Welcome to the first Cairns Regional

Council quarterly newsletter for DIVISION 1 – which takes in Mirriwinni, Bramston Beach, Babinda, Aloomba, Gordonvale, parts of Edmonton and East Trinity. This newsletter is aimed at keeping you up to date with works, services and activities in your area. The next newsletter will be distributed in early December.

n Church Street and School Street footpath renewal in Babinda

n Babinda Boulders Improvement works commenced – includes construction of an all-abilities access ramp into the main swimming hole, replacements of footbridges, viewing platform and balustrading at lookouts

n Developed new Economic Development Plans for Babinda and Gordonvale

n Redevelopment of Petersen Park, Edmonton (pictured right), is nearing completion. Two new rectangular playing fields will be seeded this month and will be ready for use next year. Also new clubhouse, amenities, lighting and carparking.

n Free Community Wi-Fi made available in Norman Park, Gordonvale

n Swale drain improvements in Hanson St, Goldsborough

n Footpaths constructed in Cairns Rd, Moller St, Muir St, and Mill St, Gordonvale

n Bus stop improvements completed in Sheppards St (near Gordonvale High) and new bus stop established in Ridolfi St, Gordonvale

n Upgrade to Josephine Creek Bridge, on Bartle Frere Road (right), continued with placement of deck units, grouting and stressing complete. Kerbs to the bridge deck have commenced. Project estimated to be 85% complete.

n Kerb and channel renewal in Gordon St (George St to Norman St) Gordonvale

n Three Storytime sessions held at Babinda and Gordonvale Libraries

n Mayor’s Charity Golf Day held at Gordonvale Golf Club, raising $37,000 for Mission Australia’s programs in the southern corridor

n Fitness equipment installed in Norman Park, Gordonvale

n Free movie night (Trolls) held at Robert Rossi Park, Aloomba (16 Sept)

n Replacement of water pipes at Hargreaves Rd, Edmonton

n Installed 3-hour parking signs at Gordonvale Library

n Installed Green Army signs for Healthy River & Reef Project, Babinda area

n Pilot water treatment plant at Gordonvale Wastewater Treatment Plant constructed

Rugby League World Cup coming soon!

The world comes to Cairns this October for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup! Barlow Park will host three matches over two days – a double header on October 29 with Ireland v Italy, followed by Scotland v Tonga. The Scots return on November 11 to tackle Samoa.Each weekend for the duration of the event there will be a free “live site” on the Cairns Esplanade with cultural showcases from the countries calling Cairns home during the tournament. Scottish pipe bands, Irish dancers, feasts from the Pacific and plenty of pasta will fill the live site. Tickets are available from www.rlwc2017.com

TIME TO SUPPORT APPEALThe Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal supports families who are doing it tough by providing a Christmas hamper. Donations to the Appeal can be made via Council’s website; at one of Council’s customer service offices with cash, credit card, cheque or money order; or by dropping some coins in one of the donation tins located at various local businesses.
