotts Creek) for their school camps/excursions. We thank the teaching staff who have prepared these experiences for the children and thank those parents who are attending camp. Choir

Parenting Help Recently I began listening to some podcasts on parenting by Dr Justin Coulson. For those of you who haven’t heard of Justin, he has a PhD in psychology and has written many articles, as well as several books, on parenting. He is a highly sought after speaker who has given hope to many parents through the provision of much needed advice to help them navigate their way through the various parenting stages. As a parent of six girls he should know what he is talking about! I highly recommend listening to Justin or reading some of his many articles which can be found on his website www.happyfamilies.com.au. If you would like to have a chat with me please phone the school and leave a message and I will get back to you, or you can send an email to [email protected]. Happy parenting! Amy Harvey Chaplain

A note for new parents

Please write an ’R’ next to your child/ren’s recess order

and they collect their items from the canteen. Ice creams that are ordered on a lunch bag (either recess or lunch) need to be collected from the canteen. If they want their

items at lunch time they are to bring their lunch bag with them so that I know what particular ice block has been

paid for (I only keep a record of recess orders and not ice

blocks that are ordered for lunch). Any questions please

contact me at school.

If your child has a particular food intolerance or allergy and is not catered for on the canteen menu, please contact me at school, on a Wednesday or Friday, were we can

discuss other options and ideas.

If any parents/grandparents/carers would like to help in the canteen during the year, on a Friday, please let me

know.

Thank you -

Trudy Battams, Canteen Manager
