Dear Parents/Carers, The students have been engaged in many creative learning experiences over the past few weeks. The students have been learning about the craft of writing and the things that make a piece of writing interesting to the reader. In mathematics a range of concepts are being investigated and taught in order to help consolidate students’ understanding of number. COMMUNICATION REGARDING CONCERNS: If you have a concern regarding your child, please ensure that you speak to your child’s classroom teacher as a first port of call. If they are not able to resolve your concern, the classroom teacher will then speak to another relevant member of staff to assist them. HOMEWORK: Homework is one way of supporting student learning and connecting families with the learning of their children. At Newbury Primary School we follow the Department of Education homework guidelines which state that: Homework in Prep-Year 4:

Will mainly consist of daily reading to, with and by parents/carers or older siblings.

Enables the extension of class work by practising skills or gathering of extra information or materials. Homework in Years 5 and 6:

Should include daily independent reading.

May extend class work, projects and assignments, essays and research. BRICK PAVERS: We would like to apologise to the families who have been purchased a paver to commemorate their child’s or family name and be placed within the grounds. Unfortunately we have had great difficulty trying to secure a contractor to do the scope of works required. We have finally found one and the works will be completed over the Term 1 break. We thank you for your patience and understanding. INTERNET SAFETY: Students use a range of devices for both learning and social purposes. We encourage parents to co-view, co-play, ask questions about the games and apps they are using, and let them know you are there to support them if they are upset or uncomfortable about anything they see online. Five top tips to help limit your child’s exposure to harmful content online: • Engage in your child’s online activities – ask what apps, sites and games they’re using and make sure they’re age-appropriate • Use parental controls on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to • Let them know not everything they see online is real or true. • Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps.

Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online, and to contact Kids Helpline if they need further support. TIPS FOR HELPING YOUR CHILD AT HOME: Oral language development is an important element of literacy. Story-telling is a great way to extend your child’s oral language and listening skills, as well as expanding their imagination. Either you can tell the story, or encourage your child to tell the story. Story-telling might be about: A favourite character from a book or television program Another family member Your child’s favourite toy A setting from another story PREVENTING ILLNESS: To help avoid becoming ill, please consider the following:

Wash hands regularly

Cover mouth when coughing and sneezing

Use disposable tissues

Stay home when unwell VOMITING: Please note if your child has vomited, they cannot return to school for 24 hours from their last vomit as they may be

UNWANTED UNIFORM: If you have any unwanted uniform pieces, Newbury are happy to take your donations .Please donate to the office. Thankyou for supporting our Newbury community.

Page 3: Important Dates...2020/03/06  · that not only does arriving to school late impact on your child’s learning time, it also distracts the class when students enter during a lesson

DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP: When dropping off and picking up students, please practice road safety at all times. It has been reported that a number of cars are double parking, parking on the roundabout or on the curb which poses a huge risk for students. Parking inspectors often visit schools and will issue parking infringements to anyone found posing a danger or parking illegally. We have also noticed a large number of parents crossing in the middle of the road and not using the provided school crossings. Please demonstrate road safety by using our school crossings. BIKES AND SCOOTERS: At Newbury Primary School, we promote health and fitness and it is terrific to see many students riding their bikes or scooters to school. Please make sure your child is wearing a helmet and that once they enter the school grounds, they walk their bike or scooter in. The bike sheds are located at the end of the building, near Classrooms 16 and 25. ENTERING AND EXITING THE SCHOOL/ GARDENS: Please note that all gates around the school are open for entry and exit. We are trying very hard to beautify our gardens. Please respect our grounds and do not walk through the gardens. NAMING OF FUTURE SCHOOL: Want your say on the name of the new primary school in Mickleham? The Victorian School Building Authority is seeking community input into developing the name of the new primary school currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2021. Merrifield West Primary School (only an interim name) will open its doors in 2021 as part of the Government’s school building program that will see 100 new public schools. You can forward any name suggestions to the Department of Education and Training’s North Western Victoria Regional Office via email at [email protected] by Friday March 27 or contact the office on 1300 338 691 to discuss. A proposed name will be selected from a shortlist of potential names for formal consultation with all surrounding schools and services before a recommendation is made to the Minister for Education. School names can recognise and reflect culture, heritage and landscape and will be guided by the statutory requirements outlined in the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria. If you would like further information about this new school and other school building projects you can visit the Victorian School Building Authority webpage at www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL: Please note that supervision for students before school commences at 8:45am and after school until 3:25pm. Staff are not on duty beyond these times. Please do not drop off your child before this time or leave them waiting after school beyond this time as they will not be supervised. ABSENCES: There have been a significant number of student absences which is concerning. Teachers plan sequential lessons which can be disrupted by non-attendance. Please ensure your child is at school on every day possible. If your child is absent, please call the school number on 8691 6900 and leave a message to explain their absences or enter it on Sentral. All absences must be accounted for. EARLY DEPARTURES: Many students are being picked up early, often just before 3:00pm, this is unacceptable. Our dismissal time is 3:10pm which is a lot earlier than many schools in the area which enables parents/carers to miss a lot of the school traffic. Where possible, please make appointments outside of school times. LATE ARRIVALS: We have had quite a number of students arriving to school late and doing so on a regular basis. Please be aware that not only does arriving to school late impact on your child’s learning time, it also distracts the class when students enter during a lesson. Please ensure that your child is at school, in their class and ready to commence instruction at 9:00am. A reminder that students can enter their classrooms from 8:50am. ALL DAY GRAZING: At Newbury Primary School, we understand that students need food to fuel their brain and that they are hungry during the day. Therefore, we encourage students to bring along healthy snacks that they can munch on in class. Some ideas include: carrot sticks, cheese, rice crackers, fresh or dried fruit, yoghurt or vegetables. Please refrain from providing food that may affect any anaphylactic students.

