Import Cars vs. Domestic Cars, Which One To
Choose?
Often you hear people protesting the United States consumers buying import products. People feel that you
should "buy American" to boost the American economy and keep our money circulating inside the nation. This
really comes to a head hen you look at the argument o!er hether people should buy import cars or domestic
cars. Those ho argue for domestic cars such as ord or #eneral $otor ill tell you that they are helpingAmericans because the money they spend ill e!entually go to American orkers building cars in factories
instead of going o!erseas. They ill say that they are helping Americans by buying American and that ill
help the economy.
%ell it doesnt &uite ork that ay.
'ets agree on some things and try to get some things straight. (ts generally agreed upon that )apanese and
#erman cars tend to be better than American cars in &uality. That is a ord may be cheaper than a Toyota but
in the long run the Toyota is much more reliable and ont ha!e engine problems *generally+ and usually ont
need to be taken to the repair shop to be fi,ed until its !ery old. A ord on the other hand might break don
and cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars in repairs after -ust a year or to. So hy should e choosethe ord o!er the Toyota %hy do people choose American cars o!er foreign cars
$uch of the reason for that is because foreign cars especially cheaper )apanese cars tend to be lighter *though
much more fuel/efficient+ than American cars and Americans like to feel more secure in their bulkier hea!ier
American !ehicles. Although lu,ury #erman and )apanese cars tend to be hea!ier they still arent as hea!y
as say the 0ummer *nor do they use up nearly as much gas hich ould sa!e a lot of money in the modern
day+.
And theres still yet another reason hy you shouldnt necessarily "buy American" brand cars all the time. (n
this day and age import brands such as 1issan Toyota 0onda $itsubishi $ercedes/2en3 and 2$%
usually build most or all of their !ehicles in America. This is easier for them because they ill send in parts
from their home countries and then construct the !ehicle in America so that they dont ha!e to orry about
flying the completed cars across the seas to the United States. On the other hand if you are in fact "buying
American" you might find that you arent buying American at all. %hy is that %ell American car companies
such as ord and #eneral $otors outsource their ork all o!er the globe to Asia and 4urope and $e,ico and
other countries. They usually ha!e the indi!idual parts made in foreign countries and the import them to
construct the cars in America.
5o you see a parallel (n the end it seems that both American and foreign car companies ill build their parts
outside of America and constructing them inside. So hen you consider buying American think again about
ho youre helping and make the choice based on the cars &uality/not on hich country manufactures it.
