Why worry about OpenURL?

Make requesting items more convenient for patrons

Requests contain more complete information in the correct fields

Less staff time required to process requests

What is OpenURL?

Makes it possible to request a book or an article simply by clicking on a URL

Useful for linking citation databases directly to resources or to ILLiad so that users don’t need to key in data

How do you install OpenURL?

You really need to read the directions – this is not intuitive (http://www.atlas-sys.com/)

You will need to manually install a java virtual machine, create some directories, and set permissions for your web server. If you follow the instructions, you’ll be fine.

Customizing OpenURL

Very easy to do Your imagination is the limit You can modify the appearance of the page

by header.jsp and footer.jsp that appear in the OpenURL directory

Don’t be afraid to direct OpenURL requests to a resolver before sending them to ILLiad

Things you need to know

Can significantly increase number of requests generated higher ILL expenses

Some providers do not construct good OpenURLs. This can lead to missing or erroneous data in requests.

OCLC number not transmitted Material type is not transmitted – videos look like