Page 4: Important Dates...2020/03/06  · that not only does arriving to school late impact on your child’s learning time, it also distracts the class when students enter during a lesson

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: At Newbury Primary School we encourage healthy eating and the sharing of food is not allowed. When wanting to do something special at school for your child for their birthday, please be mindful of this as well as the needs of our anaphylactic students. Any lolly bags need to contain individually wrapped lollies, any cakes require the ingredients to be listed. STUDENT EMPOWERMENT LEADERS: Congratulations to our 2020 Student Empowerment Leaders. Developing leadership skills is an important part of the curriculum at Newbury Primary School and we aim to provide students with many opportunities to grow in self-confidence. Student Empowerment leaders work together to be the voice of the students within the school. They demonstrate the school values of respect, integrity, effort and community on a daily basis. Congratulations to our 2020 Student Empowerment leaders. We look forward to working closely with you to build your leadership capacity.

Our Newbury Prep students have had a fantastic start to their first year of school. We are excited to see them continue to grow

as part of our school community.

English Mathematics Quest

Students have learnt the first set

of sounds (s/a/t/p/i/n) throughout our Rocket to Reading program. Students

have enjoyed searching for words that start with each

of the letters.

Students have been learning about making

collections and recognising

numbers to 10.

In Quest, we have been learning

about community. We have spoken

about different

communities we belong to, includ-

ing our school community,

High Frequency Words & Take Home Texts

Prep students have been sent home a set of High Frequency Words, which are the words found most commonly in books. The word list will change once your child has mastered the previous set of words. Every Monday and Wednesday students will bring home a new take home text book to read. Students need to bring

their take home text back to school every day.

Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships

At Newbury Primary School we participate in a program called Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships. Respectful Relationships supports schools and early childhood settings to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours. It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence through eight different topics.

Topic 1: Emotional Literacy

Throughout Topic 1 students learn how to better understand and recognise their emotions. They learn how to deal with negative emotions and support their peers.

Week 6

On Monday’s we have Colouring Club. There has been an overwhelming response from students who say they love colouring

club. Students have used textas, crayons, pencils and lots of different types of colouring sheets to practice their fine motor skills.

Come and join in next time, but make sure you are there early so you get it!

Week 8

Arts and Crafts Clubs is on Friday’s. Here the students get to cut, paste, fold and colour to their hearts content. Students are

shown how to create something, for example a folded book marks or cards, but then students can also choose to create anything

they would like to.

Here at Newbury Primary School we take the safety of our students seriously. Please refer to the VicRoads

information below and discuss with your children the importance of road safety.

Crossing the road safely Pedestrians have to share the road with vehicles so it is important they take care when crossing the road. As a pedestrian, plan where you will walk and always choose the safest place to cross a road. Stop, Look, Listen, Think Follow the safe road crossing procedure – STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK.

STOP one step back from the kerb or shoulder of the road if there is no footpath.

LOOK in all directions for approaching traffic.

LISTEN in all directions for approaching traffic.

THINK about whether it is safe to cross the road – when the road is clear or all traffic has stopped.

When crossing, walk straight across the road. Keep LOOKING and LISTENING for traffic while crossing. This information is particularly relevant to young people learning to cross roads. But it also provides a useful reminder to everyone particularly to those who may be distracted when crossing the road. Crossings Even at crossings you still need to remain alert and check whether vehicles are stopping for you. Always make sure traffic has actually stopped before stepping onto the road. Remember children’s crossings are legally active only when the flags are displayed. If a school crossing supervisor is on duty, cross only when he or she indicates that it is safe. Crossing the road at other places Walk straight across the road – don’t jay-walk.

Keep checking in both directions to make sure the way is clear.

Try not to cross the road from between parked cars or near trees and bushes as drivers may not see you.

Avoid crossing near a bend or crest in the road. Give yourself a good chance to see vehicles coming from both directions.

Avoid crossing on roundabouts, particularly multi-lane roundabouts as they are very busy and complex and cars are not required to give way to you, unless there is a pedestrian crossing. Find somewhere further away from the roundabout to safely cross the road.
