School oval redevelopment – another very exciting project that has been occurring in the background is the redevelopment of our school oval. The intention is to replace the oval with synthetic turf which will enable the children to use this facility all year round. The project is about to go out to tender and our hope is that works will commence later this term and be completed by the end of Term One next year. Depicted below is an initial design which I encourage all families to provide me with feedback. Please do so in person or via email at [email protected] I look forward to hearing from you.

School Rebranding Update Last Thursday we held our second School Rebranding Committee meeting as we had the joyous although enormous task of analysing the vast amount of suggestions. In the end, the committee has recommended 6 logos and 5 mottos which are currently with Samitha (one of our parents who is also a graphic artist). These will be previewed by the committee early next term before the school community will be asked to cast their vote. A sincere thank you to all of the families who completed the “home learning task” as the suggestions can only be described as deep, thought provoking and reflective of our forward thinking and internationally minded school. I look forward to sharing the logos and mottos with the school community in Term 4.

Outdoor Education Update As mentioned in the previous newsletter, this term we continued the implementation of the various outdoor education programs such as the Late Nights at School, Year 3 Sleepover and the Year 6 Camp.

The Prep to Year 2 “Late Nights at School” – have all been an enormous success as the children were provided with the opportunity to further develop their independence skills. They thoroughly enjoyed staying at school a little later, playing with their peers, having dinner, changing into their pyjamas and then watching a movie before going home at approx. 7:30 pm.

The Year 3 “Sleepover” – was also an enormous success as the children had a wonderful time as they prepared for their first camping experience in Year 4. They played a variety of camp games, assisted preparing and cleaning up after each meal, organised their belongings etc, whilst also developing their resilience, independence and social emotional skills.

Year 6 Camp – was held at the picturesque Camp Adanac at Yarra Junction (Yarra Valley) from Monday 27th to Friday 31st August. The children participated in a variety of outdoor education learning tasks and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Outdoor Education Update (Cont’d) Naturally these learning experiences are not possible without the commitment of the staff. A sincere thank you to the fabulous staff at our school for planning and implementing high calibre experiences which the children will not only remember for many years to come but are also pivotal to their overall development. Well done, thank you and congratulations everyone.

Victorian State School Spectacular The 2018 Victorian State School Spectacular was held last Saturday and as usual, it really was an amazing and truly brilliant spectacular! This year’s theme was “With the Beat” which was quite apt as it is incredible what children are able to achieve when they are provided with the opportunity. Congratulations and well done to the following children for their stellar efforts: Mass Dance:

Year 5: Hilary, Chanu, Sia S and Alamu

Year 6: Chloe, Amy, Jasmine, Amanda, Geena, Anuk, Nethaya and Karina Mass Choir:

Year 3 Peyton, Mia, Nishtha and Jahzarah

Year 4: Shanza, Sruthika, Vyshi, Kheenav, Janessa, Mavishka, Savreen, Tvisha, Raya, Diya, Yaneesha, Cheng, Rithila, Aeryn, Shreya and Sithuli

As with all school events, our school’s participation in the Victorian State School Spectacular would have not been possible if it were not for the commitment and enthusiasm of our wonderful staff. A sincere thank you and well done to Ms. Wood and Ms. Park for overseeing the Mass Choir and the Mass Dances (respectively), and for their wonderful leadership and coordination leading up to, and throughout the Spectacular. Also a sincere thank you to Ms Rennie, Mrs. Platt and Mrs. Tomecek for their assistance prior and during the main performances. Congratulations and well done everyone, I hope you are as proud of yourself as I am of you!

Traditional Sri Lankan Dancing Performance Continuing the performance theme, on Sunday 10th September I attended the Vishver Rangayathanaya Academy of Traditional Sri Lankan Dancing Graduation ceremony which was an amazing spectacle as the children performing were simply outstanding and incredibly professional. It was fabulous to see so many of our current and past students perform in a variety of traditional dances, and to do so with an enormous smile on their faces was delightful. Congratulations to Rashika for of her hard work in preparing the children, the numerous parents who assisted with costuming and to the fabulous performers - the children, as you were amazing! If you are interested in your child joining this program please do not hesitate to contact Rahika on 0423 584 440.

2019 Enrolments I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2019 that we are taking enrolments now and that they are also closing rapidly as we only have a very small number of positions available. I strongly encourage you to ensure you return your child’s enrolment form to Jenny, Kylie, Janet or Julie in the main office as soon as possible. We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of their neighbours of the enrolment procedures and direct them to the office to collect an enrolment form or our school website – www.glenps.vic.edu.au School tours are available every Tuesday morning commencing at 9:30 and also upon request. Please call the school on 9802 9938 to book a tour.

Vacation Care Program Once again our school will be implementing our very own Vacation Care (Holiday Care) program during the forthcoming holidays. Included in this newsletter is an overview of the program and the associated costs. Please be aware that ALL FAMILIES are entitled to a 50% rebate (which is not means tested) plus a further rebate which is determined by your family’s 2017-2018 annual taxable income. SCHOOL REBRANDING

Our whole school is buzzing with ideas for our new logo and motto! You will remember the journey so far: Our current logo and motto were implemented when the original Glen Waverley Primary and Glen Waverley Heights Primary Schools merged in the early 1990s, and have stood the test of time well. However, one of our recommendations from our CIS Visiting Team was to review the meaning of our logo and motto, and assess if they are still the best fit for our ever-improving school. Last term we held a survey to ask what our community thought our logo and motto should portray. The information which came back was our success criteria of:-

Learning

Togetherness/Community

Diversity

Respect

School Values

Happiness

Growth Mindset

Success

With this in mind, our school community got creating! Over 400 designs for a logo were received, together with 223 mottos. The Brand Renewal Committee met on September 13th with the daunting task of shortlisting these designs. It was hard work, but we shortlisted six mottos, four original logo designs, and two more designs which are combinations of the shortlisted originals. These six logos will be professionally created over the school holidays, and early next term we will vote for our new logo. We look forward to presenting the designs to you next term, and can’t wait to see which logo and motto are selected!

The “Kids’ Corner” section of our school newsletter provides the opportunity

for the children to showcase their talents or communicate something special

The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter have been written by numerous children as they showcase their fabulous learning:

The Magic Hat by Senudi (Year 2) One morning Jack walked into in his dad’s office. His dad said, “I can say a spell that would do all of your home learning!” However he accidentally said the wrong spell and …… poof, Jack flew into his dad’s hat and ended up in the world of giants! Jack turned around and there was a big black bug behind him. He ran as fast as he could and then it started to rain and he had to find some shelter because the rain drops were huge! That night Jack built a house and ate coconuts. The next day there was something on his roof, he looked outside and saw two big parasites …………….. he ran as fast as he could before they saw him and then he saw a way out. He saw some blonde hair which he jumped on and slid all the way back to Earth. Phew, that was close thought Jack as he looked for his father, “Hmm, I wonder where he has gone, Jack thought to himself, “I bet he made another mistake with his spells ……… I wonder where he is?”
